Song of Souls is a Pied Piper retelling with a romantic twist. The characters are well developed and the story is interesting. This was my first Pied Piper retelling and I loved the storyline with Autumn running from the Cult of the Hundred. This is a great addition to the Once Upon a Fairy Tale Night series.
My first by this author. This is an incredible take on the pied piper story. A unique twist to the land of fairytales and make believe. The piper follows the song where it goes and takes those it tells him to to another place the song has no bias it takes the old and the young, men and women and once even a 100 children in one night. The piper doesnt enjoy his work he is forced to do, he is lonely in a world where no one can see or hear him apart from the sound of his pipe to his next victim. That is until he meets Autumn, a woman whose injured falling off her old bike whilst on the run from the church of the hundred, she can hear and see him though not his true form, she has no fear of him as his victims do in their last moments. He is drawn to her and takes her back to one of his houses high up in the mountains, where not only his mind but body craves her and he will do and say anything to keep her there. Autumn having woke up in a strange mans house, who thinks he has horns, she wants to leave and get back on her way, far far away. But is drawn to staying whilst she tries to figure out who really is. The pipers told her lies at first and then half truths but she knows he still hiding something. As she tells the secrets of the church to the piper he knows he has to do something to stop history repeating itself, but with Autumn by his side will fate have a different path for them to take and will the mystery of the pipers past be discovered. A tragically beautiful story that captivates and grips you to every page.

The piper’s music usually only calls souls of the living over to meet their end but that soon will change.
It is impossible to resist the call of the piper and to ignore his instructions.
Autumn is constantly trying to fight from day to day to stay alive in this indoctrinated world… She runs from the cult she shouldn’t have come across and can’t waste a moment in her escape.
When she meets a mysterious and odd stranger only she can see, she is pulled by his very words.
His music is only meant for those who will never see another day but he can’t let her go… How will he keep her for himself?
This was an original and unique take on the pied piper which instantly whetted my appetite for this literary excellence.
The storyline was truly the work of a fairytale creature I’m sure as it was perfection in its delivery.
I’ve never read anything that had such a strong and solid direction with a magnificent ending and promise of more.
I congratulate the author on a job done so fantastically well that it should be a bestseller.

A engaging read that is somewhat based on the Piped Piper story. This short paranormal/fairytale read is about Autumn who is running away from a cult that is hunting her and Piper (Reaper-like) who has been roaming the Earth for 100 yrs is compel to follow the “Song” to whom it leads only to finally be seen and heard by Autumn who he found on a stormy day. What happens between them in this romantic read that had interesting characters and a story was a page turner that I volunteer to read and review via Booksprout.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I rather different telling of the Pied Piper but no less enchanting. It reminded me bit of the tale of Ole Lukøje. You really feel for Tom as you can tell that he is anguished about the song and what happens. He has been alone a long time and the bottom drops out of his world a bit when someone finally sees him! Autumn feels safe around him but her brain tells her that she shouldn’t so as a result she feels very conflicted. It is a bittersweet tale and I loved it.
loved it !!! love this re-telling with a fantastic twist… love Autumn and the Piper… this is their story… she’s on the run…she saw something she wasn’t supposed to… he’s been alone for a hundred years…he finds her in a ditch near death…he takes her… a fast paced action packed adventure with betrayal, secrets and more… just loved it !!!

Very different retelling of a classic fairytale. Loved the creativity and how it all gets explained in the end. The writing style makes it easy to connect with the characters.
Tom (the piper) has no idea how he came to be or what his purpose is to the souls he takes. He finds Autumn on the side of the road after an accident. When she wakes up she is the only one to be able to see him and interact with him. They work together to defeat a common enemy. It is a definite read!
A retelling of a classic the pied piper he is there to collect but never seen and is lonely and hates his job, but all changes when he is seen by Autumn. She is running and hurt but hears his song and they end up tangled by fate. It has mystery, intrigue and love.

This is a very interesting story of The Pied Piper. This is a love story with a twist. So you have Him aka Tom and Spring aka Autumn. These two meet in a weird circumstance. Tom has been alone for so long and hates what he does. Autumn has stumbled upon something and that lead her to meet Tom. There is mystery to this story and once you start reading you will not want to put it down. Both Tom and Autumn are perfect for each other. There is healing, love and emotions that just pour off the pages. It is a wonderful book to read.
Song of Souls: A Pied Piper Retelling Kindle Edition
by Skye MacKinnon (Author)
Thank you to the author and publisher for the complimentary eARC. This review is left voluntarily.
Set in Skye MacKinnon’s Catnip Assassin’s world and the Once Upon A Fairy Tale Night shared universe, Song Of Souls can be read as a stand-alone, if you are prepared to have a few things that make you go “hmm”
A little bit Pied Piper and a little bit Phantom of the Opera and a little Beauty and the Beast, the story is poignant and tender one end, and cruel and dangerous on the other. I wanted to know about the characters starting with page one.
While the ending didn’t carry the punch I would have like, the story is well-balanced. Balanced not only between passionate love scenes and heart-rending revelations about the Piper’s history and truth.
The villain wasn’t quite as well-fleshed out and bordered on a stereotype, but since we see so little of him, it is easy to let passionate
I truly loved the concept, however,I loved. While clearly the story of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, there is more of a Eric, The Phantom of the Opera feeling. Sorrow and joy filter through the music. The love scenes and aftermath are filled with this.
I loved this book and am going to plunge in to the Catnip Assassins series.

Delightfully dark and melancholy
Song of Souls strikes the right balance between fantasy and romance, between melancholic despair and hope. The romance between Tom and Autumn is the right balance between heat and partnership, and the ending with there daughter as so sweet. The storyline has a grittiness that fantasy story can get; the violence is poetic justice, with the perfect amount of build up. A great re-imagining of the tale of the Pied Piper.

Awesome take on the Pied Piper from Skye! She never disappoints with her books! We have Autumn running from a cult, and she comes upon the Pied Piper. No spoilers, but definitely recommend!
A great retelling of the Pied Piper. I wasn’t very knowledgeable with this tale but I love the twists and turns the author takes in this retelling. It’s dangerous and dark and even sweet and sexy. I couldn’t put it down.
A woman desperate to survive and the Piper bring about a new song. I voluntarily received this book for an honest review.
Such an amazing story. It is one that has a bit of a mystery that has to be solved throughout it. It is extremely well written and I loved the characters. Autumn is a strong leading lady that helps us to learn so much about the Piper. His character is strong and compassionate. The story itself is beautifully written and is definitely gripping to the point it draws you in and doesn’t let go. The descriptions are vivid throughout the story that you are easily able to picture what is what and what is happening. This story is a quicker read but is is so stunningly written that you do not miss out on anything. It is a must read!!!!!
The story line was good, the character work was terrific and the book had a fairly smooth flow to it. This was another great addition to this multi author series and was an enjoyable retelling of The Pied Piper.

I wasn’t sure how this book was going to turn out, but I wasn’t disappointed! I love Skye’s other works and I’m really glad that I gave this book a shot. I loved the idea of a Pied Piper retelling because I’ve never read one of them before and this one was romantic and luring.
Him, also known as Tom, is controlled by the Song and has been alone for a century. Autumn is on the run from a cult after learning too much. Their lives collide and it becomes a mess of emotions- love, betrayal, fear, and understanding.
I loved how this played out and especially the ending. Skye created wonderful characters and descriptions of the forces at play. It read like a fairytale and kept me hooked until the very end! I loved that she was able to tie this book into one of her series and I look forward to reading it soon.
