Time is running out for Miss Elizabeth Elliot. She must find a husband soon, for her father’s plan of retrenchment — and his health — are failing. She is left to choose between Sir Henry, a worn out man of fashion whose invalid wife is not quite dead, and wealthy, tiresome Mr. Rushworth. But when a wondrous invitation arrives, Elizabeth throws caution to the wind. Alone in a moonlight garden, she … a moonlight garden, she encounters Admiral Patrick McGillvary, who is as disastrously handsome as he is opinionated.
As Elizabeth will discover, the course of love is anything but smooth.
Jane Austen’s beloved Persuasion provides the backdrop for this delightful romp set in Regency England.
Mercy’s Embrace is a novel in three parts:
* Book One: So Rough a Course
* Book Two: So Lively a Chase
* Book Three: The Lady Must Decide
If you enjoy smart, sparkling Regency romance in the classic “Heyeresque” style, then you will love Laura Hile’s Mercy’s Embrace.

I was hooked long before the end of the first chapter. Ms. Hile has a delightful ability to keep you in Regency England while showing that human nature is still human nature, regardless of century, and therefore, make the reader nod when people behave in stunningly familiar ways.

I always wondered what would become of Elizabeth Elliot after her sister, Anne, married Wentworth in “Persuasion”. Would she turn into a spinster constantly holding up the snobbery and vanity of her father, Sir Walter Elliot? Or would she ‘see the light’ and fight to find her own happily-ever-after? I must say Ms. Hile has certainly given me the latter in this intriguing journey that Elizabeth has set for herself.
Elizabeth Elliot is beautiful, headstrong, determined and a touch impulsive, slightly desperate, in her pursuit of getting married before her thirtieth birthday, which is not far off. Her father is of no help and very evasive. Their financial situation seems to be getting worse, and she is unable to glean any information from him. Her sister, Anne, is of no help either, now that she is marrying her “opinionated, self-assured and brash” Captain. So Elizabeth decides to take the bull by it’s horns and find herself a husband.
“Elizabeth had never allowed Romance to have a place in her life.” (quote from the book)
Along the way, she starts learning some very hard truths. Along the way, she is pursued by some very unique suitors. How she handles herself and her suitors left me either laughing, snickering or slightly worried. We know who she should marry, but even he has made a muddle of things. Oh, and one of the fun elements of this book is that Miss Bingley is a ‘friend’! Yes, there were some delightful crossover of characters in this tale. The journey is far from over as this is only Book 1 with two more to go!
I liked it.
I understood the reason of breaking the book into three parts. I just hate to be forced to wait to read a whole story. By the time the next part is available, I have forgotten about the original part.
I really look forward to reading more books by this author!
Suffered through 2 chapters that made no sense and then stopped reading it.
If you read this as as stand-alone, and not a “sequel” to Austen, it’s not bad. Elizabeth’s character is not consistent with Austen’s depiction, although the author does toss off a few nods that way. However, taken as an independent story, Elizabeth starts as an rather snobbish, narrow-minded sort, and the gradual shifting is believable. And she does have at least a reasonable sense of accurate behavior for the time.
I enjoyed it enough to get the next book, which for me is a recommendation.
This was a very cute and funny story. Although there was danger also involved. Good read.
What a wonderful book! Original, great characters, a page turner for sure!
This is an entertaining story, however, it is not a complete book. It abruptly ends with the story unfinished, and you must buy the next “book” to continue.
I enjoyed reading this book till the end …There isn’t one it is one of those books that you have to get the next one and i’m going to assume the next one to see what happens . I like to have a finish on the books I read .So if you like a book that doesn’t finish this ones for you . But if you want to know the end when you finish a book do not get this ne .
I had trouble empathizing with the main character then the book ended before there was any plot resolution! Very disappointing.
Like other reviewers, be warned that this is one third of a book, not the full novel. Author writes competently, but requires an editor to rid her of Americanisms among other things. The religious overtones she inserts are mawkish and out of place.
I hate books with unfinished endings…..Would have given it 4 stars if it did not leave me hanging at the end.
The world of Jane Austen’s Persuasion fairly sparkles under Laura Hile’s deft and humorous touch. While Elizabeth Elliot retains the abrasive edges of Austen’s original, you’ll be as delighted as I was to see her develop into a woman deserving of a good man’s love.
Warning: This book is a cliff hanger with No ending! Apparently, you must read 2 more books to find out what happens to Elizabeth Elliot and whether she will marry Patrick Gill. I am interested in Elizabeth and her long drawn out marriage problem, but I am not willing to read 1,000 pages total to find out.
