The third book in the Tales of Faeraven is just as surprising as the first two. Just when you think things are okay the story pulls you left and right. Janalyn Voigt has such a way of crafting a fantasy world while weaving scripture into the story and making it relatable as always. I wished there was mention of a time skip for this book. Unlike book two, this book takes place a few years after the events of book two. This also was a bit more confusing as point of views switched up more frequently.
This book is centered around Mara and the secret of her life. Mara was an interesting character. She was bold and sassy. She reminded me of her father and aunt combined. I loved how she went head first into things without really thinking things through. She handled everything pretty well. I can’t wait to see her do more as the heir of Faeraven.
Elcon is still a comical character! I enjoyed his interaction with each character. He definitely is fit for High King. He took care of his people and his family the best he knew how.
Emmerich is still the wise man! I LOVE him! I have since book one. I just love the guidance and wisdom he provides to each character. I appreciate that he disappeared for a while to allow the people to come to their senses. I’m curious as to his true plans however.
Kai is still the strong, protective and caring man that he was from book one. I’m glad I got some answers concerning his disappearance in book two. The things going on with Shae are a bit frightening. I hope that gets solved.
Arillia was a bit annoying to me with her insecurities. She allowed Aewen get to her and ruin the better part of her marriage. I feel like she needed to grow up and move forward instead of being stuck in the past.
Rand was an interesting addition to this series. I enjoyed him and how different he was from his father. He definitely was kind hearted. I loved seeing him stand up against his father.
Freaer, as usual, is twisted and annoying. I seriously cannot stand him and hope he goes by the end of book four.
Overall, great addition to the series! Excited for DawnKing which is book four.
This is the third novel in the Fairaven series and this story takes us further into this fantasy world, with an air of anticipation for the next in the series.
This story takes place 18 years later with two characters that are searching for belonging and acceptance. I would definitely classify this as a coming of age story.
Mara is a simple commoner, or so she thinks, until she finds out some startling truths about her past. Searching for her place in this world with this new truth sends her on a path of her new destiny.
Rand is a character that is running away from the demons of his past that are still intent on destroying him and all he holds dear. These two start off on an adventure that will bring them to truths that they did not know of.
I was happy to be back in this world. I enjoyed the continuation of this story and I think this one just might be my favorite as many loose ends of the previous story are tied up. The story arc is one that is keeping me glued to the pages and looking forward to the next in the series.
I was provided with a copy of the book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Set a few years after, this one was slightly different, and took a few chapters before I was sure I could follow the story, but just with the other two, I quickly found I wanted to know more and couldn’t wait find out what happens! I was pleased with how this one turned out, and enjoyed seeing some of the secrets and things that weren’t covered but were hinted at, or missing in the first two books. This one really helps add some background on a few things, and I loved seeing the different POVs used to tell this story!
*I received a copy from the author as part of the Prism Blog Tour. This does not affect my review.*

Sojourner
Tales of Faeraven
By: Janalyn Voigt
*REVIEW*
Sojourner is the third book in the Faeraven Series, and it begins approximately sixteen years after the end of Wayfarer. That’s a big time jump for a continuous story, and I wondered what changes would be in store. A couple of new characters are introduced, and I liked the fact that they interjected a bit of new life into the story. Obviously, some world building aspects were slightly different because things do change over time; however, the unique and descriptive settings that have been present throughout the series were still just as vivid and detailed. The plot felt a little slower than the previous books, but this remains a well written, inventive, entertaining and complex read with dynamic unforgettable characters and an underlying current of faith. I’m interested to see where things are going next. Janalyn Voigt has written a great addition to the series and I recommend for anyone who has enjoyed the books!
This was my favorite book of the series so far. I found it easier to read and not as confusing as the previous books. This may be because there is less movement to different locations. This book seemed to be more about character development and the stress of creating a family.
Mara was thought to be dead by her father, High King Elcon. He mourned the loss of his wife and daughter for years until she was found and brought back to him. At this point, she had been raised by a mother and father and forged relationships. It was a struggle to make a relationship with a man who was her father and a stranger at the same time.
While this story was progressing another family story was developing. This one was Rand’s family. His father is Freaer, the usurper who wants to take the throne from Elcon. Rand is illegitimate, making his story a tough one to read. He is basically a good guy who is in a bad situation.
I loved the interaction of the characters and the weaving in of the past, present, and future that is to come. This is story of finding love, hope, friendship, and honor in a time of war.
I am looking forward to the next installment!

Book three in Janalyn Voigt’s Tales of Faeraven takes place eighteen years after the previous book ends. Elcon and the others at Torindan have grown complacent during their time of peace, so they are unprepared when their enemy rebuilds his forces.
Readers meet a couple new characters. Mara and Rand are young and trying to find where they belong and make the right decisions for their lives. Many of the previous characters return as well. And some questions that were left at the end of Wayfarer are answered but more are presented.
Sojourner ends with a little more of a cliffhanger than the first two books, but my guess is Voigt is gearing readers up for something epic in the next installment. As this series continues, I become more invested in these characters and Voigt’s story world. And I really want Kai and Shae to get their HEA!
