Rebels. Misfits. Bad boys who rule the streets. Everyone’s welcome at the worst kept secret in town, just as long as you don’t mind getting your reputation—and your heart—a little dirty. Welcome to Patchwork House… two years away and one too many broken hearts, Tweetie swore off skaters—but she never expected Flip.
Flip was the most famous skater in the world until he traded his place at Patchwork with the little girl whose life he ruined. Now Tweetie’s all grown up, and one chance encounter brings them together. He knows the right thing to do is disappear before things get ugly, but he never was very good at being good.
She’s back, and so is he—all bets are off. Nothing will stop this bad boy from finally getting his lost girl. They’re written in the stars, and it’s time she knows it.
The first lesson Flip taught Tweetie was how to fall.
It was also the last thing she remembered when they met again, because she didn’t just fall for him.
She slammed.

From the start I enjoyed this book because it was different from other books I have read before. The storyline was unique and that is what I truly loved. Tweetie is an awesome character that is trying to become a professional female skateboarder and trying to find her place and the one person she wants to be with. Flip was a famous skateboarder and tragedy happened so he sticks to the shadows trying to protect others. There are secrets being held and Tweetie and Flip try to form a relationship but they are both so stubborn so it takes some time. Not to spoil anything Ill just say this is a great read and it is very unique.
Skater Boy was a unique captivating story that grabs you from the start and won’t let go. There are not enough word for me to accurately describe how much I enjoyed this story. This is my first novel by Mary Catherine Gebhard and she gave me a story I won’t soon forget making it one of my top reads for 2019. This is a story about skate-boarders a sport that’s new to me, yet this story was more than just a sport romance.
This was a complex, layered story with a numbered of well-developed intriguing characters. Told in dual POV, the story takes us on a journey, alternating between past and present day, as we uncover the clues slowly being revealed to the mystery surrounding the inhabitants of Patchwork House.
The main characters Nate/Flip and Tweetie had a love that was so intense it could not be denied. The Rebel Gods, founders of Patchwork House were also a major part of the story. You will be fully invested in these characters and the mystery that surrounds them from page one.
This was a slow-burn romance that will give you all the feels but I loved that this was more than just romance. There was suspense, angst, secrets to be revealed, friendship and so much more. I absolutely loved this story. This is the first book in this new series and I am super excited to learn about the other characters. I CANT WAIT FOR MORE!
Skater Boy was a phenomenal read worthy of more than 5 stars. I loved it and would highly recommend this page turner to all lovers of romance.
First, I’m just going to say I flipping love Mary Catherine Gebhart. I find her writing so beautifully perfect. She can take a character and in a couple chapters they are either my best friend or my book boyfriend.
This is a new world and a start to an incredible series, I am biting my lip waiting for the next book.
This story is about the skater boy world in 1989 it goes back and forth from present to past. This book starts in the middle and I found the back and forth to be brilliant.
You have a house of misfit renegade boys who break their own rule and let a girl live with them. This is about a patchwork family that is incredibly protective of each other especially protective of the girl they call Tweet.
This is Flip and Tweets story and omg what a story it is. The angst and the push and pull between these two was off the charts. I swear I held my breath half of the time. I love nothing more then a story where a guy is loving a girl from afar and just figures he has to have her. There of course, are secrets and therefore reasons why he doesn’t just go for it!!
This book is just one of those books that embedded itself in my heart!! Honestly a favorite of 2019, a must read.
There’s nothing quite like kryptonite to me like a golden-hearted bad boy and Skater Boy gave me not one but four Rebel Gods I absolutely adored!! I’m not sure quite what I expected when I dove into this book yet I quickly found myself falling in love with the world of Patchwork House and the unforgettable and phenomenal characters I met.
Flip was a lost soul wandering and searching for a home of his own. The way he loved with his whole being was beautiful even in the moments where he had me frustrated and wanting to thump him on the head.
Tweetie was such a loveable young woman. Even after everything life threw her way she still made life better for her Rebel Gods. Watching her grow up in their world was quite entertaining with moments that had me laughing out loud while others gripped my heart. I loved watching her blossom into the fierce Rebel Goddess she was meant to be.
Flip and Tweetie were the embodiment of true soulmates and I loved every moment of their poignant and emotionally mesmerizing journey. My heart went through the wringer as it remembered how unforgettable a first love was. From the angst to the magnetic pull and butterflies in my stomach I was captivated. Skater Boy was not quite what I was expecting yet it took me by surprise in the best of ways. After this fantastic and captivating introduction to Patchwork House I am eagerly looking forward to more from the Rebel Gods.
This was my first book by this author. And it was different. Not bad different, but not what I was expecting when I signed up for it.
It was a little bit confusing in the beginning, as you don’t really know what’s going on. But the more you read, the more you get the picture.
The book plays in the 80es, but it’s not really old school I’d say. A lot of things where different in these days, so probably young people won’t get it, or don’t understand the behavior, the actions. Probably!
Flip is a great skateboarder , with no parents, and is living in a house (Patchwork house) with his 3 best friends. Patchwork House is like a group home, but no officials. Founded by these 4 young boys / men.
Tweetie is a girl, raised by 3 of them in that house.
There are a lot of secrets around, and bit by bit you get the whole story. It’s not revealed in one big bam, tiny little pieces come out every now and then.
This story has a lot of feelings in it. It’s well written, interesting, slow (burn). A lot of sadness in it too. Yearning. Hurt.
I am really interested in how the next books in this series play out!!!
I kindly received an arc for an honest review.
4 Stars
Skater Boy is the first book in Mary Catherine Gebhard’s Patchwork House series, and it introduces readers to a cast of characters that are complex, diverse and very appealing.
I went into this story blind, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a unique and intriguing story that captured my interest from the very beginning. I loved this group of corrupt bad boys, who underneath their brooding and gruff exterior had hearts of gold. The characters are incredibly appealing, complex and diverse and I cannot wait to discover more of their back stories.
The chemistry between Flip and Tweetie is undeniable, but I was kind of disappointed that physical intimacy is pretty much non existent in this title.
Skater Boy is an angsty, emotional slow burn romance, and I’d recommend this title to anyone who enjoys Tijan or Erin Watt as Mary Catherine’s writing style had a similar feel to me. This story recognises that family is what you make it, and I’m sure many readers will fall for these brave, compassionate, and selfless young men.
Overall I liked this book however I got lost a lot with the time line going back and forth too fast I feel maybe need to be fleshed out some more go deeper with the main characters. I loved the characters and the premise of this book and would love to read more.
I received an ARC for my honest opinion.
My first Mary Catherine Gebhard book and it was EVERYTHING!!!!! I literally read it in one setting, staying up way too late! Tragedy struck Tweetie at a young age. She was welcome into a new family. She made herself a checklist for finding the right guy. One night she found him but he disappeared. Years later she still thinks about him. But Flip, her idol, is now living with her. He surely doesn’t make the checklist, but Tweetie feels a connection with him. There are secrets that will come out. Will she find her lost love?? Will Tweetie and Flip see if there is more to that connection? Will the secrets tear everything apart? This is a Must Read!! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!
Skater Boy by Mary Catherine Gebhard was an absolutely phenomenal read and happened to be my first venture into this author’s storytelling ability. Tweetie and Flip’s slow burn romance was insanely intense, like my heart in the pit of my stomach intense. Their story managed to wholeheartedly captivate my soul and left me breathless as I devoured, no actually more like inhaled every part of it in one sitting.
This story gave me all the FEELS from the heartwarming angst and emotion that was perfectly intertwined throughout the pages! I cannot freaking wait to get my hands on more books in the Patchwork House series because quickly found myself not only falling for Tweetie and Flip, but also Romeo, Daniel and King. They all deserve their own stories and I can’t wait to see what Mary Catherine Gebhard comes up with next!
5 SKATER BOY STARS!! I love the journey this authors takes us on for Tweetie and Flip. This story is about family, love, friendship and Feels of the past and present. I did not know what to expect with this book and what I got was a phenomenal story. I can’t wait to read this next book in this series. If you are looking for something different, this book should definitely be on your 1-Click list.
This book is so super special to me, because I grew up around skate boarders. I wasn’t nearly in the scene like this group, but I’ve always had a love for it! I don’t remember seeing any female skaters, so this was especially amazing to me. Ok that being said, HOLY SHIT BALLS THIS WAS GOOD! LOL. I loved every second of this. I was super sad that I couldn’t just sit down and binge (darn work), but I read as much as a could as often as I could to finish.
Tweetie, oh Tweetie. I adored EVERYTHING about Tweetie. I loved how she was a tomboy who had some of the same inner girly thoughts/wants/needs as the rest of us. I also loved how she had this amazing crew as men that helped raise her. Tweetie may have had a very different up bringing, but it was like she had these 3 big brothers always looking out. I adored their relationship with her so much, even though they were “corrupted” youth, they didn’t want her to be caught up in that same lifestyle. They were also her biggest cheerleaders. They made sure she did all of the skate competitions and even had done some questionable things when things didn’t go as they should have. That’s such an amazing family to have, even if it isn’t a traditional family. King really took the role of “big brother” so series, and he was one of my favorite people for that. I loved that Romeo was the one that they always had to reel in, he was just hysterical! And of course we have Daniel, I loved and hated how he always called her “little girl.” He was kind of the silent and noble type of the group.
Then we add in Flip. His involvement in this book was so instrumental. From the moment we meet him and see him interact with Tweetie I was totally sucked in. It was so far out there and very taboo, but his obsession with her was all consuming! For him and me! His devotion to her was just unparalleled, and I thought it was so brave of him to stay in the shadows. His involvement in her life though was astounding. I loved that he was there for everything, even if it were hidden away. Flip and King’s interactions were also very interesting. Their constant bickering and arguments created the perfect amount of drama. These men were both very alpha about Tweetie, it was kind of adorable. They both had so much to fight for!
Overall I couldn’t have asked for more. There were soooo many twists and turns, it made the for best possible roller coaster ride of emotions. Emotions in a book are my absolute favorite and there was no shortage of those. There were some pretty deep things going on in the background of this too, from being the “corrupt” youth in the 80’s, to women trying to be equal, to not giving up to “the man”, all of it was JUST SO PERFECT! I loved all of the symbolism and hidden keys in there. Everything about this just made it such an all around amazing book. Mary Catherine did such an amazing job with her writing. I truly didn’t want to stop reading and I CANNOT wait until we get to hear about King! Romeo and Daniel definitely have me curious too. I’m going to be on my toes waiting for the next and the next!!
I will be the first to admit, this wasn’t a book I was expecting from MCG. While saying that, I wasn’t disappointed. I was actually pretty excited to see this side of her.
This book starts off present day, but you quickly get a glimpse of how it all starts. What you don’t get, just then, is how it all fell apart.
Throughout the book this author leads you on a journey of understanding. With each piece she gives you, you feel as though a puzzle is clicking into place.
In the beginning Tweetie is welcomed back into the fold of Patchwork House. She meets her childhood idol, a skater. What she doesn’t realize is her idol knows her better than she knows herself.
Flip has a carefree life. He’s taking off, going places. He doesn’t think about consequences…until that’s all he CAN think about.
This is a book about the evolution of love. It’s super angsty. MCG left me hanging so many times I lost count. She made up for it with a sweet, sweet ending.
The backstory unfolds and you get snippets of the lives of each of the other Rebel Gods at Patchwork House. Those have me chomping at the bit to see every facet of the other characters lives.
This is a huge 5 stars from me and I can see this series being one for the ages.
This is a true master piece the writing is fantastic as we follow and fit all the puzzle pieces together. Tweetie is the only girl in an all male dominant club with the bad boys and that right their grabbed my full attention, it was a very emotional beautiful and some dangerous situations but I really liked all the flashbacks so we could understand the past and then the future now on how it all came to start, the characters are exceptionally written and once you start your not putting this down.
Skater Boy is not just a love story, it is an intricately woven story about family, love, loss and the deep rooted secrets that people will keep to protect one another. From the very first page, I was drawn into Flip, Tweetie, King, Romeo and Daniel’s world and I couldn’t put the book down until I reached the end. I cried for all that these beautiful souls lost, I rejoiced alongside them and I swooned over the way Flip loved Tweetie. I also gained a new appreciation for skateboarding and thoroughly believe that I need to find my own “Skater Boy/Rebel God”. This book is unlike anything that I have ever read before and I can tell you with certainty that I won’t ever forget this story. I cannot wait to read the other books in the Patchwork House series. Trust me when I say, you need this book in your life!
I have mixed feelings about this story, but I really did enjoy it. I was prepared to throw my Kindle across the room a few times, because OMG the angst and secrets and lies and I just really wanted to throw some punches at these characters to get them to be a little less young and dumb.
Tweetie’s story is complicated, and made more so by the Patchwork guys trying to keep her safe. This tactic is well known to backfire and they are too over-confident to see or even admit when it does. She’s a tough young woman though, and I admire her even when I want to shake her a little.
Flip and King and the rest of the guys need a swift kick, and more than once. I get why and how they made the choices they did, but dang. They complicated things so much more than they had to!
One of my only complaints is that even after all these pages, I’m left feeling like I’m not super sure I know much about any of the characters simply because nobody ever talks about anything, or if they do, you aren’t super sure it isn’t part lie. I’d like some clarity.
I’m excited for the next in the series to learn more about King and get his full story.
Forever Her Shadow
A Top Read for 2019!!! The story, the characters, the family they created delivered an absolutely unforgettable, utterly fantastic story!!! I cannot stop thinking about Tweetie and Flip!
A young girl left with nothing, found an uncoventional family. A bunch of social outcasts that cared for and made her a home. They made a life for her. They gave her a family. And ultimately they loved and protected her.
And then there was Flip. The skater boy that she never forgot. Their history is complicated. She may not have known he was there, but he was always part of her life in some way. The boy with so many secrets.
This story gave me all the feels. Talk about a slow burn…I almost went up in flames!!! The intensity between Tweetie and Flip was indescribable! They were written in the stars! Nothing could gave kept them apart.
Spectacular story telling with characters that will embed themselves in your heart! This series is incredible! I am already eagerly awaiting King, Romeo and Daniel’s stories. I WANT MORE!!! Read it!
Patchwork House where the Rebel Gods of Heaven Falls reside
The residents at Patchwork are a blend of society’s forgotten or unwanted – either by choice or circumstance. Patchwork house is a safe haven for them but considered a blight on and by the community – a den of deviants. (they could not be more wrong)
This little crew of deviants had my heart right from the start. They were all so vivid and the contrasting personalities just made the story. I am looking forward to the next episode. Gebhard did a beautiful job of setting up this series.
This is Flip and Tweety’s story – full of loss, laughter, angst, misguided sacrifice and love.
This is the first in the Patchwork House series. It is a New Adult romance that follows the lives of the four Rebel Gods.
The story line ping pongs from current to past events and is told from dual perspectives. Overall this is a very emotional and heartbreaking read that guarantees to endear the reader to the cast – I felt every heartbreak, every fear, and each victory.
I had a few negatives that impacted the story for me. I found various inconsistencies in the story. The ages of the characters during certain events. And this quite possibly may just be me being greedy but I would have liked a bit more meat (background) pertaining to certain scenes and characters.
Holy moly, what a ride! Using flashbacks from several points in their lives to show the love story of Flip and Tweetie as it progressed over the course of 10 years, Mary Catherine Gephard created the ultimate slow burn and man was I into it. The way it jumped from the present (1989) to the past could get a little confusing if you weren’t paying attention to the chapter headers, but I really enjoyed the way it used the flashbacks to push the story forward. There were so many twists and turns that even though I thought I knew where the story would end up, there was no way to predict how it got there.
One of things I believe the author excelled at is character invention. From the main Patchwork House founders to smaller characters like Penelope, Sparky, Bacon, and Pants, she created characters that made me want to learn more. Even a couple characters we only met once or twice peaked my interest. I loved escaping into this world and can’t wait to find out which of the rebel gods I get to learn about next. Just remember I called dibs on Romeo.
This is my first read from this author and what really drew me in actually was the blurb. I read it and I was possessed with the need to read this. The promise of a story of a lone skater girl in a boy dominated world, labeled as rebels, was just too much for me to resist. So, I went ahead, dive right in and lose myself to this amazing alternate world.
The story was set in 1989 which for me I’d like to consider as the 90s already. Now, we know during those years that there weren’t many female skateboarders, actually until now it was mostly boys still. There were a lot in those years that I really like. I don’t know why but mostly while reading this I can’t help but hear Avril Lavigne’s song Skater boy in my head. I guess, the book does give this kind of vibe.
Skater Boy tells the story of Tweetie and Flip, who met again after long years of being out of the Patchwork House, a place for the delinquents of their society. It was mostly told in dual POV and there were flashbacks to their younger years that majorly play big vital role in the story.
I like Tweetie and given how her life was turned upside down, she grew up pretty cool. A bit tomboyish but still a female who searched for that mystery boy she met; the one who taught her skateboarding. Flip is not your typical rebel/ bad boy. I was surprised by the depth of his character and how far he would go for the girl that he loves. That was just plain romantic. They just don’t make this kind of boy anymore at this time, in my opinion LOL. I have enjoyed the slow burn of their romance and it was definitely squeal worthy moments.
The secondary characters of the story are also to watch out for. I’m intrigue by King’s past, by Daniel’s silent ways and Romeo’s Casanova persona. I’ll be waiting (im)patiently for the next book to come out of this Patchwork House world.
“Tell me not to do this.” Even as I cautioned her, I went to her. “Tell me to get into that room and shut the door.” I lovered myself on top of her, weight on my arms, searching her lakewater eyes. “I want his.” Her throat bobbed with the breath. I zeroed on it.
The couple’s connection was heart fluttering awesome. It gave me these amazing feels. And I was blown away by some of the scenes between them. I particularly loved how hot it made the slow burn of their romance.
And I’m so happy we got a little peek on what’s comming next.
