This is the second book in The Embraced series and it does not disappoint. The story revolves around Brigitta who’s gift is finding lost things, whether it be items or memories. While on her way to visit her convent sister Luciana, she is kidnapped by the infamous pirate Rupert. Rupert is on a path of revenge for his murdered family and Brigitta is a means to an end. Neither Rupert nor Brigitta expected to have sparks fly whenever they are together and Brigitta is shocked by the memories she uncovers when Rupert touches her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and loved how the romance between Rupert and Brigitta developed. Sister Fallon is a nice addition to the story. The poor nun is forever terrified that both she and Brigitta will be ravished by the sailors on the pirate ship. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book and the plot flows along nicely. The world has been established in the first book, but more details emerge in this story. I’m anxiously awaiting the 3rd book in the series. Fans of romance and fantasy will definitely enjoy this book.
I enjoyed this one even more than I did the first book in the series! Fantasy and romance and pirates?!?! Sign me up! It had a real The Princess Bride vibe at times and I adore that movie! And intentional or not, every time I saw “As You Wish” I thought of the ever charming Westley. I loved both Rupert and Brigitta so much and they were so great together. I also absolutely love Brody and I want him to be a big part of every single book. I also loved just how much the first book came into play here. It can definitely stand alone but the reader benefits having read the first book. What I’m really loving about these books is that they seem to be low on the angst. There is a ton of action and drama but they’re also just really sweet and I love that. All in all, I devoured this book and can’t wait for more.
So I Married A Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks
The Embraced #2
Five sisters of the heart raised on an island in a convent will have their stories told through this series. The world building of Aetherlan is superb with five kingdoms in need of…something. The prologue tells enough to set the stage and then…a story begins.
In the first book Luciana finds her future in Eberon with Leo and as book two begins the four other sisters of the heart are on their way by sea to be there when Luciana has her first child. Brigitta is taken captive by a pirate and believes her future, as foretold by the fortune telling stones, is just beginning – BUT – who is the tall handsome stranger that was predicted?
With dragons, shapeshifters, “embraced” with unexpected talents, an evil stepbrother, murder to be avenged, a contest for the hand of fair maiden and a whole lot more this is an action-packed fast-paced book with adventure, romance and a happily ever after ending that makes me want to find out what will happen in the rest of the books of the series. It will be difficult to wait for book three that is not expected to be released till sometime in 2018.
I liked this book but for some reason the first book seemed a bit more mature while this one a bit lighter hearted or perhaps not as deep and for that reason I bumped it down a bit in stars in comparison.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Series: The Embraced, #2
Release Date: August 29, 2017
4.5 stars
Another exciting and entertaining tale in the Embraced series! This story picks up shortly after the end of the previous book (How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days). Brigitta and remaining “sisters” have left the Isle of Moon and are traveling to visit their sister Luciana and her husband Leo. Brigitta and her “sisters” are all embraced and each have been abandoned on the Isle of Moon by their families – the embraced are feared by the people of Aerthlon, if exposed it would mean certain death. But now that Luciana and Leo are ruling the kingdom of Eberon and are both embraced, their home is a safe haven. However, fate has other plans for Brigitta, who like all the other girls has no knowledge of her life/family before coming to the Isle of Moon. On the way to Eberon, Brigitta learns the truth of her past – she is Princess Brigitta, her half-brother Gunther is King of Tourin and he wants her back.
During the standoff with the Tourinian Navy, the pirate Rupert swoops in and kidnaps Brigitta, he has a vendetta against her brother and will not rest until he sees him destroyed – he plans to hold Brigitta for ransom. But when they meet and she touches him, Brigitta is overcome and faints – Brigitta’s gift is the ability to find lost/hidden items and this includes memories, so when she touched Rupert, she was overwhelmed by grief, pain and loss. She is determined to learn Rupert’s secrets and when she does, she wants to right the wrongs of the past.
Rupert is also embraced and he has the power to control the wind. His sole mission in life is to avenge his family and destroy King Gunther. Rupert’s father was King of Tourin and Gunther’s father proposed an alliance between the families, Prince Ulfric would be betrothed to Brigitta. On the way home from the ceremony, Rupert’s father was ambushed and killed, troops were then sent to his home to kill his mother and younger brother. Rupert was saved by a family retainer and has spent the last 19 years plotting his revenge. Brigitta is a dilemma he doesn’t need, but when he learns her brother’s true plans for her, he cannot return her to him.
Gunther needs an heir, so he has concocted a plan, he will host a completion and the winner will get to father his heir – that is why he needs Brigitta. And that is exactly why Rupert doesn’t want to turn her over to him.
Everything starts to fall into place for Brigitta, who Rupert is, what her family has done and what she has to do to make it right. She tells Rupert that she will help him regain his throne, she convinces him to return her to Gunther and enter the competition himself. Although he doesn’t want to have Brigitta anywhere near Gunther, he realizes that her plan has merit and when Leo and Luciana agree to help, it seems like Rupert might finally see his plan succeed.
This book is brimming with action, adventure, pirates, shifters, magic, dragons and secrets. It is well written, flows perfectly, it has some steamy love scenes, excellent secondary characters (Sister Fallyn – OMG – She is priceless!), cameos from Luciana and Leo, nail biting moments and finally a very well deserved HEA.
It is the second book in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title. The only reason I gave this book 4.5 stars instead of 5 is because it is billed as a Historical Paranormal/Fantasy Romance, but the dialogue is definitely not historical, but in all honesty, it didn’t really diminish my enjoyment of the story.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
I never knew I missed reading this genre until I stumbled upon this series. It’s been years since I had read anything in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, and I’ve been missing out!
it’s not going to take you very long to fall in love with Brigitta and Rupert, as well as a lot of of the supportive friend and family that they have and making along the way. Their adventure is uniquely their own, but ties in to this whole series, which follow the 5 (Embraced) sisters from the Isle of Moon.
The world building is phenomenal, and the description of the characters, situation, environment meant and interactions make for a great page turner that I simply could not put down.
You will be rooting for the good guys and cursing the bad guys, while being taken on this magical ride and wanting more! Kerrelyn Sparks cannot write the rest of the series fast enough!
I was nervous to start this book because I loved the first one was concerned this one wasn’t going to hold up. Well, it did. This was such a good book filled with pirates, sorcerer’s, kidnapping, dragons, and a battle against an evil king.
I loved Rupert and Brigitta slow building relationship and the trials they faced. I love that they were able to right the wrongs of the past and hopefully they can rebuild a struggling kingdom.
I can’t wait to read the next one but, again, I am nervous about it because I really hope it holds up to these two.
An amazing addition to an amazing series! Briggita and Rupert were great characters with great chemistry. It was not always sunshine and roses or easy and I loved that. But they both stuck with it and believed in each other, their HEA is most definitely earned. I cannot wait to read more changes these embraced sisters bring to the world.
A very nice blend of romance, likeable characters, danger with a dash of magic. Normally I am not a big fan of fantasy, however when written with Kerrelynn Sparks’ talent it is a joy to read. We were introduced to the five adopted sisters in the first novel in this series. All were born while their world’s two moons eclipse. Children born during this time are embraced, in other words, they are given gifts/powers. These five were sheltered on the Isle of the Moon for their protection. The time has come for them to one by one meet their intended mates. This is Brigitta and Rupert’s story and what a story. It is fast paced, holding the reader’s attention from beginning to end. I already have the next in the series loaded, can’t wait to read it. Love these characters and this storyline.
“Don’t you know when you are being ravaged?” Oh, my so much fun with pirates! I will read it again! Can’t wait for the next book! It was interesting, well-crafted, hilarious, and at times heartbreaking.
This is the 2nd in The Embraced series and it’s best read after the 1st.
Brief summary
In this book, Rupert the pirate, is actually a prince determined to win back his throne by honorable means. Kind of. Brigitta is one of the young ladies that grew up on the Isle of Moon. She, like her adopted sisters wields a special power, and figures out that she is the Lost Princess of a sea side nation called Tourin. When traveling to meet with her sister who is the heroine in the previous novel (The first book in the series “How to tame a beast in seven days”), their boat is set up on by Pirates, and the princess is taken hostage.
* Disclosure: I was given an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. (Although I purchased a signed print version of this book once it was published for my bookcase.)
Super Fun Read! One of my absolute favorites.
I loved this book so much I went out and bought the first book in the series. Not that book two didn’t stand on it’s own. It did, splendidly. But all the secondary characters were so interesting and the hint of their own stories so intriguing that I just had to read more. You can be sure I’ll get each of the following stories as soon as they are available.
Brigitta grew up on the Island of Mann. Luckily she had her sisters. Not sisters of blood, but of the heart. They, like herself were left or abandoned at the island’s convent as babes. As the sisters are sailing to visit with their other sister, Luciana their ship is attacked. To keep her sisters safe, Brigitta agrees to go with the Notorious Pirate Rupert. Bringing along her trusty sidekick and chaperone, Sister Fallyn. Who will make sure Brigitta’s virtue is preserved while keeping us in stitches. Lord, or should I say Goddesses, that woman is hilarious.
Rupert, or The Notorious Pirate Rupert as he’s called by most, or Horrid Rupert as he’s called by Brigitta, and The Dread Pirate Rupert as I can’t help but call him. This book has that fun quality of The Princess Bride so every time I read Pirate Rupert, I hear The Dread Pirate Rupert. Luckily it doesn’t distract from the book.
Rupert has kidnapped Princess Brigitta to get revenge against her brother, the Turian king. Yep, she’s a princess. Who knew? Not Brigitta, but Rupert and her brother, King Gunther did. It seems now she’s to be a pawn in their ongoing battle, where Rupert steals from the Turian King, then the king throws a tantrum.
This story has lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing. The world building is excellent, the story is well thought out and seamlessly woven with a balanced mixture of tension, humor, and romance. I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading this book. It’s one that I will go back to over and over in order to visit with the fun yet complex characters in Kerrelyn Sparks world of the embraced.
I give this book my highest rating, “Bookshelf Space”. If you like The Princess Bride you will definitely want to get a copy of this book. Also if you like paranormal romance, fantasy, or you just like a really good read. This one has it all.
**Bookshelf space = I’ll give the book one of the coveted yet limited spots in my bookshelves.
I love Kerrelyn’s books. This is the second book in this series. She has created a unique world and I can’t wait for the next installment.
This is the second novel in the Embraced series and I highly recommend reading this after reading the first novel, How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days. Kerrelyn Sparks has done a wonderful job creating the world and the back story of each character that you immediately feel as if the world is real. This entry features Brigatta who was left as an infant on the Isle of Moons. Brigatta grew up thinking she was an orphan when in truth she was a Princess that had been used to destroy another royal family. So when she is kidnapped by the infamous pirate Rupert she doesn’t know which fate is worse, kidnapped by a pirate or returned to her murdering brother who only wants her for the heir that she can provide.
This paranormal romance had a bit everything – suspense, romance, action and a bit of humor. I’m definitely looking forward to the next in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
After reading and loving the first book of the series I was excited for this next installment and it didn’t disappoint. Sparks truly knows how to bring incredible characters and fascinating places to life. In a world where it doesn’t always pay to be different you’ll root for the heroine and hope she wins in the end. Filled with laughter, tears, and love; immerse yourself in a tale of a pirate looking for revenge but finding an everlasting treasure in the end.
I received an ARC of this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
So I Married a Sorcerer is the second book in The Embrace series by Kerrelyn Sparks.
We are treated to a love story that takes place on the high seas and a bit on dry land. Theirs secrets, drama, past wrongs that need writing, action, and romance.
Rupert, my heart broke for him and everything he has been through. Brigitta, is scared of her fate and knows it’s coming for her. These two where perfect for each other.
The romance starts out as a pirate romance, but turns into our heroine battling for the man she loves, but also for what is right. It’s sweet and passionate. I enjoyed Rupert and Brigitta together and how well they complemented each other. We see how a past changes a person, but also how beautiful life can be when you find something worth keeping and fighting for. We are also treated to a little side romance better Stefan and Sister Fallyn. I loved this romance as well.
I will say I figured out who Rupert was at the very beginning, but it didn’t upset me that I knew.
Expect plenty of adventure, passion, and danger plus we get to go into dragon territory and get a sneak peak at who fate will match next.
