Rebels. Misfits. Bad boys who rule the streets. Everyone’s welcome at the worst kept secret in town, just as long as you don’t mind getting your reputation—and your heart—a little dirty. Welcome to Patchwork House… two years away and one too many broken hearts, Tweetie swore off skaters—but she never expected Flip.
Flip was the most famous skater in the world until he traded his place at Patchwork with the little girl whose life he ruined. Now Tweetie’s all grown up, and one chance encounter brings them together. He knows the right thing to do is disappear before things get ugly, but he never was very good at being good.
She’s back, and so is he—all bets are off. Nothing will stop this bad boy from finally getting his lost girl. They’re written in the stars, and it’s time she knows it.
The first lesson Flip taught Tweetie was how to fall.
It was also the last thing she remembered when they met again, because she didn’t just fall for him.
She slammed.

This book was absolutely amazing. I devoured it. Could not put it down. This is such a great story and has some of the most amazing sentences in it You suck thrm up like you do the sun when summer is just beginning. tweetie and Flip are goijg to be two characters you never forget. I loved that we got taken back to 1989 too. Im a 80s girl. Being a teen then was so much fun. Big hair and neon clothes Whats not to love. Driving down main street and seeing all the boys riding their skateboards down the sidewalk or the park at the end of the street knowing they arent auppose too Whats not to love about this one Do not miss it
This was the first book I have read by Ms. Gebhard and I was not disappointed. From the beginning, I could not put this book down. It’s a slow-burn romance that teases you with little bits of information along the way. While in the end most of my questions were answered, I can’t wait for the rest of the series to answer my remaining questions. This does not end in a cliffhanger for the couple. Flip, a fourteen-year-old, feels this natural connection with Raegan, a nine-year-old, at a skatepark. When he sees her bright big blue eyes, and her crazy, curly, blonde hair, he calls her Tweetie. From there on the name sticks. Through tragedy and some unfortunate circumstances, Tweetie ends up homeless with no family. That’s when she finds Patchwork, where King is the boss. Years later King acts like Tweetie’s big brother and is extremely protective of her. While Flip, although drawn to Tweetie, stays in the background. I loved how strong, yet innocent Tweetie was. She knew what she wanted and stuck to her guns. Flip is the sweetest, most engaging young man I have ever read about. The selfless things that boy did for the love of his life are amazing. At first, I was hesitant about starting this book, but I am so glad I did. Mary Catherine Gebhard is a wonderful storyteller and drew me in from the first chapter. It may take place in the ’80s and make you think about punk skateboarders, but on the way, your heart will melt and be a gooey mess for this entire Patchwork crew. A truly, stupendous read!
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
A 9 year old , curly haired blue eyed girl goes to a skate park and her whole life changes. Tweetie, affectionately nicknamed by the skater boys she meets, suddenly finds herself orphaned. Until they become her family. Secrets shroud how every thing went down and secrets are kept. As time goes on, Tweetie meets a boy. But does she really know the boy?
This was an original story with some really great characters. I love the concept of the Patchwork house and creating a family for those who need a place to belong. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Skater Boy is the story of 19 year old Tweetie, a girl who grew up in the male dominated world of skateboarding. She became an orphan at the age of 9 and then moved into a house called Patchwork House. Patchwork was a place for misfits and outcasts, controlled by the Rebel Gods (King, Romeo, and Daniel). They took her in when she was living on the streets at 10 years old and after being gone for 2 years, she has now returned home. When she arrives she meets 24 year old Flip, the worlds best skateboarder who suddenly stopped staking years ago. Flip is an original Rebel God but that information is kept from Tweetie, along with the fact that she and Flip have an intertwined past. You see the relationship and feelings grow between Flip and Tweetie, despite King trying to stop it at every turn. My only issue is that it did not feel like the characters acted their age. It felt like they were all in their mid-teens. Otherwise, I really did enjoy this book and will read the other Patchwork House books.
I received a free copy of Skater Boy for an honest review
“It says Always your shadow, Tweetie. Always. Even when I knew I shouldn’t be there for you, I was. Because you saw me, Tweetie. The real me.”
Welcome to the small town of Heaven Falls, a community full of rules and little tolerance, which houses in a forgotten part and that no one attends the infamous Patchwork House, home to the degenerate, homeless and misunderstood. A residence controlled with iron hands by its four original founders: King, Flip, Daniel and Romeo, known as Rebel Gods. Four young people with different histories and pasts, but who seek the same goal: freedom.
All was well, until a little girl with attitude and love for skate crossed the path of these four. And after an unfortunate accident, deals are made, secrets are kept and this rebellious guys become responsible for the well-being of this girl. All but one, Flip, who by now was a renowned skateboarder, and who turns out to be the shadow of Tweetie, always hidden, never seen.
As the years pass, now grown up, it is increasingly difficult to keep Tweetie and Flip from approaching, and the agreement made so many years ago may be about to surface.
This book was very different from everything I read. Transiting through a world unknown to me, the skaters, the story merges mystery, drama and a bit of romance. King is the leader of Patchwork House, but the fact that he comes from a wealthy family, who is willing to do anything to get him back, creates mysterious situations and opens up many questions that will leave the reader curious for answers.
Tweetie has long been in search of Nate, her first love, without even imagining that he is closer than she imagines. Flip, her idol, is the boy she seeks, but the extent of his estrangement and the degree of the secrets that unite them may be too much for her.
Daniel and Romeo also have their own stories, although they did not have so much prominence in this first volume. Each founding member will have his own book, which further increases the curiosity of the reader.
Overall it was a good experience, out of the comfort zone, accompanying a bunch of young people with a somewhat questionable lifestyle, who do not accept the rules of society and make their own rules. It caught my attention.
*ARC provided in exchange for an honest Review *
Tweetie was the only girl allowed inside the Patchwork House and she first moved in when she was 9 years old after her dad died. She briefly left but now she is back wanting to come back in but there is someone else in there now.
Flip is a famous skateboarder who has recently given it all up but nobody knows why. Yet his heart belongs to someone that it shouldn’t due to events of the past where he blames himself.
As Tweetie and Flip begin a flirtatious friendship it’s clear Flip wants more but King, who started Patchwork House, wants the two as far away from each other as possible.
When the truth comes out will Tweetie be able to forgive Flip and when she learns the truth about everything in the past can love survive?
This was a super interesting book with a lot of undertones that set the book down a unique path.
My heart broke for Tweetie and what she lost at the beginning and how she found herself on the streets at such a young age but Flip insisted that the boys of Patchwork house take her in, no matter what it cost him. It was kind of eerie how much he was there watching her but at the same time it almost felt like a bodyguard as he really felt some connection to her that transcended everything.
Flip gave up so much for Tweetie and in turn had to do a huge favor for King. I was super curious about King’s own relationship with his family and I am really hoping in the next book we look more at his family life.
I understood the guilt that Flip had with Tweetie and where it came from and I liked that King recognized what Flip stood to lose when he himself made a certain decision. I felt as though King held that over Flip’s head a lot though.
I really enjoyed Flip and Tweetie’s relationship from almost strangers to so much more. I loved how protective Flip was over Tweetie and how she began to trust him more and more. I felt bad for Tweetie when she began to put certain pieces together and blamed herself for things Flip no longer did.
I found there was so much animosity between Flip and King and I feel like there is so much more to the story that we haven’t got to yet and should be coming in the next book!
This was a great introduction to the series and I eagerly wait for the next book! – By Rebecca
4.5/5 stars! Talk about the slowest burn of the year!!! I wasn’t sure if I was going to get my HEA with how this book dangled the carrot in front of me chapter after chapter! But wow, what a read it was! This was my first experience with this author and I’m so glad I signed up to review this book! The blurb caught my attention as something a little different from the normal “sports romance”. It certainly did not disappoint!!!
First off, this read is FULL of technical terminology around the sport and sometimes gets into the weeds when it comes to detailed descriptions of the art of skateboarding. But don’t let that deter you from the true story of young love and friendship.
The nicknames in this book were fun and playful. Who couldn’t love characters like Tweety and Flip?!?
I cannot even being to describe my swooning for Flip. He was what true romance heroes are all about! He cared far more about others than himself and basically threw his entire future away to protect those he loved. He proved his loyalty and dedication time and time again in this read.
Due to the bouncing back and forth of past and present timelines, this read did become a little chaotic at times. It was somewhat hard to follow due to the concealed identity of characters through out the book.
I loved the empowerment this read shined on Tweety and her career path. The fact that she was one of a kind in the Patchwork House and the boys recognized and harnessed that made my heart sing. She was one of the guys but fiercely protected like a little sister. Regardless of how she ended up in the house, the men in her life were all dedicated to her success.
This read was full of secrets and suspense. It seemed like nothing was as it seemed. I was so fearful for the fallout, when the truth was finally brought to light. I loved how the story kept me guessing and on the “edge of my seat”. You just had to hang on and trust that the author had a plan and would get you to the end in one piece! And wow did she! The ending left me smiling and my heart pitter pattering.
I heard a lot about this book in my groups, how good it was, so I decided to check out this “new to me” author for myself. Am I glad I did! I loved this book, and now will be reading more of Ms Gebhard’s books!
The misfits who live at Patchwork House have a “no girls” rule that is broken the night after a tragedy that changes their lives and they bring Tweetie to live with them. Three rebel gods run the home and become Tweetie’s family. Another exiled god, Flip, is always in the shadows, watching out for her. There are so many secrets abounding and Tweetie and Flip’s relationship is a series of twisting pathways that go from the past to the present in the telling of this story . Dual POVs help clarify.
The angst in this book is over the top! I LOVE angst! I felt Tweetie’s insecurity and pain. I hurt for Flip every time he had to walk away. And the other rebels, King, Daniel, and Romeo, were all fighting their own demons, yet were all so close and took care of each other and the younger kids at their house. If course, Tweetie was their top priority. The connection between Flip and Tweetie could not be denied, no matter how much Flip and the others tried to discourage it. And there was always the love between the 4 guys, broken as it was at times. I was very happy with the way the book ended.
This book was unputdownable and I am looking forward to the next book about King! FIVE FLIPPING STARS!
Skater Boy is my first read by Mary Catherine Gebhard and it was everything. All the feels wrapped up in one book. I absolutely fell in love with Tweetie and Flip. From page one I was completely sucked in. If I didn’t have a day job, I would have read it in one day. Tired eyes this morning from staying up until midnight but it was worth every word. So beautifully written I nearly highlighted the whole book. Definitely one of my top reads this year! LOVE!!!
“You can’t tell a shadow to leave. Even if the shadow is bad, even if the shadow ties you to a past best forgotten.”
Skater Boy is a stunningly written angst fest from start to finish, a mysterious slow burn that stole my heart and kept it beating ruthlessly through every painful emotion.
Mary Catherine Gebhard’s writing is eloquent and emotive and I simply could not put this book down. I am obsessed and I can’t wait for the next Patchwork book.
Q: She was spring. She was light. She was forbidden fruit I promised myself I would only taste, not bruise or bite. As she trembled like I knew she would, I knew I wouldn’t let go. I couldn’t.
Skater Boy is my first book by Mary Catherine Gebhard and I was definitely impressed. Skater Boy was simply outstanding. I loved the sweet, sexy, angsty story and absolutely can. not. wait. for more books in the Patchwork House Series.
Q: They were the Rebel Gods of Heaven Falls, and their religion was sin, debauchery, and corruption…and they were worshipped as they should be.
Q: We weren’t villains; we were outsiders.
As a blogger, I have gotten introduced to so many new authors over the last 3 years. And Mary Catherine Gebhard is definitely one that I am grateful I had the opportunity to discover. I can’t wait to find more of her stories to read. As for Skater Boy, I have so much that I loved about this dual POV, YA sports romance. The characters really grabbed my attention. Flip and Tweetie have the most amazing chemistry and the sweet, sexy, slow burn romance that Mary Catherine Gebhard delivered was undeniably entertaining. But it wasn’t just Flip and Tweetie that stole my heart. The other three boys that make up the Patchwork House rebels—the Rebel Gods, outsiders who started a house for other outsiders to call home—King, Daniel, and Romeo are immensely intriguing. And while my blog schedule is always packed, I have every intention of stalking this author daily so that I can get a jump on the release of any of their stories. Not going to lie, while I understand the next book will be for King, there is something about Daniel has me beyond enthralled and I desperately want his story. I love that authors are starting to include skateboarding as the sport of choice in their stories. I am not personally a skater, but I see the skill it takes, and the sport has fascinated me for some time. So, reading books that include skateboarding as the sport of choice, is a fun twist to some of the books within this trope. Skater Boy was well written and readers are going to love it. As a blogger, I pride myself on honest reviews, and that’s truly the only reason I am going to mention the next bit. While Skater Boy was an excellent story, one I have every intention of reading again, it was not without minor concerns. I felt the story was a little slower paced and the flow was slightly skewed at times with some rough transitions. Regardless, the average reader is unlikely to notice such issues, and the storyline of Skater Boy kept me very intrigued regardless of the pace and flow. And while I mention these, they held little sway in my ranking of the story.
Quotes:
When I saw her, all of my self-control, what was left of my morals, go haywire. I’d only ever done one right thing. Years ago when the accident happened, I moved out of Patchwork and forced King and the guys to bring Tweetie in. I stayed away. Then, one chance encounter brought me back. I became her shadow. It wasn’t until age sixteen that I started to see her differently. I fought it; of course I fought it. Tweetie was the little girl I taught, the little girl we saved. But when she was a few weeks from eighteen, I fell. Hard…
I love you. I’m so fucking in love with you. It’s ripped me apart since you were a teenager. It will continue to rip me apart. I just don’t want it to rip you apart too.
Flip was my everything, but he should have had everything— been everything.
I couldn’t leave, but if I stayed, I couldn’t have her either. I was fucked in the head. Possessive of a girl I’d started to want when she was sixteen, a girl I’d started to need when she was seventeen, and a girl I’d fallen head over heels for when she was barely eighteen.
Words, I have no words for how good this book is. Flip and Tweetie are two beautifully broken people who keep getting pulled back together by their very own magnet of love. Mary Catherine Gebhard is a word master, conveying so many emotions, so many questions and so much love. Skater boy is a love story of epic proportions that will make you believe in the power of forgiveness and love. This is a must read!
Besides a completely adorable and stunning cover that is seriously unique, Skater Boy is an amazing read. If you’re like me and have never read Mary Catherine Gebhard than Skater Boy is the perfect book to start with. MCG is a fascinating author. I wasn’t too sure when I started the book and it starts right in the midst of action and I have no idea what is going on or who is who. However, I surprised myself by diving in and digging the different method of writing. Really, it was, shockingly, nice to not have everything laid out for me.
I was so sure Tweetie was going to be my girl… and she was… but Flip, well he stood above and beyond with just who he was. Perhaps it was because this book took me back to the late 80s, early 90s when my first real boyfriend went skateboarding and always did these flips and tricks and I remember the fascination from watching him. It made me reminisce and think fondly on the past. Anyway, Tweetie is crazy strong female lead. She’s fierce and loyal and when she lives, she’s all in. Flip is just what we all want in out book boyfriends. He’s sexy AF, he’s a bit of an alpha and comes off pretty hard. Dont let the prickly exterior get to ya, he’s all soft and sweet… and when he loves, Flip is all in. Feet first!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… my opinions.
I absolutely love discovering authors that even though they aren’t new, they are new to me. When I read the synopsis, I just knew that this book was right up my alley.
Anything with young adults whether they’re still in high school or college, the storyline always seem to captivate me to the fullest.
The premise to this book had me intrigued and I loved the characters. They were all very unique in their own way and the whole concept of who they were and where they came from.
Slow burns aren’t really for me, but this one didn’t even feel like it because I was so wrapped up in the storyline that it didn’t bother me that the chemistry was there but it seemed like it took them FOREVER to finally do something about it.
This series is going to be one that I am definitely going to continue reading because all these boys intrigue me to the fullest and I need to read their stories.
M.C. Gebhard did an amazing job with this book and I can’t wait to read more wonderful words from this author.
The Rebel Gods, Tweety, Flip, The Patchwork house, oh man! I was invested in this book, I couldn’t put it down, there where some parts that had me a bit confused but I got passed them and is slow burn…. and i mean It!
When I stared this book, I kind of dived in blind, I didn’t know what to expect, but this sure exceeded my expectations. The angst, the love, the fun, and the diversity of the characters make this story unique and fun to read.
Very entertaining, good flowing story. I know this review is a bit vague, but seriously is so worth to go in blind. Great read.
4 Flipping Stars!!
I wanted to read this book because of the name. Mary Ctherine Gebhard is a new author for me and I did not know what to expect with this book I enojed this book about Twittie and Flip and there story Held my interest
I can’t wait for the next books in this series,
“They were the Rebel Gods of Heaven Falls, and their religion was sin, debauchery, and corruption…and they were worshiped as they should be.”
Skater Boy was my first book by Mary Catherine Gebhard and she wooed me right of my couch while I was reading this great story. At first I kept thinking “It totally feels like I have read this before” and tried to think of a book that might have had the same or similar story line. But I came up empty. Now I keep thinking that this book was made for me to read and the feeling that I know this book already is more like a déjà vu and this totally makes me smile.
“She was spring. She was light. She was forbidden fruit I promised myself I would only taste, not bruise ore bite.”
As light as this story might come across at first, this is just the surface. Beneath is so much more. Charged with troubled souls, self-doubt, insecurities, remorse emotions on every level. I enjoyed every minuted I spend with all these beautiful characters and can’t wait to read more of them! I fell in love with them. No, I actually slammed.
“”I’m going to put the awe back in your eyes,” he said, and my breath caught. “You looked at me like I was a god once, and you’ll do it again.””
Skater Boy is an exciting story about forgiveness, surviving and falling in love all the way while growing up. A fantastic introduction into the world of Patchwork House and its Rebel Gods.
“Love was messy. Love was complicated. You took a leap and you hoped you didn’t slam.”
A good start to the Patchwork series. Mary is a new to me author, and I look forward to reading more by her. An angst filled read!
There is a slow burn between Tweetie and Flip. Just as something is about to happen between them, something or someone puts a halt to it. This secret being kept is what makes Flip keep his distance, and he holds back.
I love the mingled chapters of past and present. Flip and Tweetie form a connection early on through skateboarding, and an event starts this whole secret, and changes the course of Flips life.
The further I read the more I got to know the characters and the world started to form. The push and pull between Flip and Tweetie kept me wanting more. Also, I love the dynamic of the Patchwork, the family that has formed between Tweetie, Flip, King, Daniel, and Romeo. Very well written, and I look forward to King and Pips story.
“I was fucked in the head. Possessive of a girl I’d started to want when she was sixteen, a girl I’d started to need when she was seventeen, and a girl I’d fallen head over heels for when she was barely eighteen.” – Skater Boy by Mary Catherine Gebhard
Guys, this book is so good. Love slow burn romance? Do. Not. Look. Any. Further. Skater Boy will blow your mind. Tweetie (love that name) is a super amazing and inspiring, a truly badass heroine, and The Rebel Gods? OMG. Oh. My. God. I can’t wait to read their stories. Tweetie and Flip are so perfect together. Girls get ready, Flip, Daniel, Romeo and King will steal your heart. It was my very first book by this author, but definitely not the last. I’m (impatiently) waiting for the second book in the Patchwork House series. I can tell you that this book is absolutely amazing and I can highly recommend it to you. I’ll add the blurb to comments, make sure to check it out, it really made me want to read it. And the cover too!! OMG I almost forgot to mention it. JUST HOW GORGEOUS IT IS??? OMG I am obsessed with this cover. So unique, I love it. Can’t wait to see the covers of the next books.
4,5 stars.
Totally different read from MCG but I fricking loved it!
Magnificent storytelling.
It’s about self discovery, understanding, acceptance and love.
I’m blow away at how much I enjoyed this book. This was primarily about Tweetie and Flip.
You do get the backstory and bits about all the Rebel Gods..just enough to tease you. I can’t wait for more.
This series is going to phenomenal.
