You can’t put the brakes on love… Ronnie Ashford needs a distraction. In the morning, she has to offer arrogant, conventional Jack Crews a job and convince him not to take it. She doesn’t need anyone’s help, thank you very much. But tonight is all about the tall, sexy stranger who just walked in the bar–and all the delicious trouble they could get into together. Too bad just as things are … things are heating up between them, he whispers the three little words that destroy everything: “I’m Jack Crews.”
Jack is determined to connect with fiery Ronnie–in bed and out of it–but her terms are clear. If he takes the job, helping her acquire prized artifacts for her mysterious bosses, anything between them is strictly off-limits. Somehow he has to convince a woman who’s never felt like she belonged that she’s found her place–with him. And with the danger sparking hotter than the fire between them, it’s going to be one unforgettable trip…

have read others by this author and this didn’t seem up to her usual level. Struggled and finally gave up.
Purchased the balance of the series …
Loved it!
4 . Another great book by Lori Foster, one of my favorite authors.
03/23/2020 Just finished reading this book for the second time and enjoyed it more because I’m reading the series from start to finish.
Loretta – it was almost the same storyline as Brody & Mary. I hope Charlotte fares better. Good story, good characters, and always well written.
After reading the blurb and seeing it was by one of my favourite authors, I was looking forward to reading Slow Ride. But I REALLY didn’t like the female lead. Nor anybody else except Jack. Then when I learned the type of things Ronnie obtained for her bosses, that was the end of it for me. I just couldn’t read anymore. But the average rating for this book is 4 stars so clearly many people liked it. Just not me.
I LOVED this book so much. The characters are great. Love Jack’s whole family. This was the second book in this series and I loved them both. I enjoyed both Brodie and Jack. Can’t wait for the next book.
family is full of Love, humor and protecting the ladies. And of course the dog Howler and now little Peanut and Buster. Great read…
Slow Ride in the second book in Lori Foster’s Road to Love series, but it’s the first novel I’ve read in the series, and it worked just fine for this reader as a standalone. It was certainly a well-written and entertaining novel of romantic suspense, but I did have a bit of a disconnect with the ending, and for that reason, I’m giving it a 4.5 star rating.
We meet the heroine, Ronnie Ashford, in the opening sentence of this novel and she’s quite different from every fictional heroine I’ve ever read about–she’s tought, she’s hard as nails, a total badass, and prickly as all get-out, and any attractive and petite woman who walks into a small town Ohio honky-tonk alone, looking for a one-night stand certainly is a risk-taker, and she’s a risk-taker in spades.
Ronnie, we learn, has been on her own for some time, and when she needs a distraction, a one-night stand, which she controls, is what she uses to scratch that itch. She’s not there at the bar long before a major distraction comes through the door, a total hunk, and she thinks he’ll scratch her itch just fine, but after a coy flirtation at the bar, they’re both feeling the sizzle between them, and agree to a one-night stand, but before they leave the bar, someone he knows mentions his name, Jack. It turns out that Ronnie is in town to meet meet with someone she may soon be working with. and that someone is Jack Crews.
Ronnie works alone as an acquisitions agent and prefers it that way, working exclusively for two rather macabre twin brothers who collect both exotic and downright weird oddities, and since they seem to rarely leave their home, Ronnie picks up their latest finds, but they now want her to have a man go with her on these assignment. When Ronnie gets to Mustang Transport, she again meets Jack, and since she prefers working alone, and doesn’t want a man coming along, she tells him that if he refuses the job offer from the twin brothers, she’ll have sex with him, but since he’s intrigued and as sexually attracted to this tiny brash and snarky woman as she is to him, he wants the job and accepts her terms, but that doesn’t mean he’ll stop trying to get her into bed.
Ronnie has not had an easy home life. When her mother accuses her father of infidelity and he denies it, her mother blurts that she had a fling, and Ronnie isn’t his child. After that her loving father wanted nothing to do with her, and after running away with just the clothes on her back, she is kidnapped while sleeping in her car with the windows rolled down. She manages to escape, he abductor is now in jail, but that doesn’t make the memories of her terrifying ordeal go away–she suffers from nightmares and flashbacks and as a result, she trusts no one but herself, feels unloved, unattractive and unwanted by her family. She never lets anyone gets too close to her, but that’s all Jack wants to do, not to just get close physically, but because he is both kind and caring, he wants to know all the ugly secrets that Ronnie hides from everyone, believing that all attachments to people do is hurt and disappoint you in the end.
As Jack and Ronnie start working together, things get more than a little weird. Ronnie is convinced someone is watching her, and as the two are sent out on several pick-up assignments, there’s something hinky with each and every one, and they’re getting creepier all the time. After several incidents, each one scarier than the next, the suspense ramps up into high gear, because Ms. Foster also lets us into the mind of whoever is stalking Ronnie, and he’s seriously both creepy and deadly. But who is he? Why is he after her? Better yet, who is after her? Although we read this criminals thoughts, and we even learn his name, but what’s the connection to Ronnie? While I had my suspicions, I was wrong, and and because I believed that a different person was toying with her and wanted to get his hands on her, I found that the arrest and capture of this person near the end of this novel although suspenseful, turned out to be rather unsatisfying, and I’d have much preferred the bad guy to be the person all the signs were to pointing throughout the novel.
I did love the heat Ronnie and jack generated with their explosive sexual chemistry, and I loved how Jack treated her, in bed and out. I also loved that these characters were animal lovers and animal rescuers, and Mustang Transport were kept quite busy picking up sad, beaten down, and abused animals and turning them over to an agency who placed them in loving homes. Their attitudes about animal abuse resonated strongly with me, as did their love and care for a couple of the animals they rescued and kept, which were also a heartwarming part of this novel.
So, over-the-top hotness, kindness to animals, love and care of family relationships, healing from trauma, a long slow ride for Ronnie, the increasingly bizarre and dangerous assignments and the slow ride toward Ronnie leaving some he issues behind, all made for a very good, very hot, and very emotional read. I recommend it.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
A sweet and steamy read! Girl with tragic and non-supportive life meets guy with supportive family that has weathered difficult times intact.
As a fan of anything by Lori Foster, I was super excited to get this second book in her new Road to Love series. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy for my opinion on this addition: Slow Ride.
I knew this story was going to be good when I was smiling and laughing out loud in the first chapter. We are introduced to “Ron/Ronnie/Veronica” out looking for a good time before having to deal with business the next day. Little does she know, the super hot guy that catches her eye, is the pain in the ass addition to the new dynamic duo her peculiar bosses have chosen for her. Cue lonely, cranky Ronnie.
I loved getting to interact more with Brodie and his adorably huge pup, but his brother Jack, Mr. Hottie from the night before, is Ronnie’s new partner in crime. I really liked the juxtaposition of seeing Jack all dressed for business, slightly casual, but ready to get down and dirty when necessary.
I really felt like not only had Ronnie found her match in Jack, but also her forever. While it is fun watching them spar and see those sparks fly, there are some really poignant, sweet moments between the two that melted my heart. Jack really resonated as that all around good guy who is there to protect his woman, but also respects her enough to let her run the show and be strong and independent.
I highly recommended Lori Foster’s second book in the Road to Love series: Slow Ride. It may be a “slow ride” between Ronnie and Jack but it sure is a hot one! Loved it!
I absolutely loved this book! Lori Foster has a way of taking big, hunky, badass characters and shows their sensitive side when they fall for the heroine. I love that she also makes the heroine strong, fierce, and independent. In this book Ronnie (aka Ron, aka Veronica) is strong and independent. Sparks fly from the very beginning and don’t let up throughout the entire book! It keeps you engaged through the end and makes you impatient for more! I’m looking forward to Charlotte’s story with Mitch!
5 Stars!
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, suspense, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below, they are also part of this series so if you want to read the entire series try reading those books(s) first
Driven to Distraction (Road to Love #1)
This is Ronnie and Jack’s story. Ronnie’s bosses want to hire Jack and have sent Ronnie to get him to sign the contract. There have been weird things happening an they want to protect her and the items they are acquiring. When Ronnie first gets to town, she sees Jack and does not know who he is they almost leave the bar together until she finds out just who he is. She is fuming. She does not want him to take the job. She can handle anything that comes her way. Jack wants her and is determined to have her. When they work together Jack can see that danger is following her, but can he convince her that he wants to help and is willing to help her no matter what? When the danger gets closer, they must decide if she is better off staying with Jack. Can she handle him taking over? What happens when she starts falling? Will she still be able to walk away in the end? Or will the danger make sure she has no choice but to walk away.
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.
“I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy”. I love Jack and Ronnie and the suspense of Jack winning over her heart and finally breaking through her thick wall to win her heart. I love Howler from the previous book and the new additions to the animal crew! Great read!
I did enjoy this book more than the first in the series; however, the plot is very similar between the two. The relationship development between Ronnie and Jack did feel more authentic. There were some inconsistencies that I noticed, but they didn’t affect the overall story. It was intriguing and somewhat suspenseful; and did leave me guessing as to who was stalking Ronnie.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
What I absolutely love about Lori Foster’s writing is the depth and layers with which she builds her characters. Ronnie and Jack start off with preconceived notions of each other. And maybe we, the readers, also have preconceived notions of certain aspects of their personality, character, background. Ms. Foster starts revealing layers a little at a time as this story and romance progress, making you see that perhaps a person shouldn’t be judged from a first impression. And, suspense! Lori is a master at building that too. This was one story that I did not want to read alone in the dark. As always, I was very gratified to get my happy ever after ending and written beautifully.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Another winner by Lori Foster. This is the second book in the series. I loved Ronnie and Jack because they complement each other. Ronnie is fiery and spunky. Jack is poised and calm except when it comes to Ronnie. She brings out another side of him. I loved the interaction between Ronnie and Jack’s family. It’s something she so deserves in her life. I also loved the animals in the book. It was good to see Howler still his adorably goofy self. Loved him with Peanut. It was one of my favorite things abut the book. The suspenseful parts kept me on the edge of my seat. They also had me pause my reading sort of like peeking through you’re fingers to what was coming next. It’s definitely a book that hooks you and won’t let you resurface until you’re finished.
Slow Ride
Great story that grabs you from the first line to the end.
I loved the suspense and mystery surrounding Ronnie.
Ronnie goes to Jack to hire him for a job that she doesn’t want him to take but he’s too intrigued in her not to take it. When they realize someone is after Ronnie, Jack is determined to find out who it is and to protect her even though she thinks she can handle everything on her own. Lori Foster has done an outstanding job on this story.
Strong family ties romance with a side of suspense.
I must admit I was a little surprised at how similar Slow Ride was to Driven to Distraction, the first book in Lori Foster’s Road to Love series. I think it jumped out at me as I just finished reading book 1 yesterday. Reading that book felt like a fresh experience and I was excited to read Slow Ride. Unfortunately I felt the push/pull between Ronnie and Jack was very similar to Brodie and Mary’s relationship in the first book. Too, the heroines’ employers what they collected etc just seemed too alike. That being said I enjoy Lori Foster’s writing style and I’m looking forward to Charlotte’s story the final book in the trilogy.
I received an advance reader copy via Netgalley.
Ronnie doesn’t need anyone for anything at anytime. Unfortunately for her, her employers feel she needs some added muscle tagging along on her pickups for them. She heads into town the night before her meeting just looking to unwind. A one and done if you will to get her nerves settled and blow off some steam. When a tall drink of water walks into the bar she sets her sights on the prize.
Jack just stopped off for something to eat after working all day and most of the night when he sees a platinum haired beauty sitting at the bar. Making eye contact, albeit briefly, confirms that she is feeling the same pull as he is. She propositions him and together they agree no names and one night. When a local calls him out by name she retreats much to his chagrin. Turns out she is his appointment the next day.
Ronnie doesn’t like to involve business and pleasure, and what a drag that rule turns out to be in this moment. Jack is just what she was looking for to have some fun. Maybe she can bend her own rules for this one time.
Jack tries his best to change Ronnie’s mind about how good they could be together. He starts breaking down her shell and finds she is lacking more than just a good time. She just needs to feel needed, special, loved. He makes it his mission to show her just how important she is.
Ronnie finds herself the victim of a stalker and they try to figure out who it is and why they feel she wronged them. The storyline here, for me, jumped the shark a little. I couldn’t get into the who/what/why and it felt forced like a conflict was needed and this just popped up. I wish I felt more connected to the words on the page where the stalker character was involved. Aside from that small portion, I loved the characters of Ronnie and Jack, as well as the secondary characters we met in the previous book. For that reason I can only give 4 stars for Slow Ride. I received an advance copy without expectation for review. Any and all opinions expressed are my own.
How could you not love Jack and Ronnie? Ronnie is prickly but underneath that prickly exterior is a sweet woman. She has been handed a lot of grief during her life, but she gets back up and charges ahead. She is also distrustful of people and emotions. Afraid to ask for too much. She might be disappointed again. Jack is so sweet and loving. Comes from a loving family and knows what it is like to get unconditional love. Then there is Howler and Peanut. Love those two. When Jack agrees to a job, in spite of Ronnie’s discouragement, she understands she is in big trouble. The more she knows him, the more she likes him and that can be dangerous for her. But there is a bigger danger stalking her and Jack will not let anyone or anything hurt her. He knows instantly that she is the one, he will just have to convince her of that and keep her safe. Will she let him?
