Jay Cantrell will find his family…or die trying.
He had the perfect life as a small-town librarian: married just over a year to his second wife, an airline pilot, he also has a daughter in college studying to be an astrophysicist. He’s ready to celebrate the first year of his new marriage as he adjusts to an empty nest and a new stage in life.
But the sun had other plans and sent a coronal mass … plans and sent a coronal mass ejection as an anniversary present.
Awakened before dawn one morning in mid-December by northern lights that blanket the sky—in central Illinois—Jay’s world changes in the blink of an eye. Flying a planeload of passengers to Hawaii, his wife Kate experiences the CME in a whole other light and must fight to stay alive every step of the way. Leah, Jay’s daughter, witnesses the impact through the eyes of a student far from home.
Jay must decide to stay and wait for news of his wife or leave before things get worse to find his daughter. The problem is, with no electricity, he doesn’t know how bad it is…anywhere. Will he set out to rescue his daughter and make a harrowing journey through a post-apocalyptic wasteland only to find the power is still on, two states away?
In a world where electricity is a thing of the past, can there be any hope for the future? After all, it’s not a matter of if a CME will strike the earth, but when.

Hard to realize how fast we can become primitive when faced by adversity.
Not so much a “what if” but a “this will happen one day.” SciFi is really good at giving a person a sort of heads up warning about possible future scenarios.
A very good apocalyptic thriller, fast paced, action packed and good study of human interaction after a major EMP event. Great character study as the major characters evolve and begin to come to terms with their new reality.
I enjoyed the novel, the concept was intriguing and the characters engaging. I definitely recommend for those that are into apocalyptic stories.
This was a scenario that could happen; huge solar flare knocks out nearly everything electronic world-wide, and society quickly reverts to a chaotic and ruthless fight for survival. Dialogue wasn’t always believable, but the story itself, with the main characters trying to stay alive and find each other, was enough to carry me along.
I always enjoy books about the end of the world as we know it, and how we react to the loss of our comforts and conveniences. So in that aspect I enjoyed the book. But I would have liked it better if it wasn’t in a series.
This is a fun, fast-paced read. It will leave you waiting for the next installment!
Scary good!
Not what I expected. Fiction, but I can see this scenario becoming a reality. Scary what the future may hold.
I liked this book and am looking forward to the next installment.
Good presentation of what a CME strike could result in. Now need ti get book 2.
I’ll definitely be getting the next in this series!
really enjoyed this series
A very good read, great story
The Solar Storm series is a quick read and I’ve enjoyed the characters very much. Great villains, mostly believable action as civilization falls apart after a giant solar flare and ensuing damage to the world’s electrical grid. There were a few things that I wouldn’t have done, even as a suburban former girl scout, so those stood out when former military characters did them. But, overall, this has been a great series to close out 2020 with – I mean, it could be worse!
I’m a big believer in this scenario. The research notes at the end were informative, and I appreciated the attempt at describing how an event of global proportions can effect people on a very personal level. But I don’t think that this story was very well written. If this was supposed to be realistic, too many things went ‘right’ for this family and some of the science seems to have been completely ignored.
I liked the characters but was distracted by the typos and mistakes in the sentences.
It was ok
This book was frustrating. First (spoiler alert), the book ended without resolving any major plot events. I refuse to buy a second book when it ends in unresolved, cheap cliffhangers. That does not make a good book nor does it encourage me to buy the next one. Second, many of the choices the dad made were implausible to the point of ridiculous. I cared more about the wife and daughter because their characters were intelligent and resourceful. Some simple changes could have made this book very good. Better editing was needed.
boring, only read part of first chapter, then opened another sci-fi book.
