Greg Iles says in an intro to his readers that “this novel is a wild one.” The setting is familiar. So is Penn Cage, lawyer turned novelist and a secondary character in this twisted story about a decades’ old murder, incest, reincarnation, a disintegrating marriage, and a new murder. The suspense begins immediately, but neither John Waters nor his wife Lily persuaded me of the killer’s identity or fate. In the end, I felt let down; but I agree with Iles: “this … is a wild one.”
Very strange book, but kept me turning the pages. I don’t want to give away too much, but interesting concept and if you like supernatural mysteries, this book is for you
Illes is a superb writer and story teller. From th first word to the last, he will hold your attention.
There is no such thing as a bad Greg Iles book.
It was too weird for me. It is the first Penn Cage book that I have read that I haven’t liked but is the only book by Isles that has dealt wityh science fiction.
Gregg Ilse is one of the best authors I found if you like a good thriller. He is a little scary in some books but I love that. A great thriller and great author
always enjoy a book by Iles!!
Greg Iles has moved into different realm with this book, however, he always delivers a fast-paced tightly wound story. It may not be my favorite of his, but I enjoyed it. A bonus was having Penn Cage return as one of the characters.
I usually finish any book I start, but I didn’t make it half-way through this one. I found it borderline pornographic. The subject matter veered between sex and some sort of metaphysical silliness that I found to be utterly ridiculous. Maybe it got better. I’ll never know because I was completely repulsed by the book and I’ll probably never read this author again.
The writing is exceptional as always, but unfortunately it is very similar to the old fashioned romantic mysteries with the bodice ripping covers…. just an unrealistic concept and hokey execution….. from one of my favorite writers. I’m glad he got to write something different, but hopefully this is just a one-off for him.
Author has a wonderful way with words; I have enjoyed every one of his books that I have read.
I have read everyone of Greg Iles books. He keeps you captivated and puts you right in the storyline. The writing of this book is superb as usual but it was a little out there for me. I won’t give spoilers and you already know what the book is about so I won’t go into that. This was not my favorite of this author.
Meh. Unrealistic. I wasn’t expecting a fantasy novel.
I like Greg Isles, but this is not one of his better efforts
Greg Iles did his usual good job with this novel. He is simply a good writer.
At times I thought I was reading a trashy romance novel. Way too much sex to be interesting and the plot was bizarre. Some books make you question if something can really happen but this one was completely implausible.
I didn’t like it
The entire Greg Iles series of books must be on everybody’s reading list and this one is no exception.
Makes you really think! Could it be possible??? Thanks Greg Iles, great book. I couldn’t put it down!!
Greg Illes does such a wonderful job of showing the real sordid side of slavery and the harm it has and continues to have on our country.
