Lady Charlotte Lumley knows that she can never aspire to have a normal life, like any other lady in her position would. Many years ago, an accident on a rainy day, had put an end to any chance of her becoming a bride. Charlotte has resigned herself to an inevitable fate – she became a social recluse, who even her parents never speak of, because of the affliction that torments her; a ghost … daughter, who must stay hidden away. But when she meets the kind and handsome Marquess, her heart flutters for the first time! Can she let go of her secret and believe that love is on the cards for her too?
Sebastian, the Marquess of Wharton, has no desire to marry. The vapid society ladies that his mother insists on throwing on his path do not interest him at all. All that changes when he suddenly meets a beautiful lady on a crowded street, and he is forced to reconsider his perspective. Despite all his mother’s efforts, Sebastian is smitten with the mysterious Charlotte and cannot stop thinking about her. Will he be able to discover her well-kept secret and convince her that she is the one who owns his heart?
Even though they were instantly attracted to each other, each one repelled those thoughts for their own reasons. Nonetheless, avoiding that powerful chemistry cannot last long. Can Charlotte ever hope to let go of her painful past, and learn to embrace life, and a chance of true love? Will Sebastian be able to break free of society’s norms and follow his heart?

This is a pleasant enough story, and I admit that I wanted to find out how the characters worked things out. This is the third book I have read by this author and the best so far. However, I do not think I will be seeking out any other books.
I really was amazed at the poignant subject matter between the H and h. The author Bridget Barton has infused compassion, family loyalty and love into a subject that is relevant today as it was back then. The h Charlotte was dealing with the onset of a chronic condition that was given a dire diagnosis. The story describes how she felt, how she dealt with it, how her siblings were supportive and protective of her. Charlotte has an inner strength that was now coming to the surface. She decided to live each day to the fullest and look forward to a life of a spinster. She decided never to wed because of her affliction as she did not want to be a burden to a spouse. But fate had other plans. Charlotte met Sebastian when they collided into each other while shopping. Sebastian could not forget the lovely Charlotte. At every turn when they would run into each other any outsider could see the growing affection between them. Charlotte keeps denying her desires to be with Sebastian because of her affliction but he is relentless in his pursuit of her. But in the wings, someone was watching and felt threatened by Charlotte for Sebastian’s hand in marriage. Who knew how far this person would go to destroy their relationship? An excellent read. Very moving. I do recommend it.
Bridget Barton is the Grand Mistress of historical Regency Period romance. That’s clearly demonstrated by her latest, Smitten with an Ethereal Lady. The heroine here, Lady Charlotte Lumley suffers from what would now be labeled PTSD (though that’s not even remotely a concept known back then) thanks to a bad accident on horseback during a lighting storm. How she deals with this, and how the hero of this tale, Lord Sebastian (a Marquis, though it’s a courtesy title given to him as heir to a Duchy) overcome something that works be totally invalidating anyone in society back then, makes for an incredibly nice romantic tale. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
A wonderful plot, well written and with enjoyable characters that will kept reading until the last page.
