A deadly bombing takes Navajo Tribal cops Bernadette Manuelito, Jim Chee, and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, back into the past to find a vengeful killer in this riveting Southwestern mystery from the bestselling author of Spider Woman’s Daughter and Rock with Wings.
When a car bomb kills a young man in the Shiprock High School parking lot, Officer Bernadette Manuelito discovers that the intended victim was a mediator for a multi-million-dollar development planned at the Grand Canyon.
But what seems like an act of ecoterrorism turns out to be something far more nefarious and complex. Piecing together the clues, Bernadette and her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, uncover a scheme to disrupt the negotiations and inflame tensions between the Hopi and Dine tribes.
Retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn has seen just about everything in his long career. As the tribal police’s investigation unfolds, he begins to suspect that the bombing may be linked to a cold case he handled years ago. As he, Bernadette, and Chee carefully pull away the layers behind the crime, they make a disturbing discovery: a meticulous and very patient killer with a long-simmering plan of revenge.
Writing with a clarity and grace that is all her own, Anne Hillerman depicts the beauty and mystery of Navajo Country and the rituals, myths, and customs of its people in a mystery that builds on and complements the beloved, bestselling mysteries of her acclaimed father, Tony Hillerman.

This was my first book in the Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito series began by her father. It was good enough that I bought a book from her father Tony and read that quickly. I like it so much I will probably read the whole series.
Absorbing and down to earth. Great realistic books.
I have found that Anne Hillerman has taken the characters her father had created and made them her own. Reading this book, I couldn’t tell the difference between her writing and her father Tony Hillerman. When you are drawn into a series with such great characters as there are in the books of Tony Hillerman, you are sadden when the author dies and you loose you connection with the people he wrote about. With the three books written by Anne Hellerman I have been reunited with old friends I thought I had lost. Thanks for such a great read, I’m waiting for the next book.
This latest book by Anne Hillerman is her at her finest. She’s definitely taking over from where her father left off. Having lived 8 years on the Navajo Reservation , I find Hillerman captures the scenery, special places, the culture and the Navajo people to perfection.
The Navajo Reservation is like no other place on earth and Hillerman’s writing makes me yearn to return to this unique place and the Dine people.
So happy to see Anne keep Leaphorn and Chee going. You cannot go wrong with a Hillerman mystery.
I’m a long time Hillerman fan – so I’m happy to see the daughter carry on the fathers tradition. New characters along with the old timers.
Good to read about Chee again! Great continuation of the Hillerman literary legacy.
Very interesting
just plods along. takes forever to get anywhere
She writes as well as her father and gives continued life to his characters.
She has done a great job keeping her father’s characters alive for the fans.
Anne Hillerman has taken over her father’s characters with skill. This is a great addition to the stories of Leaphorn and Chee
Carries the torch of her father’s writing forward
The student daughter is learning.
So much like her father in her writing – a good read – will read her others now.
Not quite up to Tony Hillerman’s writing yet, but demonstrates wide knowledge of Navajo land and people, and interesting contemporary plot.
Anne Hillerman has inherited her dad’s mantle of storytelling in the Four Corners area – she knows the world he built, chose the characters to flesh out further & the story continues…..
The best of Ann Hilerman’s books so far. Wonderful descriptions of various places. The characters are coming more and more to life.
As a fan of Tony Hillerman, I thought I would try one by Anne Hillerman. It’s the same characters I am familiar with should be a good read. It really wasn’t.
Mostly I found the story annoying. I don’t remember Chee being this simple and his wife is worse than simple. Won’t be reading any more of these.
I love all the Hillerman books especially those with Jim Chee and wife Bernadette. These are all well thought out mysteries usually with a surprise ending. You can go wrong reading any of these mysteries by either Tony Hillerman or his daughter.
