Great start to a new series.
I’ve read a number of books by this author and have enjoyed them all. This is true with this one, too. Skeet is a vampire and member of a group that hunts rogues and protects humans. Julian, a human, has a past with Skeet that she’s unaware of. When he saves her from a rogue attack, it opens her memories to their connection. She also has the ability to read thoughts and is able to save two children from being murdered. Now that she knows she can make a difference, she has a purpose with Skeet and the Shadow Squad. I requested an advanced reader copy from Booksprout and am under no obligation to leave this review.

Skeet put his mates wishes before his own!
by sewsummore
Julian had been attacked by a vampire and would have died if her Skeet, vampire rescuer had not turned her. It was the second time he had stepped in to save her, as a child he had been the one to rescue her when her father was about to kill her. It made her determined to fight for those unable to fight for themselves. It was not until he had the chance to spend time with her that Skeet realized she was his true mate but he feared that she would not accept her new life or him. This was a short but compelling story that made me eager to read more in the series. I liked Julian’s feisty attitude and Skeets determination to wait until she was ready to accept him as her mate, putting his mates wishes before his own was a true test of his love and devotion.

Love strong protective vampires who are sexy as all get out? Like strong sexy kick butt heroines? Then Ms Shutt has the best book for you. Julian has a little problem with the vampire currently sucking her dry. But here comes Skeet looking all sexy and stuff. This is a winner folks. I volunteered to read and review an advance reader copy.
Great little read!
A shorter, hot, vampire story, packed with, danger, desire, lust, love, chemitsry and fated mates
One entertaining little read with bite!
Julian is rescued from a rogue vampire by Skeet and his partner. The rogue drank too much so Skeet had to change her to save her. So in one night Julian not only found out vampires were real, she was killed by one and turned into one. And Skeet hasn’t even mentioned the mate thing yet. This was a fast, enjoyable book with likable main characters. I wish I felt like I knew a little more about them, but it was quite short. It also seemed as if Julian adjusted very easily. I would think there would’ve been at least one freak out. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
Loved how she was so ready to kick butt. Yeah, she needed his protection at first, and always will, in a sense, as a mate, but she is willing to learn.
The name Julian throws me though. It makes me think of Dr. Julian Bashear on ST:DS9. I also wonder about the origin of Skeet’s name too.
A few of the transitions felt a little rough to me. Overall, good story.

This book was intense in so many wonderful ways. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and I loved every moment. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book in exchange for a free copy.
Skeet is a vampire and belongs to the SHADOW SQUAD, a kind of vampire police squad. While patrolling he stops a vampire from killing a human woman, but because she is dying of blood loss, he has no choice but to turn her. Knowing that she is his mate makes the whole situation more difficult. The story is about his fight for Julian, and how she finally accepts him as her mate.
The story itself is not special, but still written in a short, entertaining way, with – for paranormals – normal behaviour.

You don’t need to but you will get a far better understanding of this book if you read blood games Avery first where we are introduced to this world.
Skeet a member of the Shadow Squad (a vampire policing unit that takes down rogues) comes to the aid of Julian when she is almost killed by a rogue vampire he has to turn her to save her. What really strikes him is that she can read his mind she is a reader a rare skill in the vampire world. She hears a man in her mind planning to kill his children and convinces Skeet to help her rescue them. What these two don;t know is that they actually have a connection in their pasts As they spend more time together Skeet realises she is his mate as he thought from the first meeting. Can he convince her he is the one for her You will have to read to see
Julian saw red eyes and fangs hovering over her as her heart beat frantically. She should never have taken this shortcut – it may cost her more than she wants to lose! But suddenly another voice called to the rogue vampire attacking her, then another set of kind red eyes looked down at her as her life began fading away. She thought she tasted the copper of blood and then fangs dropped from her gums! A body lay a few feet away in the alley and she knew her fanged hero had just rescued her. He helped her up, and she saw a woman there with the same set of knives at her waist, both of them members of the Shadow Squad. Skeet introduced himself and the woman, Lotus. Then they carried the body to their vehicle. But voices sounded in her head, and she heard Skeet remark that she was a panicked newbie. When she denied it was panic, she startled him since she could hear his thoughts, which was the rare skill of a “reader”! But one loud voice in her mind was an angry man who was about to kill his children! They had to do something! The man was taking the two children to his car. Their mother’s dead body was already in the trunk. Julian grabbed the man and told him to go to the police station. His thoughts said he would kill the children anyway. So Julian bit his neck and didn’t stop. The man didn’t deserve to live, even in jail. With sunrise quickly coming, Skeet had to arrange the scene to protect the vampire community’s existence. Then they returned to The Tower just as the sun rose.
Skeet had realized that Julian is his mate. After they fed from blood bags, Julian had the overwhelming desire to be with Skeet and she impulsively bit his shoulder and took some blood. He didn’t do that to her though, and she was embarrassed and asked why not. He told her if he had, they would be mated for life. Her thoughts immediately filled with insecurity, figuring he didn’t want her or she wasn’t worthy of him. He made her stay in the room with him and said they would talk after they had slept.
They went to see the vampire King and forgotten memories came back to Julian of how her father was going to kill her back when she was 7 years old – but Skeet rescued her and killed him instead, telling her she would forget! Being a vampire now had taken the compulsion away and let the memory come back. Skeet had actually saved her twice!
This is a great start to the new series. It’s hard to imagine how Julian can be so accepting of her new life, but she’s a strong woman and follows her heart. When will Skeet finally make the move to make them official mates? Will he accept her growing desire to be part of the Shadow Squad, despite his protective nature? Grab your copy and get ready for an exciting new mini-series!
