Intergalactic steampunk?? Done cleverly,and excellently,RECOMMENDED!
Hands down one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! Gideon Quinn, a paroled convict is out to right some wrongs — very bad wrongs. He meets up with a young pickpocket who is trying to steal Gideon’s miniature dragon and things go crazy from there. Great plot, lots of twists, wonderfully wrought characters and excitement enough for anyone!
really fun book to read. enjoyed it a lot. only thing is it seems that book 2 deals with a different character. I might check into it but I really enjoyed the characters in this book. turns out the book 3 continues with the same characters. 🙂
This one was a bit slow for me at first. The action did pick up and the author did a great job working in twists and turns to the story. It did eventually all fall together in a interesting way. Gideon was a likable character and a perfect combo of bad ass and softie. Mia was a cute addition and I liked her cunning. The mix of characters did add to the story well. No cliffhanger but left open for next book.
An adventure of a lifetime. Well written. Great characters.
Reminded me of The Maltese Falcon.
A rollicking read! Strong characters, improbable confusion and hilarious solutions.
good book if you are into this kind of book genre.
Good read, fast paced & interesting story
I enjoyed the reading and didn’t have to wade through a lot of unnecessary and irrelevant filler. I liked the characters. I liked the author’s way with words and am looking forward to more from the planet Fortune.
Disliked the writing style
Like the characters. Will try the rest of the series.
I honestly could not put the book down. Very entertaining read.
This was a great read! From the first page, you’re drawn into a well-crafted and original world. Great characters and plot.
I liked the hero, who sacrificed his position and reputation to protect his troops, and accepted his defamation and punishment on their behalf. Developed a tough and cynical character, but still had his inborn decency deep inside. Accepted an assignment in exchange for freedom, and had to rise up to overcome some tough odds.
Held my interest throughout the book.
It was hard to read at the beginning but as I went on it got better.
A very good easy enough to read book. Nice plot twists, although the lead character does have a case of the invincibles, and it wraps up all nice and neat in a bow at the end. I like the way they move through the time frames of the characters.
Several times as I was reading “Soldier of Fortune,” I found myself checking how much of the book I had left. Not because I was bored or it was dragging, but because it was so entertaining I didn’t want it to end.
The characters in this somewhat futuristic, alternative-Earth tale are well-developed and interesting, the dialogue is clever and real. This is a page turner, but that cliche doesn’t do justice to the non-stop action and smarmy repartee involving the main characters. The plot is well thought out and isn’t predictable — expect a few surprises!
I’m particularly impressed by how the author handles the fight scenes — very specific details about how Gideon Quinn, the protagonist, goes about disarming or disabling his opponents.
The author has created an alternative universe, including an earth-like world where humankind has moved. She clearly put a lot of thought into how that world world work, including politics and economics.
My only quibbles are the occasional typo or misplaced word I found, and some of the names she chose for different territories/factions — I understand what she was doing but I found the names speed bumps in the storytelling — I stumbled occasionally when I hit them.
But these are very minor and overall don’t detract from a terrific story. I have already purchased the second book and look forward to the rest of the series.
I liked reading this sci-fi. I’m not Usually a scifi fan normally, but enjoyed this book!
