She Shoots and Scores!
Jacquie Biggar has done it again. I have yet another new book boyfriend—Mac Wanowski, captain of the Victoria WarHawks hockey team.
Mac is the perfect guy—a body that won’t quit, a quick wit to match, intelligent, chivalrous, and just damaged enough to tug your heartstrings without wanting to bash him over the head for his stupidity. (Well, not too often, anyway.)
Sam is his perfect match—strong, smart, quick-tempered, sassy, big-hearted. And she has a past with true heartache and a present with secrets that make her just a little mysterious.
I read this story in one afternoon, quickly turning pages to see what would happen next. It’s not enough that they’re trapped together in an isolated cabin, both trying to ignore burgeoning feelings and protect their fragile hearts. That alone would be a story worth reading. But Mac is injured, and someone is trying to kill him. The situation was dicey from the first word to the mind-blowing climax.
The characters are people I’d love to meet in real life. The plot moves along at a blistering pace. And the settings are beautifully depicted—I could almost smell the cedar and wood smoke as I shivered from the cold.
If they gave a Stanley Cup to authors, Biggar would deserve one for this story.
This book is the perfect mixture of romance with an action packed story line to keep you turning the pages. The author does a great job of drawing the reader into the world of ice hockey and the murky world of match fixing and deals with the mob. Mac Wanowski is a champion ice hockey player and, with him on board, his team looks set to win the season. This does not suit everyone and Mac is seriously injured while playing in a match two weeks before the final. He is sent away to a remote cabin in the mountains to heal. The team’s doctor delivers his niece, Sam, a physical therapist who desperately needs a break, to assist Mac with a speedy recovery. Little does he know that she has been offered the opportunity to obtain a contract as the physical therapist to Mac’s team but, in return, she must slow down his recovery.
When Sam meets Mac her soft heart quickly goes out to him, especially when she learns of theloss of his wife and unborn baby in a terrible accident a few years previously. Sam is also attracted to the taciturn hockey star and she can sense it is reciprocated. Sam makes a decision to try to help Mac and ensure that he is able to play in the final match of the season but she is unaware that there are other, much more dangerous people lurking, who are determined to keep Mac off the ice.
I enjoyed the character of smolderingly sexy Mac, with his heartbreaking past, and the sweet and big hearted, Sam, with her history of financial anxiety and determination to succeed in a male dominated profession.
An entertaining and easy read with a great twist at the end and lots of romantic ups and downs to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I’m a huge fan of hockey, mystery, and romance–“Skating on Thin Ice” had it all. I loved the little details weaved into the story about hockey, but it was the characters and story that held my interest. The storyline drew me right in, and I ended up finishing it in one sitting. Mac took a hit during a game right before the playoffs and Samantha was assigned to help him recover. I loved the sparks between Mac and Sam and the danger that surrounded them. A quick paced story with a few surprises I wasn’t expecting. I thoroughly enjoyed this and toss my (Sharks) hat to the author. I will be reading the next book in the series.
Sam and Mac are interesting characters, as they really don’t fit any “mold”. After Mac suffered a hard impact in a pre-playoffs game Sam was the physical therapist assigned to his recovery. They are sent to a remote cabin as part of a plot to delay his recovery; however, she becomes unwilling to delay his recovery after learning of the loss of his wife and unborn child a few years before. Completely unaware of the perils of this decision, she does everything in her power to facilitate his speedy recovery. The potential romance and imminent danger will draw you into this story from the very beginning. Atypical characters and the sports/mystery story line result in a compelling read.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
So many secrets
Skating On Thin Ice: The Men of Warhawks – Book 1 by Jacki Biggar is an intriguing and suspenseful read along with really interesting characters. Mac and Sam are seemingly thrown together in an isolated cabin. What seemed so idyllic becomes a scary and dangerous place.
The plot is twisted and brings about some serious heartbreak for this book couple.
Overall, an entertaining read all around with an enthusiastic HEA.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Mac is a hockey player who gets hurt by another player. He needs to recover so he can get back on the ice. Sam is a physical therapist and the niece of the team doctor. I thought the author did a good job writing the storyline but I wish there was more about the characters together. There was a lot going on with Mac and Sam that felt rushed a bit. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
** spoiler alert ** He just wants to get back to hockey, she is trying to be independent. Neither expected the chemsitry. What happens when there is more at play?
This was a steamy quick sports read. I loved how there was more beneath his surface than the tough hockey exterior. I didn’t blame her for wanting to be able to stand on her own two feet and for being hesitant to allow things to happen. Good read and will definitely read more in this series!
Easy reading with some intrigue. Is someone out to harm Mac and why is Sam meant to delay his physiotherapy until next season.
Something to warm up cold winter evenings
Jacquie Biggar certainly has a way with words and the skill to create hot and attractive characters in her stories. And this book is no exception with the cynical and driven Mac Wanowski, determined to bury the tragic past in his fast paced career as captain of the Victoria War Hawks hockey team. And Sam, a reserved but determined young woman who has to deal with this stubborn and reclusive sport’s star.
With an injury threatening his participation in the play offs, Mac reluctantly agrees to the personal attention of a physical therapist recommended by the team doctor.at his beautiful mountain retreat. But Sam is definitely not the male therapist Mac was expecting and sparks fly from their first meeting. Not everyone wants the team’s star player to recover and it is not until the end that we find out who is behind the plot. And let me warn you it is not who you expect.
In the meantime we have the heat of relationship that is developing between Mac and Sam and the freezing temperatures of a snow laden mountain storm that isolates the two of them at the mercy of hired thugs. There is passion, danger and surprises and of course a very healthy dollop of romance.
Something to warm you up during the long, dark, cold evenings ahead this winter. Very enjoyable.
Mac Wanowski is the perfect hero, an imperfect man who rises above his grief to win the day and more importantly the heroine’s heart. Mac and Sam’s easy banter and complicated pasts kept me hoping they’d find their happily-ever-after but also worried they might not. Skating on Thin Ice has everything a reader could hope for and more. I loved the fast-paced action, high-stakes intrigue, and the vividly described settings of a big-league hockey rink and a remote mountain home made even more secluded and inaccessible by snowstorms.
Skating on Thin Ice by Jacquie Biggar is a wonderful start to the brand new series The Men of Warhawks. I thoroughly enjoyed Sam and Mac’s love story! It was filled with plenty of love, romantic tension and suspense to keep you entertained. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books in this wonderful series.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
A suspenseful romance, one where the players are being played by forces outside of their orbit. When Mac is injured once again, he takes time to recuperate at a teammate’s mountain cabin. Nursing both his physical and emotional pain, he is unprepared for the young physiotherapist that comes to take care of him and help him with his rehabilitation. However, events take a strange turn and Mac begins to realise that there is more to his supposed accidents than he at first thought and that since Samantha has joined him in the cabin, she is at risk too. The tragedy of this story is that once people allow themselves to find an easy way out of a problem, they don’t understand that very often the easy way is a path to destruction and ruin. When betrayal stares both Mac and Sam in the face, they are appalled when they become aware of how they have been played. Even though Mac is a grumpy, egotistical sportsman, he nevertheless has a heart and puts Sam’s safety ahead of his own. Sam is cute, but strong-minded, never allowing Mac or the circumstances to drag her down. Together they weather both the literal and figurative storm that blows through their lives and ultimately come out of the situation better people. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
This was a nice quick read. Mac and Sam are great characters and I enjoyed the chemistry between them. The twist at the end was a nice surprise. “I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.”
Shows what can go on behind the scenes and the consequents.
What a who dunnit for Mac and Sam, trying to figure out if someone, and who, is trying to kill them, trying not to fall in love and it all just blows up on them. Had me fooled. If you enjoy a mind games grab this book!!
A romantic suspense filled with danger and a twist I didn’t see coming. The descriptions were so good that I felt like I was right there with Mac and Samantha. There were a few times they both irritated me – so much chemistry but fighting against it. UGH. A great start to this series.
I enjoyed this book. The plot was suspenseful. Characters are well-developed and believable.
A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. Mac injured and goes to a cabin for his rehab where Sam comes to help him get back on the ice for the play off games. Sam’s uncle is the Doc for the team and Coach who isn’t happy with Mac run into some trouble. A good read to start the series off.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Skating on Thin Ice. The repartee between Mac and Sam(antha) was awesome. Both Mac and Sam have pasts to overcome. As Sam works to help rehabilitate Mac’s knee, someone with a sniper rifle shoots at them. Was it a rogue hunter or a deliberate attempt on their lives? This story has elements of humor, suspense, romance, and betrayal. The ending really surprised me, I also stayed up much too late to finish this compelling story!
In a world of many ice hockey books, this one stands out in terms of the story and the characters. Mac Wanowski, sniper for the WarHawks, is injured just before the Stanley Cup, and he retreats. He’s followed to his retreat by Sam[antha], a physical therapist assigned to him by the team doctor. Various attempts are made on their lives – and the suspense builds nicely to a fairly unexpected climax. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone new to Jacquie Biggar’s writing – those familiar with it won’t need to be told twice!
I received an advance copy of this book.
