As always, Jen’s given me a happily ever after worth waiting for! Swoon worthy and romantic. I loved it!
First off this is a novella part of the Stay series and no you don’t have to read the full-length novels first. Like all 1001 Dark Nights novellas, this book can be read as a stand-alone.
I very much enjoyed this book. It doesn’t feel rushed at all and a good thing this is short because I couldn’t stop reading.
I do highly recommend this book and this series.
I first connected with Jennifer Probst’s books a few years ago at the beginning of a difficult time in my family. My first loves will always be The Billionaire Builders, but since then I have consumed every work she’s written, and I am always pulled so deeply into her characters’ lives that I forget what I desperately need to forget, if just for a while.
Ms. Probst’s latest novella—Something Just Like This—was again the perfect escape at the exact time I needed it. The novella is part of the Stay series, and Jonathan Lake and Alyssa Block blend seamlessly with the Bishop family. I really enjoyed getting to know Jonathan better—from his political platform to his personal life—and Alyssa was very intriguing, certainly a departure from Ms. Probst’s usual heroine.
When I preordered Something Just Like This, I had no idea the story was set during the Thanksgiving time frame. But, of course, I read it during Thanksgiving week, and I loved the interaction at their Thanksgiving dinner on the farm.
As much as I have loved all of Ms. Probst’s books and all of her heroes, I’m so happy she wrote more about Jonathan. I loved his story, his background, and I really appreciate the love story in this holiday romance. My only wish is that it was much longer and that there were another two or three (or four) romances coming (immediately!) in that series!
Once again, Jennifer Probst delivers all the feels!
NYC Mayor Jonathan Lake is the type of mayor I’d love to have in my own town. Talented, a people-person, and a crusader, the fact that he’s gorgeous, smart, and witty doesn’t hurt either! WIdowed for 5 years, he’s lived his life for his job and making the city – and the world- a better place. Now, he’s poised to run for governor of the state he loves. Surrounded by exceptional people who support and help him run the city, the path to the governor’s house looks like it’s smooth sailing. Except for one thing: One of those people surrounding him has become to mean more to him than they should. Jonathan’s torn between confessing his feelings and keeping quiet. Jonathan lives in a public world where is private life is anything but.
Jonathan’s personal assistant, Alyssa Block is smart, cool under pressure and wears the motto “never let them see you sweat” like makeup. A master at hiding what she’s thinking-and feeling -Jonathan is afraid to tell her how he feels about her because she’s never given any indication she thinks of him as other than her boss, the mayor. Alyssa may work for the public man of the people, but she protects her privacy with her everything in her and doesn’t want a public life. She’s very happy being a behind the scenes type of girl and she doesn’t want any hint of scandal to ever touch the mayor, especially in the era of #metoo. She’ll protect Jonathan with everything in her and deny what she feels for him just so he can attain his full potential.
But emotions have a way of coming to the surface and when these two finally acknowledge what’s growing between them, it’s a test of their strength and a battle of wills to give in to those emotions or continue to hide them from the world.
This is a short Probst story that has many of the previous STAY characters make appearances, including one of my favorites, Jonathan’s daughter Chloe. Told with her usual feel for deep emotion, witty banter, and exceptional characterizations, SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is SOMETHING ALL HER FANS will want to read. I devoured the work in an afternoon because I didn’t want to put it down. I love rooting for a hero and heroine like Jonathan and Alyssa, two people who put the needs of others before their own.
I was graciously given an arc of this work by the author to read and all opinions are my own. But this is a book all romance readers will enjoy. 5 well deserved stars from me for a book that filled my heart.
I absolutely loved Something Just Like This by Jennifer Probst, a novella in her Stay series, it is an incredible love story. I loved the book that I am looking forward to reading the final novella in the Stay series. I have read other books by Jennifer Probst and really enjoy her wonderfully written stories. Jennifer Probst has once again shown that she is an amazing storyteller. I could not put it down. I loved every page. I really enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Something Just Like This is wonderful love story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud and the bittersweet moments that cause me to sigh, say aww to myself with tears filling my eyes. Something Just Like This is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Something Just Like This is the story of Jonathan Lake, mayor of New York City, and Chole’s father, and his assistant, Alyssa Block. Jonathan has decided to run for the governor of New York. Jonathan has been fighting his feelings for Alyssa for a while. He finally admits to his feelings for her and they share a romantic kiss. Jonathan tells Alyssa that he will do whatever she wants regarding a potential relationship. Alyssa has worked hard to get when she is and is concerned about how it will appear to everyone is she starts dating Jonathan, especially with him running for governor. Things start to change between them, but Alyssa is still apprehensive, especially after a conversation in the ladies’ room has her questioning Jonathan’s feelings for her. They decide to head to Gardiner, NY in the Hudson Valley to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Bishops. Their relationship changes again while spending time away from New York City. Then a surprise plot twist has them announcing their relationship before either one of them really wanted to. My favorite part of Something Just Like This are all the quirky facts that Alyssa discloses throughout the story. They were my favorite lighter parts of the story. I love how Alyssa changes during the story into someone stronger than she thought she was. I love all the descriptions of New York City and the Hudson Valley setting that Jennifer Probst details, it makes me want to visit. My favorite part of the book is the epilogue and how it takes place one year later, I truly love how it goes above and beyond the happily ever after. Something Just Like This is filled with the poignant and bittersweet moments in the story as well as the plot twists, that I have come to love and expect in Jennifer Probst’s stories. I love the cast of characters in Something Just Like This it felt like a family reunion catching up with the all the Bishops. Who doesn’t love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I thoroughly enjoyed Something Just Like This, I highly recommend this wonderful romance.
So good
This novella is such a great addition to the series! Jonathan deserves his hea after being a widower for so long. Alyssa is completely perfect for him!!
Ohhh I had hoped for this story!! I’ve been curious about Jonathan since he was introduced in Start of Something Good. Seeing he and Alyssa dance around their long buried feelings was all I could have hoped for. The mayor and his amazing assistant are both hiding from how they feel. Out of fear. Out of uncertainty. But when their breaking point comes and they give in to what they feel? Oh my how hot!!
Once again Jennifer Probst creates a story full of depth. It was full of great storytelling, wonderful characters and all the things I love about a Probst story. The office place romance is always a favorite of mine and this one did not disappoint! Plus you get the touch base with all the previous couples from this world.
This is a novella by Jennifer Probst that builds upon her Stay series. This book feature’s Chloe’s dad, Jonathan, who is a politician. He’s a successful mayor who is trying to be elected as governor. He and his faithful assistant, Alyssa, have a simmering attraction. They want to give into their feelings but are worried about the impact their relationship will have on the election. There are lots of secondary characters from previous books in this series. It may be a little confusing if you haven’t read those books. Overall, a nice story and a good way to give expand this series.
I was late coming to this brilliant series from Jennifer as I started it with the last book All the roads Lead to You and this novella is a brilliant addition to this sweet, endearing series.
I always think writing Novellas within a series is hard for an author as they are sometimes rushed to get everything in in such a short space but Jennifer has done an amazing job with this one. She has written a complelling novella that is filled with steam, emotion and heart <3 She has written the characters brilliantly giving you the connection with them instantly.
If you haven't read this series before then this is a great introduction to Jennifer Probst style of writing.
A book that oozes dynamism, sexual tension, sensuality and sensitivity as well. Jennifer Probst has the ability to get you into the mind and soul of her characters, because they are realistic and authentic. Jonathan and Alyssa are both dynamic, strong and romantic, who crave for the forever love thing. Furthermore, the author’s love and sensitivity towards animals is always present in the Stay series. A really great book that I enjoyed reading and I fully recommend!
4 stars
Another great installment in the Stay series by Jennifer Probst. Something Just Like This is a beautiful novella about opposites attracting and love growing from respect and friendship. Long enough to make us feel for the characters and root for their HEA but short enough to read in one setting, it’s the perfect beach read. While the rest in the series are also awesome, no need to read them all to enjoy this short but sweet story.

A great romantic read. It is a short read so it can be a great beach read.
Widowed Mayor Jonathan falls for his intelligent personal assistant Alyssa. Alyssa is very smart and is able to hide what she really feels being a ‘mask’. She even hides from the one she wants to love.
But can these feelings stay bated, when both Jonathan and Alyssa realize that they love each other? Is Alyssa able to handle a public life?
I received an ARC from the authot and Candi Kane, I am under no obligation to review.
Another terrific 1001 Nights novella in the wonderfully delightful world of the Bishops that Ms. Probst has blessed us with which includes the NYC Mayor’s lovely daughter, Chloe. This story has the widowed Mayor, Jonathan Lake, as the hot politician considering a run for governor after his very successful first term as Mayor. His right hand is the incredibly efficient Alyssa, who manages his professional life with an ease only accomplished by her intelligence and experience. Alyssa is an understated beauty that is a little awkward but is a master when it comes to supporting her boss. After two years together they both realize their feelings are more than strictly professional but can they move to more than just colleagues? So much to consider with his run for higher office. The optics might be harsh is they move from boss/assistant to lovers. Alyssa likes her place in the background as the person managing the successful Jonathan. What would public life mean for her? Is she strong enough for the spotlight? Jonathan and Alyssa may not have a choice when a foe gets involved. I love anything Bishop and it’s great that they have scooped up Jonathan and Alyssa into their big ole wonderful family with the sexy hot couples and all the crazy animals. I must say Jonathan’s manliness took a hit when he was faced with the monster chicken! Hei Hei 1, Jonathan 0. More Bishops, please. I can’t wait for Chloe’s story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
This is a very quick yet highly entertaining, action packed and emotionally thrilling journey filled with engaging charters, witty banter, sexy fun twists and undeniable passion …. was a great read!
Short and sweet, plus it’s a great read if you’re a fan of the series. So, I have go off and say that I’m still questionable about how all the books in the 1,001 Dark Nights can be read as a standalone. I guess technically it’s true, but all these novellas are definitely more enjoyable if you’ve read from the series.
I did find this one enjoyable, but I didn’t love it as much as the other books in this series. I truly loved that there wasn’t any hidden agendas with the main characters. These two knew what they wanted and no matter, how bad Jonathan wanted things to happen. I liked that Alyssa was more level-headed about it even though I kept shouting, “just do it!”.
Something Just Like This is definitely a great addition to this series and I can’t wait to read more!
**I RECEIVED A COMPLIMENTARY READER’S COPY FROM THE AUTHOR FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR CONTENT OF MY REVIEW**
What a wonderful story. It’s short but it’s a great way to get to know Jennifer’s writing and I’m hooked. I have to read more. Jonathan and Alyssa have a battle ahead of them because he’s in the public eye and she doesn’t want to. It becomes a matter of deciding if he’s worth it. I got frustrated at Alyssa but understood her hesitation. But their attraction and undeniable connection was palpable and it was only a matter of time before it would explode. Can’t wait to read more from this author.
SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS by Jennifer Probst is a contemporary, adult, erotic, romance story line in her STAY series, and the latest addition to the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series of novellas. This is PA Alyssa Block, and NYC mayor Jonathan Lake’s story line. SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. We were first introduced to Jonathan Lake and his daughter Chloe in book three All Roads Lead to You.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Jonathan and Alyssa) SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS follows the friends to lovers, employee/boss relationship between PA Alyssa Block, and NYC mayor Jonathan Lake. Alyssa Block has been Jonathan’s Lake’s PA for close to two years and in the ensuing time, Jonathan has never made his attraction to Alyssa known. When Alyssa brings a ‘date’ to a fund-raising event, Jonathan struggles to keep his jealousy reigned in. A late night car ride finds Jonathan revealing his true feeling, feelings returned by our story line heroine. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Jonathan and Alyssa, and the potential fall-out when Jonathan’s run for governor threatens their fledgling relationship.
Jonathan Lake is a widower with a college aged daughter but our hero believed he had lost his happily ever when his wife died years before. No longer fighting his attraction to his PA Alyssa Block, Jonathan makes his feelings known only days before announcing his plans to run for governor.Alyssa Block hides behind a mask of professionalism but struggles between head and heart when Jonathan suggests they take their relationship to the next level. Having fallen in love with Jonathan months before, Alyssa quickly discovers that their romance is about to become fodder for the media and jealous ex-lovers.
The relationship between Jonathan and Alyssa Is a slow burn of attraction and desire.Biding his time, Jonathan starts a slow seduction of our story line heroine, a seduction that quickly turns into something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top , sexually graphic language and text.
Most of the previous story line couples plays secondary and supporting characters when the Thanksgiving holiday brings together family and friends.
SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is a story of family, friendships, romance and love. The premise is engaging and captivating; the characters are colorful and sassy; the romance is seductive. SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is a wonderfully entertaining addition to Jennifer Probst’s STAY romance series.

Something Just Like This
A Stay Novella
By: Jennifer Probst
*REVIEW*
I’m always glad to read a 1001 Dark Nights novella, and Something Just Like This is a great addition to the collection. Jonathan is a widow of five years with a daughter, and he’s the mayor of New York City. He loves the city and takes his job seriously, but he doesn’t work alone. While Jonathan lives in the public eye, his assistant, Alyssa, is the behind the scenes wizard with all the information. She has no desire to live in the spotlight and is quietly content with her books and a simple life. Jonathan relies on her as his right hand woman, and they share an efficient working relationship. Now, Jonathan has been asked a monumental task-to run for governor. He will be more scrutinized than ever before, and appearances mean everything. Alyssa must be at her absolute best at all times. There is just one little problem. Jonathan can no longer deny his growing attraction to Alyssa, and as it turns out, she is also attracted to him. It’s a terrible conundrum. Regardless of how Jonathan or Alyssa feel, he is still running for governor, and she is still his assistant. Is it better to just go public with this, pretend like it never happened or walk away? An argument can be made either way. This story is sweet, relatable, entertaining and compelling. The characters felt genuine, and I found them very likeable and intelligent, especially with the weight of such heavy decisions. I just wanted everything to turn out fine. Jonathan and Alyssa are perfect together, professionally and personally, but it’s impossible to have it both ways. It’s a bit of a heartache watching the situation play out, but I loved it just the same. The plot has just the right amount of tension and romance and is the perfect length- an overall excellent read!
This was a sweet, endearing read. It reminded me a little bit of the movie “The American President” with Michael Douglas, except on a governor’s level. Alyssa is a strong, educated, dedicated work-horse. Jonathan is a regal, devoted, soft-hearted politician that will do anything to improve his city and state. Together they are forced to be reckoned with. The phrase, “you can’t help whom you fall in love with,” is a declaration of the conflict that Alyssa and Jonathan must face. I enjoyed this book because it also takes place at the bed and breakfast that is a popular spot in her other books. Also, the respect Jonathan shows Alyssa by honoring her wishes displays his stoic and gentleman charm. A cute political romance that you can read cozied up on your couch with.
