A deadly bombing takes Navajo Tribal cops Bernadette Manuelito, Jim Chee, and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, back into the past to find a vengeful killer in this riveting Southwestern mystery from the bestselling author of Spider Woman’s Daughter and Rock with Wings.
When a car bomb kills a young man in the Shiprock High School parking lot, Officer Bernadette Manuelito discovers that the intended victim was a mediator for a multi-million-dollar development planned at the Grand Canyon.
But what seems like an act of ecoterrorism turns out to be something far more nefarious and complex. Piecing together the clues, Bernadette and her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, uncover a scheme to disrupt the negotiations and inflame tensions between the Hopi and Dine tribes.
Retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn has seen just about everything in his long career. As the tribal police’s investigation unfolds, he begins to suspect that the bombing may be linked to a cold case he handled years ago. As he, Bernadette, and Chee carefully pull away the layers behind the crime, they make a disturbing discovery: a meticulous and very patient killer with a long-simmering plan of revenge.
Writing with a clarity and grace that is all her own, Anne Hillerman depicts the beauty and mystery of Navajo Country and the rituals, myths, and customs of its people in a mystery that builds on and complements the beloved, bestselling mysteries of her acclaimed father, Tony Hillerman.

If you are a fan of the Hillerman Navajo mysteries then this will certainly not disappoint. The story contains good drama, a smattering of the Navajo culture, with some realistic characters thrown in… Anne Hillerman draws the reader along in a steady pace that keeps you turning the page right to the final page. A really nice read!
Written after the characters drawn and beloved by her dad Tony Hillerman, Anne uses the one woman detective to focus on. A satisfying mystery and continuation of a lovely series.
If you’re a fan of the Southwest with many Native American cultures and their artifacts going back eons then mysteries in which the primary characters are Native Americans with events of the story intertwined with their cultures and customs you will like this book in the tradition of Tony Hillerman s stories. The
characters will be familiar. Having read all of Tony Hillerman s books I am happy
to have more Leaphorn and Chee tales!
I enjoy the author, I find the Navajo heritage interesting.
Anne Hillerman is doing a great job of continuing the series started by her father, Tony. As in the earlier books of the series, Song of the Lion provides the perfect mix of education about the Indians of the southwest, their environment, and the issues they face with a dramatic mystery story.
I hope we’ll see lots more novels about Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito!
One of my favorite series taken over by Tony Hillerman’s daughter. I could read about the Navajo Nation any day. Lots to learn about the reservation.
Nothing like her dad’s novels. When I got to a 5 page description of a (take-out) pizza dinner, I stopped reading…
Anne is even a better writer than her Dad Tony.
Not as good as her father (I have read every one of his books), but not bad. Actually, have read most of her books as well. Love the emphasis on the background an history of the area.
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT INDIAN CULTURE, THE EASY HISTORY WAY, THEN THIS AUTHOR MAKES LEARNING MUCH MORE INTERESTING WHEN IT IS PACKED INTO A MODERN DAY MYSTERY. LOVE THE HILLERMAN BOOKS!
How wonderful that Anne Hillerman has continued the stories of Leeaphorn, Chee and Manuelito. And one of the best parts is that she has continued her father’s practice of making the landscape of the Southwest one of the main characters of every book. I really enjoy these books for the familiar settings, characters and plots.
I really enjoy all the Hillerman books
The author continues in the great tradition of her father with the same characters and locale. Both her books and her father’s are fantastic.
I loved Tony Hillerman’s Jim Chee books but I also enjoy Anne Hillerman’s continuation of that series. She is his daughter. The books have a greater emphasis on Jim Chee’s wife and fellow officer, Bernadette Manuelito. I’ve read all of the books in the series by both authors. I’m happy that the books have been continued.
Hillerman has a way of taking me back to the Navajo reservation. I can see different parts of that beautiful land as I read.
Anne Hillerman has added her talented voice to a series that her father, Tony Hillerman, started. Like her father, Anne demonstrates knowledge of and feelings for the Navajo people and their customs and ceremonies. You’ve got to read this book and this series.
Anne Hillerman picked up where her father left off and seemlessly has kept the New Mexico landscaping sizzling with wonderful writing
I love the Hillerman books.
Just what you’d expect of Tony’s daughter–a more feminine perspective with the same wonderful Navajo characters, whom we all love.
Well I put together. Her father would be proud.
