When Ashley Miller sees a Craigslist ad for an all-expense paid vacation to Scotland with a handsome Highland “escort”, she’s all over it. Worn out from working two jobs to pay off the debts her scam artist ex-husband left her with, she just needs a friggin’ break already. Rolling, misty mountains of the Scottish Highlands, here she comes! But one minute she’s sipping a latte and the next she’s … next she’s zapped to the 2nd century and promptly informed she’s managed to wed her handsome Highlander without even an “I do.” Oh, hell no.
After a devastating tragedy, Connall’s tribe is left with few marriageable women. When his Druid priest suggests a place filled with bonnie lasses, he of course agrees to go fetch one for himself. But nothing prepared Connall for his sassy new wife, nor his tribe for a woman determined to see equal rights for all women.
Now the men are threatening revolt if he can’t rein his young wife in, but it might be too late. The women are demanding the men get “woke”—which of course makes no sense because they already woke that morn—and give women “the vote,” whatever the bloody hell that is. Despite all that, Connall can’t stop wanting to convince his wife to get naked, and he’s starting to wonder if he’s been bewitched.
Only the more he gets to know her, the more he starts to think she’s just what they needed. If only he survives her next demand…

An interstiing time travel romance where a Druid uses magivi to send a Scottish man to find a wife. He brings back to his homeland a modern day, independent woman.
I enjoyed this and would read more in the series. I don’t read too terribly many time travel books and might have me looking into more. It had a good world building and it was interesting to read something set in that time period. I felt the characters had substance. The writing was good. Overall, a good book.
Absolutely enjoyed this book, so much so, I looked for another hoping it was a series. Characters were believable, I loved the time period setting. Highly recommend this book.
I adored this clever, unique twist on a hot Scot time travel story. The characters are unique and funny and charmingly flawed, and I loved how they both had to give a little to get what they ultimately wanted. Highly recommend!
enjoyable book. a different take on time travek.
I throughly enjoyed this story. Ashley & Connell were so much fun. 2019 woman meets 156A.D.male. Oh, ya know how that’s going to fly. Give this book a bit of your time and consider it well spent. ±P±
Loved it! Hope we find out the secret to the eldest brother in a sequel.
Great book with wonderful creative characters, with a spenciful ending .
This book proves that, even if we don’t sometimes know what is best for us, fate does!
Fed up trying to pay off her ex-husbands debt, Ashley answers a craigslist job ad and meets a time traveling Scotsman desperately seeking a wife. After travelling back to 156 A.D. Ashley learns she must spend a month with hunky Connall before she can travel back home. Some Like It Plaid by Angela Quartes’ is a fun, fast paced read with plenty of hot and steamy romance along the way. If you love time travel romance and hot Scots this book is for you.
I give this book 3,5 stars.
I had hoped for a romcom when I saw the cover and read the resume of the book. The beginning didn’t disappoint but then when the two main characters time traveled to Scotland in 156 AD the story became a lot more serious and almost a history lesson.
I really loved learning about Scotland’s history in 156 AD and the raids and fights between the clans or the Romans that invaded the country at the time or how they lived and how the women was undermined and wasn’t aloud in the clan meetings. But it wasn’t what was promised I think.
I loved the two main characters Ashley and Connall and the chemistry between them is scorching hot and their sex scenes are so steamy especially the cave scene. All the other men in the clan are amazing and I look forward to Connall’s brothers story next.
If you like magic there is a good amount of this in the story too.
I can recommend this book if you like Scottish history, big burly Scottish warriors, great feministic women and an amazing steamy romance.
I got this book from Entangled Publishing and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Granted, historical romance is not typically my thing, but I’ve read and enjoyed other things by Angela Quarles. (In fact, her Stolen Moments series is one of my all-time favorites!) So I thought I would give this book a try. It was… okay. Not great, not horrible, just okay.
The first ten percent or so is the backstory, concerned with explaining to the reader how and why Connall ends up traveling from ancient Scotland to present-day New York City. It’s a bit confusing at first, but things fairly quickly fall into place so that we become aware of what is going on. Both Connall and Ashley adapt remarkably well to their new surroundings, although he does a bit better than her at accepting things as they are.
Lack of communication between the two creates a myriad of problems along the way, as they get to know one another and deal with the various issues of life in a archaic environment. The biggest issue is that both have feelings for each other that they are unwilling to express, and expectations that they don’t bother to explore. Ashley ended up in a much better situation – regardless of how primitive it was – than she was experiencing in her own time. And (although I totally agreed with her), I found it absolutely absurd that Ashley would expect Connall to change everything about his entire society to suit her 21st Century viewpoints. But Connall expecting her to fit right in to his lifestyle after having seen what she was used to was nearly as bizarre. I did like the eventual compromise that they came to, but it was certainly hard won.
The one real love scene between them was pretty spicy, and some of the other love scenes were equally intense. The interactions between these two were a bit flat and sometimes seemed kind of forced. Still, you couldn’t help rooting for them to realize and delcare their love for one another. When they finally did, the writing was a bit sappy, but the sentiment was delightful.
The peripheral characters were interesting and a lot of the side action was intriguing. There was mention of several characters who story archs were never fleshed out much, leading me to believe that this may be the first of a series with more episodes to come. I’d be interested in checking those out to see where things go from here.
Funny time travel romance. Be aware however, there is lots of explicit sex.
I’ve never read any books by this author, so this book was a nice surprise. It’s a time travel romance that’s laugh out loud one page and cry me a river next. Throw in a druid, a 2nd century hunk, from what’s later known as Scotland, looking for a wife, Craigslist and a young lady on the run from bill collectors on debt created by her ex-husband and you’re in for a ride. Sit back and enjoy.
Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles is the story of Connall and Ashley.
Ashley is stressed to no end with two jobs and trying to make things right after a awful husband. So when she happens to see a Craig List add for a paid trip to Scotland she is all in. But what ends up happening is that she is transported to the age old century highlands where she finds out she is being married to Connall a highlander. Ashley tries to fight the attraction between them and starts an up roar with her modern day attitude.
This was a funny read of course with Connall learning the modern day way and Ashley doing the same in his time frame. Loved this time travel romance!
Escape with Ashley to the misty hills of Argyll and a mountain of a man
This is a well-written romance with heat, action, romance and a bit of a lesson about early Scotland. Set in present day San Francisco and second century Scotland, author Angela Quarles did a great job bringing the past to life.
Beleaguered modern woman Ashley is ripe for escape from her hand to mouth life in San Francisco. Tempted by an ad offering a position in Scotland, she goes for it, expecting a work holiday with stunning views and ends up in 2nd century Scotland. Connall, the kilted, perfect male specimen who comes to the future looking for a wife, has a soft and patient side, but he has his stubborn, alpha male moments that throw a wrench in his relationship with his modern born and bred bride. Will she stay in the past and build a life with this chief’s son or will she go (back to her own time)?
Quarles created a modern heroine who is brave, resourceful and far more successful in making the transition between times and cultures than I had expected. The author also came up with some interesting twists to the magic of time travel, like giving Ashley the gift of Google-type knowledge of weather and events that she puts to effective use. I also liked that the author did not soak the dialogue in brogue. For me, deciphering heavy brogue makes reading a chore. All of these elements were great touches that added to my enjoyment of the romance.
Thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I’ve read some time travel romances before, but never one that drew me in like Some Like it Plaid! I loved Connall! He seemed like he would be a big, tough warrior (& he is) but I loved that he is a big marshmallow inside. Ashley was so freaking awesome! I loved that she was so excited to help Connall’s people and especially help the women have their voices heard in the tribe!
The whole book just moved so smoothly! There was the perfect touch of drama but the focus was Ashley & Connall learning to understand and love each other!!
I love time travel. Scottish time travel is my favorite and this author has a way to suck you into the time period with her heroine.
You can feel the tension in Ashley when she discovers she has been taken back in time to a place so different from anything she has ever known
Connell makes you giggle and sympathize with him when he is in Ashley’s time while he tries to understand all things modern.
Don’t miss this wonderful story!
I really, really liked this book!
Time Travel Romance has long been a favorite of mine and this one just nailed it!
First of all, this was not the typical send the h back to the 1800s where we already know how everyone lived, what the political climate was like, how society worked, etc. No, this wonderful author sent us all the way back to 150 AD!! To the Highlands of Scotland long before there even WAS a country of Scotland!!
Secondly, the h actually struggled to adapt to the climate and cultural change and she did NOT immediately fall in love with the H. It was so interesting having the author take us back to a time in history that we know so little about and not only experiencing it through the eyes of the people who actually lived then but also as seen by someone from our present time having to learn to deal without any of the simplest things we all take for granted on a daily basis.
The romance was gradual as if this could have happened between them naturally and even though the sex was definitely steamy, it did not happen right away and that also felt like it happened as a natural progression of their attraction to each other.
The snarky humor the author managed to intermingle throughout the book was so great! I could really visualize a person saying these same things to themselves after being sent so far back in time and having to deal with so many changes in lifestyle as well as the difficulty communicating what to us would be commonplace procedures and ideas.
I certainly hope there are going to be more books featuring other members of this tribe during this time period because I feel like I really got to know these people and want to continue reading about more HEAs for them!
I love having tidbits of history in my stories. This did not disappoint! Including the Romans, the wall, the era depicted in wonderful descriptions, who knew you could do all this in a highlander story. Ashley and Connall have a snappy banter and play their parts well for the time they come from. Full of the great quirks of someone from our era thrown into a past time where nothing makes sense. I truly enjoyed the fun “google” part – you will have to read it to know what I’m talking about! A great weekend read that hits all the romantic feels with a happy ever after.
