“In his masterly reworking of this powerful myth, Hillerman creates a kachina for contemporary times. . . . No wonder Hillerman’s stories never grow old. Like myths, they keep evolving with the telling.”— New York Times Book ReviewFrom the enduring “national and literary cultural sensation” (Los Angeles Times) Tony Hillerman, a crackling tale of myth, mystery, and murder featuring the legendary … of myth, mystery, and murder featuring the legendary Leaphorn and Chee.
Though he may be retired, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn hasn’t lost his curiosity or his edge. He’s eager to help Sergeant Jim Chee and his fiancée Bernie Manuelito with their latest case—clearing an innocent kid accused of robbing a trading post.
Billy Tuve claims he received the precious diamond from a strange old man in the canyon. Could it be one of the gems that went missing in an epic plane crash decades earlier? Now that it may have resurfaced, it’s attracted dangerous strangers to the Navajo lands.
Proving Billy’s innocence won’t be easy. Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito must find the remains of a passenger who died in the crash—one of 172 lost souls whose remains were scattered across the magnificent tiered cliffs of the Grand Canyon.
But nature may prove their deadliest adversary. To find the proof they need, the detectives must battle a thunderous monsoon and a killer as they plunge deeper into the dark realm of the Hopi Lord of Death—the guardian of the underworld known as Skeleton Man.

Tony Hillerman really helps you see inside the Navajo culture with entertaining and original characters
Super
Hillerman early on, but just as good as his later works. Leaphorn always gets his man, and Navajo culture is revealed.
I love Tony Hillerman, I wish he were still alive to put more books out. His daughter Anne Hillerman, has continued the Hillerman legacy and she is a great writer too. If you love the Four Corners area (NM, CO, AZ, UT) and love learning about indian culture… these books are a must read.
This book is one in a series of Lt. Leaphorn, Srgnt Chee mysteries. It is also very informative regarding Nevajo customs.
I have read all of Hillerman’s books, listened to them on CD and watched a couple of the movies. My very favorite writer.
Tony Hillerman never disappoints! Let’s have more of his books available on Book Bub please!
Hillermans books are another of my favorites , he knows how to build suspense, mixes the real with the country and mystery. Love to re-read hisbooks!
It was not my favorite. Never grabbed me, I just wanted to finish it.
I enjoy Hillerman’s stories and, with each book, learn something about about Nati9ve American culture.
I love all of Hillermans books. The SW setting and culture are an added bonus
One of the best writers.
Typical Hillerman – steeped in American Indian lore and descriptive Southwest history. Same charming characters that -after several novels -feel like old friends.
I love Tony Hillerman. Only issue was the number of guns involved, as in too many.
Hillerman never disappoints.
Classic Hillerman
Tony Hillerman is among the very best. He could spin a tale with rich imagery and realists characters like no other.
All the books in this series are very good. I’ve learned a lot about past and present Navaho life from them and the characters are folks I’d like to know.
Tony Hillerman is always a great read. Transports you to the four corners as if you were there. You can even follow the plot on maps!
