The desperation people who lived through the Great Depression experienced is heart-rending. My parents lived through those times before I was born, and have told me some their stories. Happily they were able to make it without being pressed that hard, but many people were. This book helps you to see what can befall if life takes such a hard turn.
I didn’t want this story to end. I loved this book and just wanted it to be a series of some sort. I like this author very much now after reading this book.
This is one of my favorite books and I have given it as a gift to others.
A great read. How a twist of fate changed the lives of the people involved. It was also a glimpse into the time of the Great Depression and the lengths people would go to in order to survive.
I really enjoyed this book. It is reminiscent of the Orphan Train and I enjoyed reading the fiction side of what could have been.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Unpredictable and twists and turns along the way.
This book was well written and an eye opener concerning the former abuses of the foster care system.
I read this book straight through. I have become interested in the ‘Depression Orphans’ and this is one of the better historical fictions on the subject. It feels as though one is reading a current newspaper story and makes it seem factual.
Well Done!
The cover drew my eye and the blurb spoke to me. I wanted to read this story and I wasn’t disappointed. The author has a very easy-going style that doesn’t interfere with the story and the pages kept turning. I was as concerned about Calvin and Ruby as were Ellis and Lily. The characters are flawed and realistic, courageous and troubled, driven to correct a wrong. A beautifully written and very touching novel.
Life can be complex. It is not always easy to do the right thing. Being true to yourself and your values gives one peace and happiness in the long run.
Very interesting part of our history that had never occurred to me.
I loved this book! So moving especially when it comes to selling children. Oh the Depression!!!!
Very interesting. I loved this. The premise of putting your children up for sale so you and they will survive is heart rendering, but this book does a great job of isolating it with other characters.
What happened during the depression when a family could no longer feed their children? Sometimes they were forced to sell them so they could pay for food. This was a difficult time for many people and though this wasn’t a true story, the book notes that it did occur.
I loved it! This book is a good lesson in why you should never cheat on anything to further your career.
Sold on Monday is a harrowing tale inspired by true events where one small sign forever changes the lives of so many people. The author does an amazing job at giving life a newspaper picture advertising the sale of children, life full of dynamic characters that grab you by your heartstrings. From the first page to the last I was completely involved and obsessed with this story. I also highly commend the author for giving a positive ending to a picture that most likely in reality did not end well. I highly recommend this book you will come away with a new outlook on a troubling time in US history.
Reporter Ellis Reed stumbles upon 2 boys being offered for sale and snaps a picture. After discovering the picture, Lily Palmer shows it to their boss. That simple act causes a chain reaction that leads us through the story and the two of them each on a path of self discovery and bonds them together in a way they cannot ignore.
Very interesting story line. Characters well drawn. Would recommend.
Very good depression era very sad times
An interesting take on problems during the depression.
