How long would you wait for love?
Max Kaufman was kicked out of his home as a teen and his life has been an uphill battle ever since. From addiction and living on the streets, to recovery and putting himself through nursing school, he’s spent the last ten years rebuilding his shattered sense of self. Now he’s taken a job as a private caretaker to Edward Marsh III, the president and CEO of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Max soon learns Marsh’s multi-billion-dollar empire is a gold and diamond-encrusted web of secrets and lies.
The longer Max works and lives with the Marsh family, the tighter the secrets tangle around him. And his heart—that he’s worked so hard to protect—falls straight into the hands of the distant, cold, and beautiful son of a dynasty…
Silas Marsh is set to inherit the family fortune, but his father is determined his heir be the “perfect” son. Before Silas can take over the company and end its shady business practices, he must prove himself worthy…and deny his true nature.
Silas must choose: stand up to his father by being true to himself and his undeniable feelings for Max. Or pretend to be someone he is not in order to inherit everything. Even if it means sacrificing a chance at happiness and real love.

Man, did I ever stumble across greatness with this novel. It really hit home for me.
At the time of this review, this book has an average rating of 4.58 on Goodreads. That’s insane, right? Actually if you take the time to read this, it isn’t at all. Emma Scott was able to successfully take some sensitive topics and create a beautiful story out of it. The most amazing thing about this book, for me, is that it was based around what happened to my hometown. I wasn’t kidding when I said it really hit home for me.
Max Kaufman hasn’t had the best upbringing. After his father kicked him out being gay as a teen, he was forced to try to make in on the streets. He, like most, fell into some illegal activities – one of them being drugs. Max was able to turn himself around just in the nick of time and grew up to be a empathetic nurse. He starting over fresh, so he jumps at an opportunity to be a caretaker to a billionaire, Edward Marsh – who happens to be the president of Marsh Pharmaceuticals.
Due to the status of his new employer, Max must move into the Marsh residence. It is there that he finds out the true identity of a mysteriously handsome man that Max had ran into a few days before. He cannot deny the instant attraction between him and Silas Marsh.
Silas Marsh, Edward’s son, isn’t thrilled about Max working for his father. He is already jumping through hoops to please his father so that he become Marsh Pharma’s new CEO. While filling in for daddy-dearest, Silas uncovers some disturbing marketing strategies for their number one product – OxyPro. He can’t let his feelings for the hot nurse interfere with stopping Marsh Pharma for supplying addicts with their new favorite fix.
Talking about this book makes me realize how much I truly love it. Like I already mentioned, it tackles some hard hitting topics such as homophobia and drug abuse. I feel like most MM romances tackle homophobia so that wasn’t anything new for me. However, the romance between the main characters was electric. I could literally feel the tension between them until they gave in to each other. And the way Emma Scott wrote their steamy scenes – BRILLIANT! She didn’t make their sex scenes feel like a kink but heartfelt lovemaking. So good!
What I really enjoyed is how Emma put her spin on something that nearly destroyed my hometown. Marsh Pharma is based on Purdue Pharma. The drug OxyPro is actually the opioid Oxycontin.
Purdue Pharma was advertising Oxycontin as the miracle drug. It was told that it helped with everyday pain to emotional distress. A DRUG THAT WAS ONCE ONLY USED FOR END-OF-LIFE COMFORT AND CANCER PATIENTS. They took it one step further when they begin to push it on doctors that were known to prescribe opioids – promising that the addiction rate was as low as 1 percent. This was included by Emma through Silas’s investigation in the book! Love that!
My town was a likely target as our coal mines started shutting down one-by-one. Many families were stressing about income and possible unemployment. So Purdue Pharma had an area filled to the brim with disabled miners and the anxiety-ridden unemployed. When they reached out for help, I’m sure their doctors probably prescribed Oxycontin. And when the addiction sank in, the abuse started.
The New York times actually featured an article about a doctor in my area, his wife, and a nun tried to combat Purdue Pharma. Here is the link if your interested ===> https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/18/health/opioids-purdue-pennington-gap.html
My hometown is still trying to recover from this terrible epidemic. A lot of people moved away to find better jobs – causing more of the businesses to shut down. It is slowly becoming a ghost town. Drugs are still an issue, but I think meth is the new fad.
Anyway, Emma really impressed me with Someday, Someday. It was such a pleasant surprise to pick this up and be hit right in the feels with something so, so prominent and relatable. I cannot wait to read more of her works in the near future.
Thank you Emma Scott and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this wonderful book!
This one kinda shocked me. I figured I would probably enjoy it, I just had that feeling. When I got into it, the first part may have not flowed as nice as the rest of it. After about the half way mark it hit me in the feels a lot more than I expected. Few parts made me cry, which rarely happens, and boy I was moved in several others. I love these guys, and their love for each other was something that will stay with me for a long time.
BTW….as the sister of a gay man…this was handled with the upmost respect. I appreciate that so much. I could never had done what was done to these men, but the point Emma was trying to get across is one everyone needs to learn – well at least I hope so. Thank you Emma, so much.
I absolutely devoured Someday, Someday by Emma Scott. It was emotional, raw and heartbreaking. It deals with some very serious subject matter and I could not put it down. The author gave us a powerful story not only of love, but of second chances, understanding and forgiveness.
Max has not had an easy life. Kicked out by his parents for who he is, he had to learn not only to survive on his own but recover and build something for himself. Silas Marsh seems to lead a life others would envy, but not everything is as it seems. When Max and Silas meet, can they learn acceptance and let love in? Their journey is not an easy one, but it was compelling and honest to the core. A beautiful and touching story that I highly recommend.
4.5-stars. Read and reviewed for Reviews From the Heart.
Happy reading!
Words can not express my deep respect and love for this book. I wanted to leave a well thought out review, but I need my head to catch up to my heart. Let me say this was one of my top reads of 2019.
Oh my goodness, when you read an author for the first time and you know you’ll hunt down her back list. That’s this book, just so good. So emotional, so powerful and unforgettable.
Two men, both with mega baggage for being true to themselves. Love is love, or is it? One grew up on the streets, the other a billionaire, severely traumatised and living a lie. Both with fathers from a homophobic and close minded generation.
I had no idea that kind of therapy was happening in the western world, scary stuff.
The epilogue was brilliant, after all the tears I had a warm heart…ok I was still in tears but happy tears.
A fantastic love story, I highly recommend it.
5+++ stars
So happy to run into this special story, such an exceptional one! Highly recommended!
That title… my goodness, it’s a devastating statement!
After Max was kicked out of his home by his father, he saw rock bottom. He fought hard to come up again. He is a fighter, vulnerable and lonely.
He wants to try to reconnect with his family. Being back in his hometown he got work as a personal caretaker. The old man is ill and needs care. No one can know because in the billionaires’ world illness is not done.
Silas Marsh is indoctrinated by the most horrible evil in Alaska and the only thing is left of him is a mask and all the degenerative lines put in his head. There is no real Silas, he is what ‘the coach’ and his father wants him to be and made of him.
Now his father is ill and he has to take care of the company on his own.
When his father’s caretaker steps in his life will never be the same.
“Me and all my “wisdom” went home alone.”
Silas is cold, ice-cold, but through the tiny cracks, there is warmth seeping in, and hope.
Working for Marsh senior who is homophobic to the core, isn’t easy. He is dictating everyone’s life and especially Silas’.
Silas has to climb mountains to survive life. There are a lot of obstacles to take. Silas is stuck, stuck between his hateful father, the life-destroying company and Max.
“It’s worse”
Two men with beautiful souls, with so much love they could light up the universe.
What a magnificent story. So much story, so many feelings and of all kind! Max is emphatic, he understands what Silas needs, even without words. Silas can’t believe his new reality.
Two torn men, broken by the people who should love them but failed strongly. Arisen by their strength and the care of the other. All their encounters are intense, their lovemaking sensual, needy and emotional. The healing process was hard, the redemption liberating, that is where the light came in.
One special, wonderful personality needs a spotlight and that Is Eddie, Silas’ brother. His part brings so much delight into this story!
Beautifully developed personalities, unbelievable impressive content. The whole picture is splendidly written!
This is my first full length Emma Scott story & what a way to pop my cherry. This book was just beautiful.
It was heartfelt and honest. It was raw and emotional. It made me cry. It made me rage and it absolutely made me fall in love with her storytelling.
Max and Silas are two broken men. Broken in very different ways but both so deserving of a HEA. I sighed a lot in this story. Both in happiness and sadness but I will say that even in the sad moments I still felt hopeful. Absolutely recommend.
“You can choose a different life. Choose me, Silas. I’ll love you for who you are, and we’ll give a shot at happy.”
I love Emma Scott’s book because of the intense feelings her characters provoke. Her stories are emotional and uplifting. Her characters have this inner chore of strength and sensibility. They are people you would want to know and have as a friend or a lover. Even the bad ones are people you could feel some pity for, they are not completely evil, so even though you hate their actions, the hate is not all encompassing.
This is a man to man love story, so I was very curious to see how it would go, and I have to say, I was immersed, enthralled, and involved with these two phenomenal guys. Even though Max is gay, he will still be my book boyfriend. I found him fantastic. After all he went through, he emerged as an emphatic, strong, wise individual. No wonder Silas fell in love with him so fast!
Max was thrown out of his house when he was sixteen because his father found out he’s gay. Through the years after, he was homeless and drug-addicted, he prostituted himself for drugs until a good man took him out of that world. He pulled himself out of the void by his nails, until he graduated university and became a nurse. When he joined a group to give home care to a very wealthy and sick old man, he met Silas.
“Max. Tall, dark-haired, a wide mouth, and brown eyes that were sharp with intelligence and warmth. Kindness. The cut of his clothes—the way he wore his jeans, and how his black leather jacket lay over his broad chest and shoulders—told me he was built. Not as big as me, but he took care of himself, of his body…”
During one of his NA meetings, this guy dressed in a black hoodie and sunglasses would come to the meetings and sit in the back. There was something about him that called Max’s attention. The guy didn’t want to share and wouldn’t stay long but Max perceived he needed help and absolution.
Silas was the son of a very wealthy man. He lost his mother when he was young and his father lost his humanity after that loss. He was fixed on forming his son into a worthy heir who would continue the legacy of his pharmaceutical empire. He demanded perfection and would settle for nothing less. In this pursuit of the perfect son, he made his son go through a brutal treatment that almost killed him, all with the goal of achieving the perfection he sought. Silas drowned all his feelings and preferences and adhered to the requirements of his father and his station, to the extent of being engaged to a woman he did not love.
“Mercilessly cold and unforgiving. Like the frigid waters of Copper Lake where he’d sent me for six months in the dead of winter. He’d taken everything from me. Because I was defective.”
This perfect life became unglued when he met Max, who came to treat his father’s illness. There was the suspense of being caught, the yearning and hankering for all he was denied, the repressed desires and the devil on his shoulder that kept telling him he was worthless, he was nothing and he had to toe the line to amount to something. I saw Silas as a broken man, who held so much love and need for love, had such an incredible gift for music that was to be suppressed because it was for sissies. Instead of celebrating all that his son was, his father suppressed it and demeaned it and instead, got a cold box of a man.
Luckily, Max was there to defrost all the feelings and bring out the beauty that was Silas. Both Max and Silas are magnificent men, with such beautiful souls, so much love to give, and it was such an incredible injustice that they were denied the accolades they deserved, just because of their sexual tendencies.
“It was a thousand wishes coming true. A thousand broken promises to myself becoming whole. A hundred black nights of ice and shock, fear and shame, followed by hundreds more of self-denial and starvation, all washed away under the perfection of this moment with him.”
The one fantastic character that I fell immediately in love with was Silas’ brother, Eddie. He has Aspergers, he was funny and incredibly intelligent. He added so much heart to this story!
Another important aspect brought forth by the story is the role played in pharmaceutical companies, such as owned by Silas’ father, who manufacture opioids and distribute without thought of the social and mental devastation it causes in people. Their goal is income without conscience, greed without social responsibility. This caused Silas personal and mental grief, as he himself was a victim of the epidemic.
There were so many aspects and levels in this book, and the author did an outstanding job of presenting everything in such a coherent manner, with both characters and the social message in such a humane and compassionate form. I fell in love with Silas and Max and felt such longing for them to be real and accessible. Such is the power of Emma Scott.
4.5 stars
“I promised to protect my heart and instead I ripped it out of my chest and handed it to Silas Marsh.”
If there is one author out there who’s aiming for a readers heart and will never miss the bulls eye, it’s Emma Scott. Seriously. Since I started reading her books, each and every single one of them hit my heart and soul like a sniper hits his target and never misses.
Someday, Someday is a beyond beautiful and soul touching m/m romance that will give you all the feels. This book lives and thrives from its moving characters, with souls so deep like the ocean. And Emma Scotts writing skills bring them to live like no other can.
Brilliant book about finding your way back to life through falling in love with a healing soul that seeks you out under millions.
“Someday isn’t a day of the week. It doesn’t come around automatically. You gotta go out there and get it.”
What an emotional ride! Silas and Max are two amazing men that are brought together by their history of addiction. Max then unknowingly becomes a caregiver in Silas’s family and they realize they have more in common, as they each come from shattered families. This is a story that touches on many issues that are present in today’s society and makes it heartbreakingly real. The journey to healing is heartfelt and realistic. The happily ever after was perfect.
OMG I don’t know where to start with this book! I loved it from the very beginning and I could not put it down! Emma Scott is the queen of writing real life romance that will pull at your heart! This MM read so dang fabulously written and truly hit on real life scenarios that my heart was pounding to the conclusion! Definitely a must read!
Wow, there’s a lot going on in this one. Homophobia, big bad pharma, conversion therapy, drug addiction, a budding MM relationship, loads of family drama and more. I love Emma Scott’s writing and her wonderfully heartfelt storylines and complex characters. This one certainly has both. It seems like everyone is venturing into the MM arena; some with great success and others not so much. There is a talent when conveying the sensuality and complexities of the physical side of a MM relationship without being salacious. This one was lacking an element of sensuality for me. But the telling of the love between two people that just happen to be male was absolutely beautiful. Both Max and Silas were so likable and really came alive as two men struggling with family drama and horrible events related to their sexuality and fighting for a relationship that seems doomed from the start. The author delivers on her trademark angst, heart-wrenching drama and swoon-worthy romance in this love story. Two of my favorite characters were the lovable Eddie and the bubbly Faith. If you’re a crier grab the tissues because there are several tear jerking moments. It all wraps up a little too conveniently for me but the epilogue was fantastic. Worth the read! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Wow. Just wow. This was my first book by Emma Scott and let me just tell you I was BLOWN away. I absolutely LOVED this book. I adored Max and Silas and their love story. Two people haunted by the ghosts of their past are brought together in a not for the faint of heart romance. This was one of those books that MAKES YOU FEEL. So much angst!!
I loved Max’s unrelenting loyalty and his kindness. I loved the way he loved so fiercely. And oh Silas. He was the kind of man who tried to shield his heart from the world, but Max saw through that wall. And he worked on breaking it down.
This is a heartbreaking yet beautiful story of 2 people who learn to love together and move on from their past.
I highly recommend to anyone who loves a book where two people fight for each other, love fiercely and protect each other at all costs. I wish I could read it for the first time again.
3.5 STARS!!!
This is not my first book from this author so I was a little surprised that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did her other books. Don’t get me wrong because it was a good story, but I truly expected something with a little more “happy” feel to it. Silas and Max both had rough childhood and both of them struggled not only with the choices their parents made regarding their life but with everything that came afterward for years. I enjoyed both of their characters along with Silas brother Eddie. I do wish I felt a bit more chemistry between Silas and Max. The ending was sweet in a lot of ways that both men deserved and the whole message in the story was not only eye opening but real. This wasn’t my usual 5 star read from this author but I definitely look forward to reading more of her books.
This is a story of hope, of courage, of forgiveness, and of love. It’s also heartbreaking and compelling. It shows how people can triumph over adversity even when it seems that hope is out of sight.
I don’t usually read a lot of MM but knew that in the capable hands of Emma Scott(which it happens is her first) this story would be remarkable and to no surprise it definitely was magnificent. It let me feel both the highs and lows, the good and the evil, and the hope and redemption.
Silas Marsh and Max Kaufman are amazing men that completely wrap themselves around your fingers. The way the author opens them up and exposes their vulnerabilities and their fears is methodical and endearing. Each are broken in their own way but together they find the strength and conviction to survive and thrive. Both men have backgrounds that strike a nerve with one another and when they do meet, “us” is something that will happen……..it’s just a matter of Someday.
Besides being a romance, this book touch’s on the opioid crisis occurring in present day as well as LGBTQ issues that affect both Max and Silas. I will say that Eddie Marsh, Silas’s brother, is a page stealer as he has his own issues with Asperger. The author did not shy away from tough and relevant topics in writing this wonderful romance. Including family that wasn’t thrilled with the lifestyles their son’s lived and the lengths they did to try and fix them. As much as this is a wonderful story, there are moments of anguish and heartbreak that really make the story very emotional but in the end, I just smiled and felt a happy heart for Max and Silas, for Eddie, for Max’s family and eventually Edward too.
One again, Emma Scott brings readers a powerful and emotional read! I don’t expect anything less from her and whenever I start reading one of her news releases, I make sure to have tissues on hand! That being said, WOW! What a gorgeous story. I was deeply invested in the lives of Max and Silas and wept with them as they told us their stories. I felt their grief, their loneliness, and the hope that eventually started to seep through. I don’t know how Emma does it, but with each release she slays the topics at hand. This one deals with sensitive subject matters but it’s important to read because these issues are REAL and PREVALENT throughout the world. Emma writes it all with poise, care, and beautiful insight. I loved it to pieces. So much that I know I’m going to need this one on my bookshelves as it’s one to be revisited in the future.
If you enjoy MM romances (this is her first MM romance and is PERFECTION), books that deal with tough issues, and emotional reads then you won’t want to miss this one. I devour and fall in love with each and every one of Emma’s books and I know many readers feel the same. Highly recommended!
Emma Scott is a newish author to me, so I’m not 100% sure what to expect when reading her work. That said, Someday, Someday was an excellent read that kept me guessing as to what would happen next.
The main characters are Max, a recovering addict who turned his life around to become a nurse, and Silas, a young man trying desperately to earn his father’s approval.
While Someday, Someday is a romance in the sense that the developing relationship between Max and Silas is one of the plot lines, it is also much more than that. We also see Max work on repairing family relationships lost when his sexual identity came out as a teenager and Silas fighting to claim his identity, do the right thing for his family’s business, and try to protect/help his beloved brother.
All of these different plot points, plus the elements of addiction and PTSD addressed sound like the book should be a hot mess. The fact that the book is compelling with characters that I found myself rooting for speaks to Ms Scott’s excellent story telling. The various pieces of the story are woven together in such a way that that everything flows well and the multiple relationships in the book get their resolution. I enjoyed the emotional growth and development of all the characters- especially Max and Silas.
Loyal readers of Ms Scott will see glimpses/references to some of her other books, but this is very much a standalone effort.
Reading an Emma Scott book and you know that it’s probably going to make your heart bleed. I love how she takes current issues and gives it a story, a name. It’s hard not to fall in love with Max and Silas. Their hard, hard struggles, just to only be themselves make their great moments and triumphs that much sweeter. We all deserve love, from family, friends, and significant others. When you’re denied from someone who should be designed to love you without question, it makes you question yourself and who you are. Eddie was a pleasant surprise, and I loved his role in this story.
Someday, Someday by Emma Scott was a beautifully heartbreaking and sweet love story that pulled on my heartstrings and eventually put a bright smile on my face. My heart ached for Silas and Max and the pain and heartache they had to endure. I am a strong believer that LOVE IS LOVE and everyone deserves to find their happily ever after, even if others don’t always agree with it. Their story left me breathless as I devoured every moment of love, pain, and heartache that was intertwined between them.
This is a MM romance at its finest and Emma Scott delivered on a story unlike anything I have ever read. My heart was beating in overdrive, leaving me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Just when I thought I had things figured out, things were turned completely upside down and I was left even more shocked time after time. There was so much to love about these two and my heart swooned every step of the way.
This story is a MUST READ and I can’t even begin to express how much I loved this book! It was seriously an amazing read and you all need to read it, even if MM romance isn’t your genre.
Emma Scott is the kind of storyteller who consistently creates an emotional reading experience for her readers – one that allows us to truly feel every success and failure of the main characters…every high and low in their lives that constantly change them, transforming them in ways that they might not even truly understand but in ways that readers see nonetheless.
Because Scott’s stories deal with the harsh realities of life, the consequences of actions…the aftermath of loss…the struggles of self identity and purpose, readers can’t help but identity with the plights of her heroes and heroines, or in the case of her newest release Someday, Someday, two heroes who deserve every happiness in life…every ounce of love and affection that comes their way – a lifetime of moments that show them just how worthy they are of everything simply because they’re human beings…they’re men whose hopes and dreams matter regardless of other people’s prejudices and/or hatred.
There’s a process that people go through in order to heal, and it’s not something that happens instantly…it’s a messy, treacherous path – one that moves people forward and backward…makes them doubt progress…makes them question if they have what it takes to endure…to move past the pain and to come out on the other hand more whole than they’ve ever been.
Max found his someday, but it took him a long time to find it in a way that lasted…in a way that allowed him to consistently move forward…in a way that he knew his self-worth and he refused to allow anyone else to dictate how he saw himself. Max Kaufman has a heart of gold, but it’s one that he had to put back together himself after his family turned their backs on him because of his sexual orientation and living on the streets lead him down a dark path that did its very best to destroy him, and for a time, that’s exactly what Max allowed it to do, but there did come a time when he found his way back toward the light, working his program and doing everything in his power to beat his demons, lessening their hold on him.
Max has battle wounds and scars from just how much life has knocked him down…by just how inconsequential he was viewed by his family because he preferred the company of men rather than women. It was almost like because Max had already hit his rock bottom already facing the rejection of his family and the addiction that almost overpowered him, he can help Silas find his way, but Silas has to be willing to accept the aid.
Silas’ past is just as harrowing as Max’s, but because his situation is drastically different, the cruelty he faced by his own father and his inability to truly be himself is just as damaging and perhaps even more so due to the fact that Silas’ life has to be perceived as picture perfect, his mask needs to stay in place and that facade is one that allows for no emotions, no feelings that might be seen as inappropriate for the future of Marsh Pharmaceuticals. And the most heartbreaking aspect of Silas’ life is the fact that he has to choose between his father’s expectations and his own personal desires and needs, which, according to his father, have no place in his life as the man who is to take over his family’s business.
Wounds heal, lessons get learned, and growth happens, but only if the right opportunities are there and taken, instead giving up or being unable to endure. Silas could not have found a better person than Max to help him realize exactly who he is and who he wants to be despite anyone else’s expectations. And while Max and Silas definitely need to play the long game in order to understand what they could mean to each other if they only took a chance, stood their ground, and fought for one another in all ways that truly matter.
Max and Silas’ story is so much more than a romance, which is not surprising given that that is exactly how I feel each time I finish one of Emma Scott’s books. Because there’s a complexity to the characters she creates, readers become more than invested in their lives, feeling their pain…their anguish…their devastation…their self-recriminations, but it also allows us to revel in their successes…in their growth…in their ability to put themselves first for once when that hadn’t been a priority or even a possibility for quite some time.
Once again, Emma Scott owned me with Someday, Someday – my tears, my smiles, my queasy stomach and my frayed nerves as she took me through Max and Silas’ journey, both individually and as, hopefully, someday, a couple.
This is must read M/M.
