Audio/Ebook Review: Skating on Thin Ice: Seattle Sockeyes Hockey (Game On in Seattle, #1) by Jami Davenport (Author), Shaina Summerville (Narrator)
Anytime there are two strong personalities, a clash is inevitable. Yet, Davenport is an ace at managing the fallout. Skating on Thin Ice is a passionate drama that feeds off the heat of attraction and slowly exposes the heart underneath. Lauren and Ethan are my favorite Davenport characters because they go after what they want instead of watching from the sidelines. I’d read the book first and sort of fell into the audio later, but Summerville is pure gold. Her narration is spot on and captivating to listen to.
What a Romance Hockey Legend. To see a franchise team build from the start and what all it takes. I know this is one of several in a series. Even if there weren’t books to follow this could be a stand alone. I don’t recommend it though. Once you read “Skating on Thin Ice” you will want to know the rest of the story. Ethan Parker is such an up standing citizen with great values. He hates to deceive those he will come close to but he has to for the greater good. Not just for personal gain but for gain of those in the Seattle area. Lauren is a woman trying to make it in a man’s world. She has been burned before and it takes a lot for her to trust. Once you’ve gained her trust she given it openly but if you lose it, it’s gone. Will it be gone forever? Can these two work out their misgivings for the greater good or even for love? Jami Davenport is an amazing author. Her writings make you feel the emotions her characters are going through, good or bad. She makes you see the story as it unfolds. I love her writings to say the least. I recommend this book and many others by her. She won’t disappoint you.
I really enjoyed this book.
Lots of ups and downs and plenty of subterfuge. But all against Ethan’s wishes. He didn’t want to be and ‘undercover boss’. He hated to lie but the investors group and the sellers made him to protect their hides and more funding from upcoming games. Lauren didn’t rust easily after being burned spectacularly. But they built a tentative relationship. And took the hockey world by storm. Loved how she dominated a male field and he had nothing but admirations and respect for her along with support which was sorely lacking from her Current position. Loved the end.
Ethan wants to own a team. Lauren has been trying to gain respect in the hockey world. These two seem like the most unlikely pair. The only thing they have in common is the love of the game. Once Ethan goes undercover to find out about the team hs is buying, Lauren is the one who gives him the inside scoop. He instantly respects her opinions and Lauren finds she is growing fond of him. I enjoyed the banter between these two. The realistic relationship between Lauren and the players and the realistic uncertainty of new ownership. Ethan my not have been a pro athlete, but I enjoyed how these two found each other. I was hooked from the first chapter and found myself always hoping for their happy ending.
Shaina Summerville really brought this story to life. She has an easy to listen to voice. She kept the characters distinct and easy to follow. Her male voices were smooth and all different. Shaina really brought out all the struggles and emotions of Lauren. Overall, this was a great listen.
A really good hockey billionaire romance
Audiobook version: 4 stars overall, 5 stars story, 3 stars narration
I love the both story and the characters. I am a hockey fan, and I could tell that the author has a passion for hockey. The plot also sounded realistic to me. This book covers a lot of themes in romance: office, sports, billionaire, and enemies to friends to lovers romance. The hero Ethan is keeping secrets, but he is a good guy. The heroine Lauren is a tough, determined, intelligent woman who has been burned in the past by an untrustworthy ex-husband. Both Ethan and Lauren feel an intense attraction to each other as they try to stay professional, do their jobs, and do their best for a certain pro-hockey team. The author makes the romance sizzle while having excellent dialogue. Ethan and Lauren’s personalities go together so well, and the happy ending was wonderful!
There is only one thing wrong with this audiobook: the solo narrator’s unfortunate choice of the hero’s voice. Ethan Parker is a handsome, fit billionaire in his thirties, but the narrator makes his voice sound like that of a cranky old man! I can only describe the voice as flatly discordant, strident, and almost a monotone. It is very unsexy and often pulled me out of the story until I learned to ignore it. I don’t think any woman could marry a man with that voice unless she was tone deaf. Thankfully, the narrator Shaina Summerville does a wonderful, beautiful job with the rest of the narration. She is great at women’s voices and old men’s voices, and even Ethan’s best friend Brad sounds pretty sexy. She is emotive and really good at pacing. I would like to listen to more of this series, but whoever narrates the rest of the series needs to do a much better job on the hero’s voice. If you are thinking of buying this audiobook, make sure beforehand that you listen to the entire sample to hear Ethan’s voice and decide if you like it.

Very, very well written and unputdownable. The characters came alive in this story and their connection was palpable. I would read this one again and again.
Promising start to this series in a story that is Undercover Boss meets hockey plus a slow burn romance. Ethan is a Seattle based billionaire determined to bring hockey to his city. When he finally gets the chance to purchase a team, he must secretly go undercover to ensure everything with the deal goes smoothly. Lauren was raised in a hockey family and is trying to be taken seriously as a woman in a man’s world. Ethan recognizes her talent but worries what will happen when she finds out the truth about who he really is and what his plans are for the team. Sparks fly as these two reluctantly become friends and allies but will their trust issues threaten their fledgling romance before it ever has a real chance?
Review for audio version:
While the narrator is great at telling the story and the female voices, she falls short on the male voices. The voice for Ethan was grating on my ears and difficult to listen to and the other guys weren’t much better being stiff and disjointed.
Who is Ethan Parker ? what is he doing Gainesville! what secrets is he hiding? Can Lindsay Schneider learn to give her heart again after being cheated on, lied to, left with mountains of debt from her ex husband? She is intrigued by Ethan! Falling for him was a big step in letting her guard down. When his big secret is revealed, will she believe him why he lied to hide everything ? Will she ever forgive him? Why did she feel so betrayed? Did she really love him? Ethan wanted to tell her all along why he was there , who he really was, and why he changed his name. He wanted, for once, to be in a relationship based on love, not his money. . Can he win her heart back? This is a story of love, trust, lies, feeling betrayed, Jamie Davenport sports romance goes behind the scenes of what makes a sports team , forward thinking, modern, making women in executives positions. Shaina Summerville narration is flawleess and gives each character their own personality and voice. I was gifted this audio book and offered my honest review!
A bit disappointing. Loved the scenic descriptions but characters did not seem well developed.

Semi-quick read for me. I love the magnetic pull between Lauren & Ethan, they are truly meant to be.
This was a slow burn relationship, but it was so worth the wait.
I’d recommend this book.
Was an alright read, but lacked strength of characters to make it truly enjoyable.
A good read but a bit repetitious half way through but then interesting again. All about the hockey world!
One of the Best books I’ve read. Loved this story just Great. Didn’t want it to end.
