When Ruth Turner walks into the Sheriff’s office in Jefferson County’s Port Townsend claiming her sister Ida Wheaton has been missing for over a month, Detective Megan Carpenter’s instincts tell her that she needs to do more than just file a report.
Racing over to Ida’s secluded farmhouse in the hills above Snow Creek, Megan finds Ida’s teenage children alone and frightened. She can’t help but notice there’s no TV. No video games. Nothing of the outside world. Something about the Wheaton family doesn’t add up and triggers a painful childhood memory for Megan – when one day, in a flash, both her parents were gone.
Then the body of a woman is discovered in an abandoned pickup truck close to the Wheatons’ home and Megan’s convinced the cases are connected.
If she has any chance of catching the killer, Megan must first unravel the secrets of the isolated Snow Creek community. But Megan has dark secrets of her own…
Hidden in the back of her closet is a box of tapes containing every single recording of her therapy sessions over thirteen years ago. Can she finally confront the past she’s spent years trying to block out? And will reliving her own painful story help her solve the complex case unravelling in the hills above Snow Creek before another innocent life is lost?

A fantastic opening book in Gregg Olsen’s new crime series. The reader is introduced to a well-crafted, cleverly enigmatic character, Detective Megan Carpenter. The plot weaves through dynamic narrative shifts and intriguing subplots. Olsen delivers just the right amount contextual information on his new character to keep the reader eagerly engaged and yet omits just enough for future narratives to expound upon. Readers are wise to keep this in mind as they will not find a neat and tidy conclusion in book one. The story yields all the trepidation one is to expect from Olsen’s writing while furnishing all the emotional engagement. A must read! 5 stars.
Thank you to #NetGalley and @Bookouture for this ARC of #SnowCreek. It was read and reviewed voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Tarrah Marie (@wayward_readers)
Thank you NetGalley for the copy of Snow Creek by Gregg Olsen that I read and reviewed.
This is the first book in a new series by Gregg Olsen and if it is any indication of what we have to look forward to with this series I can’t wait to read more. I loved Megan Carpenter, the lead character, and all the questions that surround her past. There is so much more to learn about her that I can’t wait for the next book to come out and Olsen set it up perfectly for the reader to want more.
As for this book it was a great introduction to this series with a great story that I could not put down. This is definitely an excellent mystery that some of it I had figured out and some of it was like just crazy I did not even think of.
Snow Creek gets five out of five stars.
Didn’t finish it.
The narrator is terrible. Half the time I couldn’t understand who was who. It may have been a decent a decent story but the narrator ruined it. I wish authors would take the time to choose narrators that could make the book come alive
I did not like this book. The main character is interesting and the scenario starts out to be interesting, but the twisted nature of several characters seemed unnecessary to me.
Very disappointed
After reading the 1st couple of chapters, I wasn’t quite sure where it was going. There were several different story lines going on and the connection hadn’t been made yet. After getting through more of the book, I realized that a few of the story lines were just for setting, location, and character development.
With that being said, once I got into it … I have to say I enjoyed it. Not a wow factor but definitely a series I will continue to read. I look forward to seeing how Megan develops and learning more about her past and how it will impact her future.
3.5/5
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
What a fantastic start to a the new series Detective Megan Carpenter.
It’s dark, its compelling, you will cringe and you will turn the pages quickly.
Megan herself has a very troubling background that you only start to discover as she listens to her tapes from her psychiatrist.
Twists and turns; pay attention or you will miss them approaching.
Great read !
Can’t wait to see what Megan does next !!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to meet Megan Carpenter !!
