Her husband doesn’t want her anymore. The man next door would give up everything to have her.Sadie Hunt isn’t perfect—but her husband is. Nathan Hunt has her coffee waiting every morning. He holds her hand until the last second. He worships the Manhattan sidewalk she walks on. Until one day, he just…stops. And Sadie finds herself in the last place she ever expected to be. Lonely in her marriage.… be. Lonely in her marriage.
When rugged and sexy Finn Cohen moves into the apartment across the hall, he and Sadie share an immediate spark. Finn reveals dreams for a different life. Sadie wants to save her marriage. Their secrets should keep them apart, not ignite a blistering affair. But while Sadie’s marriage runs colder by the day, she and Finn only burn hotter.more
Despite what happened between Finn and Sadie that can be an issue for some, I found myself reflecting on why people do what they do. The reasons they seek attention to the point of jeopardizing relationships. I always enjoy Jessica’s writing and her approach on topics that may make some readers uncomfortable. I welcome her realism.
This is the story of a woman who always had the almost slave-like devotion of her husband until she didn’t. Now, will her new neighbor help her come to terms with her feelings of loss?
Slow burn with a twist
Idk if it’s right to call this a slow burn but by the time I finished the book, everything I expected to feel was completely different. I found myself wishing things would hurry along and get to the point but by the end of the book, I could see why it needed to be that way. This book definitely surprised me, because I ended up cheering for someone completely different than I did in the beginning.
Sadie Hunt had the perfect life, perfect husband & marriage, perfect job, perfect apartment & even the perfect dog named Ginger. But what if one day everything changes? Your perfect husband that worshiped and spoiled you, suddenly turned into a cold and standoffish stranger. Who rejects your advances and stays away. It doesn’t seem her husband wants her anymore. When Sadie tries everything to get him back, she is met with rejection after rejection. Worse thing is she has no inkling as to why. He won’t talk, stays away, and when he is home sleeps on the coach. She suddenly finds herself lonely in her perfect marriage, to her perfect husband Nathan Hunt. All she knows is he won’t talk about whatever is his problem. He acts like he feels nothing for her.
She was lonely, hurt, and not in a good place. When her new neighbor Finn Cohen, who happened to move into the apartment across the hall, comes calling. Her husband doesn’t want her anymore. But Finn feels fate has brought them to each other. He is willing to give up everything to have her for his own. When they make eye contact, her heartbeat races as it might for a new lover. When they part her mood creeps back to where it was before. Alone, sad & depressed.
Yes, there is lots of “angst” and a love triangle. If you are hurting and lonely, with temptation right in front of you, in the form of a good looking man. He also has made his desire for you well known, making you feel desirable & beautiful. Compared to your husband who doesn’t seem to want you any longer. Does that justify your actions?
This is a standalone forbidden romance. I was really glued to the story that was full of angst. I only could criticize that I really like a Happy Ever After ending. But didn’t feel that it would be that easy to mend a marriage or relationship. There are consequences to actions, and you can never built back trust once it is broken. This is why only 4*
5 big fat stars!
I read this book after it was recommended bc of its cheating storyline. Although it had me feeling strong emotions, it kept me riveted throughout the book. I couldn’t put the book down. I wasn’t sure who I was cheering on. But what I did know was the hot sex scenes were incredibly smokin!
This book might be a first from this author but it won’t be the last.
I’ve always admired Jessica Hawkins’ ability to not shy away from the tough stuff as a romance writer. She’s not scared to tackle subjects other authors steer well clear of for fear of dividing reader opinions, and because of this, she’s able to show a side of human nature romance doesn’t always portray. Her work makes you think. It makes you uncomfortable. It makes you confront truths you may rather not face, both about her characters, and often about yourself. She’s truly gifted, and Slip of the Tongue is no exception to this trend. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a romance read that pushes boundaries and sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
One of the most original contemporary romances I’ve ever read. I recently picked this up again and got sucked in as if it was the first time, because not only is it so beautifully written, but the situation…argh, the angst. (I love angst). This book will keep you guessing until the very last minute, and possibly unsure what you’d do in her place.
In the end, I hated all the characters and wished them all lonely existences. All three are deeply flawed, which I’m sure was the point, but I never found any source of redemption in any of them. I needed that.

This book, UGH, will twist your stomach in knots. I loved Nathan, or at least the way he was before the book started. Sadie tells of their relationship over the past seven years. He is the perfect husband, lover, partner, friend. Then, suddenly he isn’t. No warning. He closes up, quits talking, quits making love to her, quits texting her throughout the day, starts coming home late. Thus has been going on for two months. She falls into depression and begins to suspect he is having an affair.
In next door moves handsome, friendly, flirty, and married Finn. His wife and child are not currently with him and he is not happy in his marriage. He gives Sadie the attention she is so desperately longing for. And she crosses the line.
This is not just a story about infidelity, but about all the reasons people may turn to someone outside of their marriage. I’ve seen some reviews criticize this book for just this reason, but there are a lot of undertones happening that can trigger discord. When you are having fertility problems, you can feel the blame on your shoulders why you can’t conceive, especially if there are extenuating circumstances you may have caused. Also the failing health and imminent death of a parent puts more stress on a marriage.
Feeling all the emotions Sadie is experiencing puts us on a rollercoaster of emotions as she works her way through this quagmire. I only wish we could have had Nathan’s thoughts as we had no clue what he was doing or what he was thinking. I was so glad it finally come to a HEA for two of them. One of course doesn’t, but will have his story in one of the following books. There are 3 intertwined books, each a standalone but with some of the same characters in them. These are great characters and you will devour these books by Jessica Hawkins! 5 Amazing Stars!
So here is what I love about Jessica Hawkins… she is not afraid to tackle those hard topics that readers claim to “not like” such as cheating and love triangles.
Now, do I personally love these topics? Do I love a story with cheating or a really complicated love triangle in it? Eh.. not so much. I’m really more comfortable when there’s just one hero and one heroine in a story. However, you know what I also love and what gets me excited to dive right into a book? When I read the synopsis for a story that takes me out of my comfort zone and
has me completely intrigued guessing on what could happen.
Maybe that’s contradicting myself, but while I do love a nice heartwarming romance and don’t feel very comfortable with those hard topics… if the story is unique and good enough and has amazing writing I am happy to walk right out of my comfort zone for it.
Slip of the Tongue is worth getting uncomfortable for. There is a love triangle and this story does involve cheating so be warned. There will be times when you’re rooting for one guy and then you’re rooting for the other but Jessica Hawkin’s writing is so real that the story just pulls you right in.
After reading ‘Slip of the Tongue’, I had to take time to allow my chaotic feelings to fade away before writing this review.
Sadie Hunt was a woman with sensitive feelings. She was in a confused dilemma.. between the two feelings or maybe more?
This book was simply challenging.. The doubt.. the constant “what IF’ or ‘what should I do/dont?’ The book was vivid with personalities and challenges. The struggle between Nathan, Sadie and Finn were like a tangle between a cobweb..It will suck you into the circle of ugly jerk moments, anger and confusion.
Jessica wrote the story with an “everyday” people struggle…it was raw, gritty and beyond exceptional. I have read the book twice just to prove my mind was right. Gaaahhh, crazy good! You did well
In the end, I hated all the characters and wished them all lonely existences. All three are deeply flawed, which I’m sure was the point, but I never found any source of redemption in any of them. I needed that.
Slip Of The Tongue is so so freaking good. And what I love the most, is that Slip Of The Tongue evoked so many emotions from me on every level. It’s relatable it so many ways. It addresses issues such as the struggles of marriage, trust, doubt, love, sadness, deceit; just to name a few. I can honestly say I hated Sadie, Nathan and Finn at different times in the book. I can’t believe it took me this long to find and read this book but better late than never. Job well done Jessica Hawkins and I highly recommend reading it.
I could not put this book down! The writing was wonderful and the way the book flowed was written well. I will be reading more of her in the future.
Side note: this book does have cheating involved but it is still a great read!!
“I wish Nathan would knock on the door. Drag me home. Put his own arms around me. Make love to me. Remembering his vows has made me warm inside, fuzzy.”
First of all I LOVE the cover a lot! I visited NYC for the first time in 2014 and fell in love with the city! So I was pretty excited that this story took place there. This book is about Sadie who is happily married and then she isn’t. Her husband Nathan has been distant and cold towards her for two months now and Sadie has no clue why. During this time a new guy moves in next door: Finn. He pays attention to her and wants to hang out. Sadie is craving warmth and companionship. It’s like Nathan just doesn’t have any time for her and ignores her. He is indifferent to her. Finn is the exact opposite!
“In so little time, you’ve lit up my world like the sun. And you’ve warmed me just the same.”
I don’t want to go in too much detail because I don’t want to spoil it but let me tell you I was going back and forth between Nathan and Finn. I didn’t know who she would end up with and who I actually wanted her to end up with. Jessica really wrote a beautiful story were you kind of root for all the characters, because they aren’t bad people. They make bad decisions but who doesn’t?
There was a couple of times I wanted to wring Nathan’s neck. I just wanted him to open his mouth and tell Sadie what was going on. The same goes for Sadie, there were a couple of things she could’ve handled differently. Overall I really enjoyed this story a lot, the writing was really good and there wasn’t a moment I got bored. It had a steady pace and just enough drama to keep me going. I am looking forward to reading more books by Jessica! Before I forget the sex scenes were PHENOMENAL, they were pretty steamy and I really enjoyed reading them.
Sadie and Nathan have what they think is the perfect marriage until it’s not. This book was hard for me to read as infidelity is something I usually stay away from. Somehow Jessica Hawkins manages to get me to overlook it with a fast paced, chemistry packed love triangle. Suspected cheating, real cheating, loving more than one person- this one has it all. Beautifully written and well edited.
“You’re what I want. You can close off your heart, but don’t forget—I know how to tear you open. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again and again until you realize I will never, ever let you abandon me. And I will never, ever abandon you.”
Definitely recommend
