There’s nothing like a summer escape. A sun-kissed story about living life to the full.In the month from hell, incurable optimist Anna has lost her father and her job, and her trademark smile is dimming. Clearing out her dad’s house, she discovers a postcard of a beautiful sandy beach and a map with a route plotted to the Greek island of Kefalonia. With an empty summer stretching ahead, Anna’s … summer stretching ahead, Anna’s eyes stray to her father’s old camper van. Next thing she knows, she’s hitting the road with friend Demi in tow, on a course from Salford to Skala!
Over one unforgettable summer, Anna and Demi make their rickety way along the sparkling Mediterranean coast, the hot sun shining down on their frequent mishaps with cheerful local characters. It’s the trip of a lifetime, and the scent of lemons in the air – as well as an unexpected romance – are just what Anna needs to awaken her inner Greek goddess.
But there are big surprises in store when they arrive at the island paradise, which could change both women’s lives forever. And as summer comes to an end, Anna has to decide whether she has had enough of the Greek life, or whether this is only just the beginning…
A joyful, hilarious summer read, perfect for fans of Carole Matthews, Jenny Colgan and Sophie Kinsella.

When I first grabbed this book I was expecting a little summer rom-com, which was just what I had needed. I was slightly saddened to find that this was a bit more of chick-lit with the main character Anna finding herself while one a European road trip. I also didn’t find this to be “laugh out loud funny” as it’s marketed as. With that said, this is the kind of book that you’d want to take with you to the beach, one that doesn’t require a lot of brain power to read and nothing too heavy.
This story had a lot of secondary characters with storylines of their own, causing them all to fall kind of flat and lacking detail or depth. In general, there was a lot of extra fluff and repetitiveness which left the storyline lacking more often than not. Oddly enough, I found that there was an unnecessary amount of detail but into the food that Anna ate, the passage of time was marked but what she ate each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While I enjoyed the author describing some of the Greek dishes that she ate, I didn’t need to know what she had for breakfast each and every morning.
Overall, this was an okay summer read if you want something mindless and without too much depth.
Just lovely! An emotional and fulfilling road trip to Greece
Some Like it Greek is a lovely story of two women forging an enduring friendship during a road trip from England to Greece.
Anna, 31yo, had just lost her father and been cheated by her never-do-well boyfriend. While boxing her father things, she finds some pictures of a road trip he made to Greece when he was young and is enchanted by the place and the experience.
When the bank she works for offered voluntary redundancies, Anna decided to take the money and go on a little adventure.
She needed a companion, and who better than her neighbor and family friend Demetria? Demetria, 69, had moved to England decades ago and never been back to her home country.
The story is simply lovely. Anna and Demetria’s friendship is beautifully deepened by their shared experiences.
There are some emotional moments, some fun bantering, and the challenge of accepting a friend as they come. Sometimes grumpy, sometimes needing the restroom every few miles.
The road trip is a treat of its own, especially in times of COVID-19. The author describes the many places they pass through in an immersive way, without overdoing it.
There is a lot of food and scents. I confess I felt quite hungry throughout the reading. If you are going to read it in the park or on the beach, bring a snack!
The cherry of the cake is a little summer romance with an adorable, yet elusive, Irishman.
Some Like it Greek is the perfect summer read! Highly recommended!

Reading this was like taking a sunny vacation to Greece. Anna has had a rough few months. After finding some documents that are memoirs from her dad’s time in Greece, she decides to follow in his footsteps, grabs her Dad’s neighbor Demi, and takes off on an adventure. How fortunate for us that we get to go along with her. This book was pure escapism. I love this author’s writing style. It flows along, allowing the reader to be drawn into the story. Cozy tale of family, friends, feta and a little road romance

In the usual style of the Sue Roberts novels I’ve read, this story delivers a strong female lead who learns about herself while having a lovely time! It’s easy to read and, though it deals with some serious heartache, the general spirit is happy and positive.
Anna undertakes a driving journey from England to Greece, totally out of her comfort zone, to honor her recently-deceased father’s memory and find her own connection to the places he visited as a young man and never forgot. Anna is a generous soul and when she learns her traveling companion Demi’s sad story related to her move to England from Greece she becomes instrumental in resolving a fifty year mystery. Strangers well met along the way include a handsome vagabond Irishman who provides some romance and a sea glass jeweller who looks strangely familiar. Summer sun, tasty local delicacies and some beautiful sights throughout Europe lay the background for an enticing, leisurely read, whether at the beach or at home.
Thanks to publishers Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Poor Anna has had a bit of time of it lately. Her father passed away, she’s lost her job and now she has to try and sell their family home. All whilst dealing with her snippy, social climbing sister.
She finds hints at her fathers travelbug past and decides to follow his footsteps and try to unearth the details of a trip he made to Greece before marrying her mum. Enter the most unlikely travel buddies, Anna and OAP Demi. Demi hasn’t been back to Greece after a family mystery and she has decided now is the time to face them.
There are lots of strong female relationships of various types in the book, Anna and her bestie Roz, Anna and her sister Liz, and Anna and Demi. Lots of long-held secrets and tragedy’s to uncover along the way. The travelogue if brilliant with scenery and food descriptions. Having read this during COVID-19 lockdown and having my own holiday in Greece cancelled, this was just the injection of sunshine I needed.
Joel is a backstabbing asshat! The ex-boyfriend from hell. I really loved the way he was sidelined, he was never a major part of the book, just as he deserved! Dara is just the kind of romantic, mysterious, enigmatic stranger Anna needed. He injected a bit of passion in her life that she was sadly lacking and even though the whole money thing was bit over the top, I still enjoyed meeting him and his involvement in the plot.
Some Like it Greek by Sue Roberts was a lovely entertaining afternoon read.
Anna and Demi were both likable and relatable characters. The characters develop well throughout the story as their thoughts and history are revealed through Anna’s thoughts and Demi’s conversations with Anna.
The plot moves smoothly and the descriptive writing by Ms. Roberts made France, Switzerland, Italy and Greece come to life as they traveled along the roads in the campervan. With a touch of romance for Anna and a heartfelt family reunion for Demi, I quickly escaped from the real world for a few hours. In these times of “stay at home orders” I found this book to provide me with an “armchair travel experience” that I relished.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
I really wanted to love this book–it had an adorable cover, took place in Greece (where my parents used to live, and I’ve visited) and was premised on a young protagonist and quirky older neighbor roadtripping together. So much potential! But ultimately, so little happened in this book I hardly have anything to talk about. What did happened was presented in such a way that made it utterly boring. Anna decides to take a road trip from England to Greece with her 70-year-old neighbor to scatter her dad’s ashes in the place he loved vising as a young man. While on this journey, Anna meets a handsome traveler and her neighbor reconnects with family. There are no moments of excitement, intrigue, or romance in this book. The budding romance between Anna and the traveler (Dana) feels so forced, or at least unexplained, you wonder why they’re together at all, or, I guess, why it’s more than a vacation fling. Nothing in the novel makes me believe these two are destined for each other. I also find it incredibly implausible that Anna would go from a well-to-do corporate job to becoming a hairdresser. Not because that’s a bad career choice, but because it requires numerous steps of additional schooling, licensure, and training before she can make the transition. It would have made much more sense for her to pick up something with less transition steps, even within the creative field, like painting or photography. Everything else is incredibly predictable, presented either in long descriptive paragraphs that read more like a travel guide than a novel or incredibly stilted dialogue that feels too formal for actual speech. I would say the novel could benefit from MORE dialogue, instead of so much time of Anna by herself or alone with her thoughts , but I’m not sure that would make a difference. The book is also entirely lacking in humor. Sure, there are moments of amusement (like the 70-yo beating up some thieves), but nothing is really FUNNY in a way that makes me want to laugh. This book is entirely forgettable, but at least it was a quick read.
