Charley Davidson–part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper–returns in the New York Times bestseller, Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones. Sometimes I wrestle my demons. Sometimes we just snuggle.–Bumper Sticker Most girls might think twice before getting engaged to someone like Reyes Farrow–but Charley Davidson is not most girls. She’s a paranormal private eye and grim … most girls. She’s a paranormal private eye and grim reaper-in-training who’s known to be a bit of a hell-raiser, especially after a few shots of caffeine. Her beloved Reyes may be the only begotten son of evil, but he’s dark and sultry and deeply sexy and everything Charley could hope for. Really.
But when the FBI file on Reyes’ childhood happens to land into her lap, she can’t help herself: She opens it…and then the real fun begins. First, Charley finds a naked corpse riding shotgun in her car. Then, a man loses his soul in a card game. Throw in a Deaf boy who sees dead people, a woman running from mobsters, and a very suspicious Reyes, and things can’t get any worse for Charley. Unless, of course, the Twelve Beasts of Hell are unleashed…

The storyline in this series is original and the humor is perfect! The romance between Charly and Reyes can’t be beaten—and the supporting characters ? Well, the books would not be the same without them! I am listening on audiobook the second time around; even more fun than the first.
The Charley Davidson series has become my guilty pleasure — steamier than I normally prefer, but I can’t seem to walk away from the humor. So few authors do humor well that I can’t seem to abandon the ones who do (even if it means having to skim a few pages).
Like her previous books, this episode of Charley Davidson sees her confront bad guys, fight with Reyes, make-up with Reyes, battle the forces of evil (heavenly and on earth), and rise above it all. And she does it all with little seriousness and some disrespect — except when it comes to the departed. This series continues to amaze me in how I’m laughing one minute and heartbroken the next. The character may take things lightly, but it comes across as a bit of a defense mechanism because she’s also forced to confront some truly horrid situations.
Worth noting: I love this series, but that doesn’t mean I agree with her interpretation of the spiritual realm (I don’t) or that I condone everything that happens in the book (I don’t). I do think, however, that Jones is a brilliant storyteller, so the writer/editor in me has to keep reading.
I will say there were a few of things that irked me about this book (hence the 3-star rating instead of 4-star):
1. I’m not a huge fan of the 12 yo girl sneaking out with the 16 yo boy. That’s just a little too young for me to be comfortable.
2. I’m not really sure why Charley keeps arguing with/refusing to answer Reyes. They do finally start talking at the end, but they keep having the same argument, which got a little old.
3. Why does every keep secrets from each other?? They all supposedly love each but also lie to each other constantly.
Overall, though, I just ate this book up — I love how Jones keeps the series going. Unlike Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, there’s constant character development and relationships keep growing and changing. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
R-rated for sex, language, and violence.
OMG!
I don’t know what it is about Reyes and Charley that completely draws me in at the same time as I want to totally SMACK him! He doesn’t tell her anything, he hides things from her and acts like she’s incompetent, and yet, loves her beyond reason. I don’t usually think of hiding things from your almost-fiance to be trusting her and how can you not trust her and still love her?
It’s been driving me completely insane this entire series.
Seriously.
But he’s still hot. I love the addition of the Dealer. It shakes things up a bit, doesn’t it?
Onward to the next one!
It’s Book 6 and I’m still loving Charley, Reyes, Cookie, and all the other characters – both old and new.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
This was a fantastic story! Charley is finally starting to discover what she can do, and as usual it seems like everything repeatedly goes south! The ending was great, and I can’t wait to see what waits for me in the next book! Thank you for the opportunity to review this gem!
I am so glad I got into this series. However, I sit before you with a MASSIVE book hangover, yet again!
Sixth Grave on the Edge is the sixth installment in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. Like all of the books before it, it’s a sexy read full of action, suspense, and snark. Plus….REYES. *swoon*
AUDIO BOOK NOTE:
I listened to the audio book for this title and, once again, it was narrated by the ever-awesome Lorelei King. She’s one of my favorites to listen to, and in my head, she IS Charley Davidson. If they were to change narrators at this point, I think I would cry. And maybe riot. No, I’d definitely riot.
What I Liked:
The reason I love this series so much is the humor. Charley is full of snark and sarcasm, and it is hilarious. Her inappropriately timed jokes offer a bit of comic relief to sometimes dark story line. Sixth Grave was no exception. There were more than a few moments in this book which resulted in coffee squirting out of my nose. It wasn’t pretty, but it was so worth it.
The other thing I loved about Sixth Grave is there were a few plot twists which I totally did NOT see coming.
I also love the romantic story line in this series. Charley and Reyes have a great story. It’s not just a “will they or wont they”, it’s also a “SHOULD they or SHOULDN’T they”. He’s the son of Satan and she’s the portal to Heaven. Everything they know about that combo is not good news. As a reader, I so badly want to see them get a happily ever after, I’m just not so sure that’s going to be possible.
Charley and Reyes are not the only romantic story line anymore either, and the new story line is too damn funny. Let’s just say all is not smooth sailing right away.
Sixth Grave has soooooo many different mysteries, some span the entire book, others are quick in and out of the story. It leaves you with this sense that you’ve read more than one book, and yet, everything ties up perfectly.
What I Didn’t Like:
The only thing I struggled with in this book is Charley not trusting Reyes after everything they’ve been through. He warns her about certain things and she just seems to blow him off, like “what do you know?” It just sits funny. The dude is a bazillion years old and THE SON OF SATAN. Give him some credit.
Who I Would Recommend It To:
I would recommend this book (and the entire series) to anyone and everyone. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, a fan of comedy, or a fan of action, this book (and series) has what you need. I think the closest comparisons I can picture are the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost or the Calliope Reaper-Jones series by Amber Benson. Sixth Grave on the Edge is another win for Darynda Jones! Cant wait for the next book!
another awesome book I just love these characters and look forward to seeing what will happen next.
The sixth installment of the Charley Davidson series is still smoking hot. The backstory of Reyes is explored a bit more by Charley. Cookie gets some special attention. Then there are the paranormal cases, her ghosts to deal with, and the general chaos that surrounds this crazy world! What more can happen?
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the reader copy to review.
“Charley,” she said at last, her voice soft, full of fear, “what have you done?”
Gasp!
Oh my goodness much has happened in the world of Charley Davidson.
Because the devil lies to everyone.
They knew that.
The prophecies are clear in wording but vague in meaning.
They knew that.
The end of the world is coming.
They knew that.
But was anyone prepared for that ending?
Nope.
Another home run! Charley and the gang get busy because they have a lot on their plate.
They need to solve a mysterious prophesy, get someone’s soul back from a card game, go up against a crime lord, set Cookie up with Ubie, and soooo much more!
This series is incredible, and I’m inhaling each book. I should really start savoring each page or I’ll be in some sort of depression when I’m done with this series.
How much trouble can one person get herself into? Really? And the cliff hanger was great and terrible at the same time. Can’t miss this one with all the snark and tribulations that center around Charley. Can’t wait for the next.
Best series!
Things are really heating up. This time around we still have the humor but much more romance as well as some supernatural activities that we haven’t seen before along with the promise of more. I’ve also become a huge fan of the “crossing over” scenes. This author has such a talent to portray in a few sentences the totality of a life and all the love and joy it experienced as well as the life that never felt a moment of joy or love. Both devastated me.
I’m more in love with Reyes and we got a quick look into his point of view at the end which just added to my feelings for him. Charley and her original gang have some serious shaking up in this story and again, some of it was fun and some of it was enough to bring tears to my eyes.
It’s official. I’m completely addicted to this series and the fact that each book feels original only adds to that addiction.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another fun, sexy, thrilling and emotional adventure with Charley and the gang… Loved it! Matchmaking seams, Crazy bad guys, Not exactly sane Good Guys, Scary predictions and the future of the entire world hanging in the balance! Love how these visits to this amazing world keep my guessing from beginning to end.
OMG!!!! THAT ENDING……
OMG!!!! The ending is worth EVERYTHING!!!! I’m loving this series more and more if that is even possible. This is one of the most fantastic paranormal series I have ever read. I swear it does not disappoint. It full of suspense, mystery, laughs and when it comes to Charley and Reyes, undeniable chemistry and steamy scenes. It’s about time Ubie and Cookie figure things out and go after what they want. I’m excited to see how things turn out for them. After this review I’m starting the next book in this series and I’m so excited to read what happens.
SIXTH GRAVE ON THE EDGE is the sixth instalment in Darynda Jones’s paranormal/UF Charley Davidson series focusing on grim reaper Charlotte (Charley) Davidson. As with all of the Charley Davidson storylines we find our heroine the target of more than one being-some demonic, some corrupt, many dead but all wanting something in the end. Told from first person POV (Charley) SIXTH GRAVE advances the series but a few days.
There are several focuses in the storyline including a man who lost his soul in a game of cards and Charley’s dogged determination to uncover the truth about Reye’s past. She knows some of the ugly details of his childhood but she will set her sights on the people she believes gave birth to the Son of Satan. When Reyes demands that she stop her investigation, Charley’s inquiring mind doesn’t necessarily want to hear the story behind the story.
We will be introduced to the Dealer-a demon from Hell who knows more about Charley’s predestination than Reyes has revealed. The Dealer offers up ‘a deal’ to those in need but his price is steep and beyond what most people can pay. Charley is drawn to the Dealer if for no other reason than to learn the truth about who and what she has been ‘born’ to do.
Angel, Charley’s forever thirteen year old ghostly assistant, will have a more active role in this particular storyline. We will learn the truth about his death and the woman who wants to know if her son is still on this plane of existence. Cookie is her usual manic self-from the brains behind Charley’s PI investigations to the woman who has fallen for Charley’s Uncle Bob, Cookie is a one woman power house who plays off of Charley’s natural sarcastic banter-a perfect combination in any storyline or series.
The relationship between Reyes and Charley is imaginative, erotic and arousing-psychic sensuality is something we should all strive to achieve. Reyes is the epitome of sex; his allure is far reaching but he is intensely captivated by only one woman-a woman who was made especially for him.
Darynda Jones writes from the heart with humor, sarcasm, an astonishing concept of friendship and a brilliant mind. The Charley Davidson series is a phenomenal UF/paranormal series that focuses on a kick-a$$ heroine who knows there are limitations to her powers but has yet to reach her ordained levels prescribed in the hierarchy of all things supernatural and decreed.
Love me some Charley Davidson. Chock full of more shenanigans from Charley and her wacky band of misfit friends and relatives. Love the story of of getting Cookie and Ubie together. Hilarious!!!
Ooohhh!!! Things have gotten interesting now. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but the last page is a doozy. Can’t wait to read the next book for more Charley Davidson and her yummy Reyes Farrow.
These books are like crack-flavored potato chips. I binged the entire series in less than a month! Addicting!
