Maybe you don’t know your neighbors as well as you thought you did . . .
“This is a very difficult letter to write. I hope you will not hate us too much. . . My son broke into your home recently while you were out.”
In a quiet, leafy suburb in upstate New York, a teenager has been sneaking into houses–and into the owners’ computers as well–learning their secrets, and maybe sharing some of them, too.
Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they’re telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets?
In this neighborhood, it’s not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide . . .
You never really know what people are capable of.

This is my first book by this author. By the other reviews, not her best work. The story involves a murder in a small, tight knit neighborhood. In addition to the murder, Raleigh, a teenager, has been breaking into houses to perfect his computer hacking, and is familiar with many of the neighbor’s secrets. The suspicion for the murder of the young flirtatious neighbor falls upon many of the husbands in turn, culminating with the culprit. A neighbor, Camine, is stirring the pot because she is one of the homes broken into. No spoilers, but I did guess the murderer before the end. The book, while good, seemed to move very slowly, and while I would try another one by this author would not give this one a hearty recommendation.
A fun pageturner with flawed characters galore. Unputdownable.
Really good suspense that kept me guessing!
Shari Lapena’s writing has greatly improved since her first novel. In her latest book, a suburban community is upturned by the recent disappearance of a young, beautiful woman, reported missing by her husband. Not only is Amanda Pierce beautiful, but she is a flirt and has come on to many of the neighborhood men.
Olivia and Paul Sharpe are best friends with Gloria and Keith Newell. The Sharpes discover that their teenage son, Raleigh, has been breaking into houses in the neighborhood. The Newell’s son, Adam, has lately struggled with alcohol, becoming drunk on many occasions. The two women confide in each other.
When Amanda Pierce’s body is found, her husband becomes the main suspect. When it is found that he has been having an affair with a neighbor, the suspicion ratchets higher. Then, it is determined that other neighbors have also been having affairs, and there are many secrets in this quiet neighborhood, where everyone thought their lives were idyllic, but truthfully, they are a mess. Everyone becomes a suspect, no one knows who they can believe, and it all comes crashing down in the finale.
I do think the ending was a bit rushed – and the crime, while understandable, is also a bit extreme. I think most people will be surprised at the ending, as everyone could easily have been the murderer. Ms. Lapena does a good job of throwing a lot of suspicion on all the characters.
This was a very quick read, I read it in just a few hours one afternoon.

Well paced murder mystery set in a neighborhood where everyone has secrets. This is a never-boring page-turner from beginning to end. Quite enjoyable.
Fast-paced fun thriller.
I have read four of Shari Lapena’s books so far and they are all five stars from what I remember. This was was really, really, especially good. Wow, I hope she writes more, and so soon. I’ll have to see what else she has written because I think I need to read them all. There was one character in this book that I was so glad didn’t do it. No, I didn’t guess who did it, and yes, it was easy to follow along even though, oh, wow, I can just sort of imagine the little plot pictures she must’ve drawn as she pieced this together making sure everything matched up if you were to go back through it, like, no “scene discrepancies” or whatever. Amazing. Thanks for the wonderful, terrible, lovely read! I’ll be recommending this to my friend, who first introduced me to this author, but who hadn’t heard about this book yet. She’ll love it.
This novel tells the story of a regular upper middle-class neighborhood with a lot of secrets. Raleigh, the teen son of Olivia and Paul, breaks into houses just to check out what is on the computers. Adam, the teen son of Keith and Glenda, has a drinking problem. Robert and Amanda have marriage issues and Amanda is having an affair with one of the neighbors. But which one? Then, Amanda ends up dead and the unraveling of the mystery begins. I like how the author kept the chapters short and varied the POV between the characters in the neighborhood. I really enjoyed how the author kept me engaged by adding details to the mystery slowly, and I really liked the intelligence of the detectives who would not let go of the clues but followed them doggedly to the end. There is a surprise twist at the end. Fans of mystery/suspense will enjoy this book.
