The Muse…
Clara Becker is a supremely gifted composer — a talent of little to use to a woman in 1830s Europe. Her compositions only have worth when they are published under her brother’s name, yet this deception barely enables them to scrape out a living in the poorest quarter of London.
Meets the Master…
Darien Reynard, the most celebrated musician in Europe, pursues success with a … musician in Europe, pursues success with a single-minded intensity. When he comes across Becker’s compositions, he knows that this music will secure his place in history. Darien tracks the composer down and, with some difficulty, convinces the man to tour with him. Mr. Becker agrees, but with the most unusual condition that he bring along his sister…

Very well written. The characters were well formed, like able and believable.
A woman who is so talented yet unable to claim the accolades due to the time that she is born in. A woman who will sacrifice for the good of her family. A woman who will love without condition or expectation.
A man who is talented and driven to be the best. A man who …
Great depth to the characters!
The descriptions of how a song comes to be are lovely. There’s a lot of sex in this book, so beware. The author’s perspective is that life’s passions inspire the music, and the composer and the maestro make the most beautiful music together, through instrument play and love making. I found the story line tedious at times, and I did not like the …
Absolutely Wonderful Story
An Absolutely Wonderful Story. This Story was well written. The Story flows with music & poems. The information after the Epilogue was Wonderful to read. To think how women were unable to be accepted for composing before the 1900’s.,
This was a very different premise for a romance & I enjoyed it tremendously. It took me a little while to like the male lead but the other characters were very down to earth & likable. I enjoyed the steamy sex scenes. They liven up a story. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I loved the richness of this novel and all the great music references. Wonderfully emotional.
Such a story! Woman composer (not sanctioned by society) writes for her brother, who wins the accolades! What happens when they tour with a suspicious violinist, who has his questions about the music?
It was a cute, fun read. You could sympathize with the characters.
Highly recommend
Book had promising premise but after the first few pages, it had no where to go except for the grand finale. Middle of book was nothing but page after page of “lovemaking”, at least 7 nights worth with many pages filled with each night. I heroine of the story was vapid and one dimensional. I will not be reading more from this author.
Was a kind of boring book but I finally finished.
Wonderful characters loosely based on real people from history.
It was fast reading because I could skip so many pages of sex.
I enjoyed the historical references to women who wrote music during the time period. However, I did skip overquite a few parts of the book. There was too much sexual dialog for my tastes but I did want to see how the story ended. I’m not sure how realistic the ending was but it made for a good “happily ever after ending.”
It was “steamier” than I’ve read in years, but those passages emphasized the growing attraction between the main characters. I enjoyed reading and visualizing how music sprang to life for them.
Sonata For A Scoundrel by Anthea Lawson is an entertaining historical romance. Ms. Lawson has provided readers with a well-written book and populated it with outstanding characters. Clara composes music but her family claims they are from her brother. Darien is a famous violinist in need of a composer. Clara and Darien’s story is loaded with …
Lots of twists to keep your interest.
Was an enjoyable enough read.
Since this book deals with a female composer and a virtuoso violinist in the mid 1800s, it makes for a refreshing change of pace from the usual romances set among the British peerage and their sphere–although I like those stories, too. Lovers of classical music should certainly enjoy this book especially those who know something about the lives …
