Somewhere in France is a well-researched and riveting first novel. Somewhere in France is accurate to its last heartbreaking detail without being bogged down with unnecessary information. Lilly is a woman caught between the shifting sands of the old aristocracy and her desire to be a thoroughly modern 20th-century woman. Robbie, though misguided …
It took place during WWI so you would have to like historical fiction. The setting at first is England. The girl comes from a wealthy family and wants to help with the war effort. The guy is a Surgeon on the front lines. They met at the beginning of the war, he was a friend of her brother. Of course they are attracted to each other. It is not a …
I haven’t read a lot of WWI historical fiction, but I finally got around to reading this one that I had downloaded to my Kindle awhile back. “Somewhere in France” takes a young woman named Lilly from a Downton Abbey style home who wants more out of life than being rich and pretty — especially when Britain goes to war. She secretly learns to drive …
This is the first Jennifer Robson book I read, and it got me hooked. Her heroine’s struggles to prove herself to her peers as a WWI ambulance driver are as compelling as the love story, which is both sweet and steamy. Robson’s attention to historic detail never overwhelms her wonderful characters.
A different view of WWI thru the eyes of a female field ambulance driver in France during the war. The author expresses the frustrations of women that wanted to do more for the war effort than knit socks for the troups. And the heroines experiences depict the horrors and discomforts that those choices led to.
Exceptionally well researched, draws you into the characters’ lives and their experiences during World War I.
Enjoyed the characters as they developed. The story was also placed and timelined correctly.
Very compelling story with realistic characters. Made you think of how awful it must have been for men and women during wartime. Enlightening historical facts and satisfying ending. Beautifully written. I will buy more books by this author.
I loved, loved, loved this book. It’s about a privileged woman desiring to contribute to the English war effort and what she has to endure. Wonderful.
I loved this book. It had a full range of emotions and a wonderful heartfelt story.
Robson gives us a glimpse into the horrors of war torn France. The relationships that are forged during horrific times are priceless. I enjoyed reading about the comradery of the WAACs.
I didn’t care for the profanity and sexual content. I won’t be reading more from this author.
I borrowed a copy from my local library. All views expressed are my …
Jennifer Robson writes an accurate and poignant story of war time romance. Robbie and Lilly struggled with the challenges of war as well as their growing feelings for one another. A beautiful romance set in the middle of a tragic time in history.
Lilly’s sheltered, aristocratic upbringing is turned on its head at the onset of WW1 when her brother Edward and his working class-bred best friend Robbie join the British army, and she crosses her imperious mother to do her bit. Lilly becomes an ambulance driver, and makes her way to serve at surgeon Robbie’s field station in France. Lilly’s and …
A story of life for women driving ambulances near the Western Front in World War I, giving a clear picture of the horrors of war and the heroism of those who tried to save lives.
A touching love story and interesting background of medical units in WW1. The description of conditions and stress on people doing the work was highly realistic.
Loved the historical details as well as the characters and their stories. The romance was sweet with the perfect amount of build, a great read overall
It was well written with great characters. Have read all her books and liked them all. I recommend reading in order because of repeating characters.
A compelling letter from the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps to one Miss Ashford serves as the blurb for Somewhere in France by Jennifer Robson. After being accepted as a WAAC, Lily Ashford, also known as Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford, leaves her privileged life to become an ambulance driver on the front lines of WWI. Upon arriving, she reconnects …
Not long after The Great War begins, Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford defies her family, ditches her title, learns to drive, and joins the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps – where she is posted somewhere in France as an ambulance driver. Not coincidentally, she is attached the the field hospital where her older brother’s dearest friend is a surgeon. …
I really enjoy historical fiction like this one!
