Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

Not at all sure what I just read
for a first book from an author, I thought it was good.
This is told in a Now, Then and Before chapters. It took a bit to see where the Before chapters were going, then slowly everything starts merging together.
Once I hit the 70% point, I could not put this book down. Very entertaining read littered with clues all through the story as you try to solve the mystery. I thought I knew where this story was going, but three things for sure:
Sometimes I jump to conclusions.
Sometimes heroes can be villains.
“Sometimes I lie.”
I think this is definitely a book that is made to be listened to. The narrator was really good and as I listened to this it felt like I was listening to someone’s secret confessions.
My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.
The story begins as Amber realizes that she is in a coma. She can hear everything going on around her for short periods of time before she fades again. As Amber tries to gather her memories to figure out just how she ended up here we go from her present to a week prior as well as a trip in the past where we are treated to diary entries from 1991/92.
This is the type of book that I feel an in depth review would end up giving too much away so I just want to say a few things. Amber is not always a likable character and yet you will find yourself rooting for her anyway. The imagery as Amber struggles with her memories is fantastic and the story is extremely well written.
Good book. Definitely keeps you reading.
Some books are predictable…not this one!!
I “read” this story as an audiobook and loved it. (That’s generally how I consume thrillers–it’s a genre I enjoy, but when I’m putting my feet up at the end of the day, all I want is something with a love story.) And let me tell you, the week I listened to this, my kitchen was the cleanest it’s ever been. The narration is fantastic–a British woman (the author is from the UK), with the loveliest, most nuanced voice, speaks for the heroine as she desperately tries to piece together what happened and why she’s lying cognizant but unconscious in a coma. Fabulous.
Goodreads Giveaway Winner.
I totally loved this book due to all of the twisty twists and suspense. I am looking forward to reading this author’s next novel.
Great story.
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.
Amber Reynolds wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. But, she can everything that is going on around her. Every conversation, every gentle touch, every unwanted advance.
Amber Reynolds is trapped inside her own hell, as she listens to voices of the present and the past…and tries to unravel exactly what happened to her, then and now. For the first ten years of her life, Amber had a charmed life at home with a Mummy and Daddy, who loved her and spoiled her. Life at school was less fairy tale and more nightmare. Amber was not liked by the other children, and bullied often. But, all that changed when Claire became her friend. Claire, who was always there to scare of the bullies.
After the death of Claire’s parents, Amber’s parents adopted Claire. Amber and Claire became sisters. Amber fell into the shadows, and Claire became the beloved daughter. Amber knows Claire’s secrets, but somehow, Claire always has the upper-hand. After all, Claire protects Amber from the bullies, even now, when they are both grown-up married women.
The police suspect that Amber’s husband is the reason that she is in the hospital. Amber isn’t so sure herself. She tries to put the pieces back together, but will she wake up in time to save Paul or point the accusing finger his way?
This is an excellent debut psychological thriller filled with twists and turns. I look forward to more titles by this author.
Although I had to click ‘recommended’ to write this review, it comes with a warning. This book dragged until I hit the 60% mark in my Kindle (or thereabouts). The plot and book dragged for the majority of the book and then it took off. Enjoyed the latter part of the book but I’m not sure it was worth it. I’d give the book 2.5 stars and move on quickly to read something else.
Great book! Great page-turner! Kept me guessing and I want to read it again now that I’m done. The ending is completely unexpected and leaves you questioning everything!
What an intriguing read with twists and turns from first page to last. The main character leads the reader on a vivid journey of past & present conflicts which ultimately ends with quite a surprise.
Twisted plot line will keep you intrigued beginning to end. Great wordplay and a real page turner!
I couldn’t put the book down until I read the last word. The twists and turns were breath-taking.
Initially let me thank Flat iron Books and author Alice Carney for allowing me the privilege of reading and reviewing this extraordinary book objectively.
I cannot get my mind to set to rights what happens in this book. I friendship of the most bizarre and horrid. Amber and Claire begin as friends. Or are they? A codependent relationship where one’s parents for and she becomes sister to her friend. Unexpected journey through a twisted life between two girls.
Absolutely took my breath away as I continued to guess wrongly what was going on. The twists fantastic! I suggest questioning your friendships after reading this amazing, original thriller. I find myself needing to re-read it! The shock is intense. What is it that causes envy? What is it about children? A marriage misinterpreted, a man obsessed? This book is still haunting me even as I have finished it! I dare you to read this masterpiece in the night! A MUST READ!
I loved this book, I knew there would be twists. I had lots of theories but none of them were right, which I also loved that it wasn’t obvious. I definitely recommend this book.
Every once in a awhile I read a book and there is a twist that I didn’t see coming at all. This was one of those rare times. I don’t want to give anything away but I will make a point of saying that it was one particular twist that knocked my socks off and had me reevaluating everything I had read to that point. This book was loaded with twists and turns (I’m sure many will feel they are excessive). At times, I had to take a moment to gather my thoughts and work through what was going on. The twist at the end did leave me with a feeling of ambiguity but I was okay with that. As a matter of fact, I intend on reading it again with the new information I now have!
Highly recommended but I must warn you: if you intend to read this book and you’re the type of reader who must have definitive answers, this is NOT the book for you. In all fairness, the author gives you a mighty bold warning: Sometimes I Lie.
This was a terrific read. The story grabbed me on the first page and didn’t let go. The plot twist left me baffled and scratching my head. The best book I’ve read in a long while.
Kept me guessing
