New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh presents the first historical romance in the Westcott series, where the death of an earl reveals a most scandalous secret. Humphrey Westcott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune and a scandalous secret that will forever alter the lives of everyone in his family—including the daughter no one knew he had… Anna Snow grew up in an … had…
Anna Snow grew up in an orphanage in Bath knowing nothing of the family she came from. Now she discovers that the late Earl of Riverdale was her father and that she has inherited his fortune. She is also overjoyed to learn she has siblings. However, they want nothing to do with her or her attempts to share her new wealth. But the new earl’s guardian is interested in Anna…
Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby, keeps others at a distance. Yet something prompts him to aid Anna in her transition from orphan to lady. As London society and her newfound relatives threaten to overwhelm Anna, Avery steps in to rescue her and finds himself vulnerable to feelings and desires he has hidden so well and for so long.

I love this author’s books
Excellent series
Good development of characters. First part was a little confusing in the introduction of so many characters but as the book progressed so did the characters. I’m assuming as the series progresses so will each relative. I will look forward to finding out more about them–much more enjoyable to read series in order.
I liked Anna–down to earth and unique with an attitude and will of steel regarding her new found family and wealth.
Avery was an unusual character (probably not your typical Regency Duke)–introspective but humorous.
Well written and very enjoyable,
Mary Balogh is in a last of her own! This book is a page-turner that I could not put down!
enjoyed it very much
Enjoyable – would like to read more of this series.
Great by the beach read.
I would read all of her books!
This is a well written book for light reading when you just want to be entertained. I enjoy reading this author.
Good intro to the Westcotts.
Mary Balough writes a great book One of my favorite authors
I love Mary Balough’s work and this is the first in a series with a different approach. A real rags to riches story with romance thrown in. Well worth your time.
One of the best authors. I try to read all her books.
Both main characters didn’t fit societal norms and had difficult lives.
Mary Balogh is my favorite author. She has the ability to write books about people for whom you care for. Always romantic and full of great life lessons.
Mary Balough is amazing!
This is the best regency romance think I ever read. That’s saying a lot since I have been an avid regency romance reader for more years than I care to admit. I stayed up until two o’clock this morning completing it.
Always enjoy Mary Balogh
I’ve read many books by this author and they never fail to deliver. This is one of her best.
