Set in the Great Depression this novel grapples with issues that go beyond poverty to the core of journalistic integrity and how the media can change lives. Should be required reading for journalism majors.
What an original plot line!!
gave a good example of media manipulation
The great depression is known by so many, but I had no idea something like this could possibly go on. The photographer wanting only to waste what was left of a role of film for his only passion, not a newspapers. Upon finding himself told his work was not what they wanted he looks again and finds the picture of children for sale he was not even aware he was taking. He goes back but the family is gone, so he stages a picture. What happens to his morals and future are what takes up the bulk of the narrative. Heart wrentching to know this went on, but also know what the dust bowl and depression did to not us but the entire world.
Can’t put it down
A well written story about the pull and importance of family. Two children sold by mistake cause unforeseen consequences. This story is set during the depression and clearly define how hardship can lead to choices that might not otherwise be made. Well drawn characters bring the story to life.
I liked the book and it there were unexpected moments in it. Fairly realistic.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Easy reading but a very good story.
It was a gripping story. I highly recommend it
A great and quick read, not so much about the great depression but about human nature, greed, and love.
Sold on a Monday was a great book to show some of the hard choices people had to make during the Great Depression. It provided a great example of the need for personal integrity, particularly the way that seemingly harmless cutting corners can lead to major complications. I enjoyed the characters and learning more about the culture of the 1930s in America.
Wonderful read. Hard to put down. You can empathize with the characters and can’t wait to see how it turns out.
The book is not for everyone but it was a great read.
chilling true life story – based on events but not historical
This is a book that will definitely make you think! From the actual tragedy of a family to consequences of actions all make you stop and think. Loved it!
Wow! This book is scandalous! Every chapter just grabs you more and more right up until the end. I could definitely see this being made into a movie one day. This book makes my top 10 favorite books of all time. The plot is unique, the characters are well developed, and the author describes everything perfectly so I can envision what is happening clearly in my head. Great job!
A young writer during the Depression takes a photo of a For Sale sign for two kids. He decides to do a story but when he returns the family is gone. The picture gets ruined in development so he goes back and pays another poor mom to let him take a picture of her kids and he uses it for his story even tho he knows it’s a lie. The story of what happens to those kids is what the story is about
This book has been on my to-be-read list since it was released. And my anticipation of being able to read it was rewarded with a wonderful well-written story. The cover alone will pull you in with a sense of mystery and intrigue.
Ellis and Lily are well developed characters and you will begin to care what happens in their lives. The author does a great job of sharing the lives and situations during the great depression. Your heart will ache with the tale of the two children “sold on a Monday.”
The story is a wonderful example of the repercussions of one person’s actions and the ripple effect. If you discovered a decision you made seriously affected the life of another individual, how far would you go to undo the damage you caused? Ellis has to make a decision between putting his career as a priority or be a man of high morals and integrity.
This book is at moments heartwrenching and have you biting your nails in fear the next. It is just a wonderful book and should be moved to the top of your to-be-read list.
Excellent!
Very well written. Makes you think
