Another intriguing case for the Mystery Mastermind writer’s group! Nicole, who has been at the retreat for a short amount of time, has finally decided to open up and ask the group for help with a case. Her 16-year-old half-sister ran away from home in March of the previous year and had agreed to send Nicole a selfie each Monday to show she was okay. Nicole stopped getting selfies from Emily in May and has been searching for her ever since. The last photo was taken in front of one of the cabins at the retreat and so she is hoping the group can help her to find her sister, either alive or dead. An intriguing story that leads Jack and Jill to travel to Maine and the start of Emily’s journey and uncover even more questions. I truly enjoy these characters and the mysteries they look into. The storylines are intriguing and leave you wanting more.
I enjoyed the sixth in this series. When the half sister of a resident at the Writers Retreat disappears with her boyfriend, the resident recruits the help of the writers to help find her.
I found this to be a unique story for a cozy and totally enjoyed it with all its twists and turns. I will continue on with this series.
In this next book of the series we pick up where we left off in the previous book. Nicole who has been standoffish since arriving to stay at the writer’s retreat finally breaks down and her true reason for being there comes to light. You see her half-sister has been missing for months and Nicole has exhausted all of her leads so she turns to the writer’s group for there help. They agree to take the case and split up the different avenues each of them will take. Jill and Jack decide to start at the beginning of when the young girl decided to leave home and follow the trail she took. Along the way they learn some disturbing things and begin to wonder if Emily is still alive. Jill knows that no matter what Emily story ends up being she must find out what happen so that Nicole doesn’t spend her life not knowing. This was an exciting whodunit that had me wondering the whole way through whether they would find the clues they needed to answer just what happened to Emily.
“Sixth Cabin” earns 4/5 Suspicious Selfies…Engaging Fun!
Nicole Carrington’s childhood was very difficult. Along with being placed in foster care at age twelve, she later discovered her mother had remarried, had another child, and seemed unwilling to reunite. Nicole made efforts to move on, and when she happened to connect with her half-sister, she realizes she herself may have had the better life. Sixteen-year-old Emily Halliwell decides to leave her troubled home life behind, run away with her boyfriend, but agree to keep in touch with Nicole every week by emailing a selfie. Everything was fine for a couple of months until nine months ago when the selfies stopped coming. Using the last selfie, Nicole’s search for Emily has led her to Gull Island and the resort. That’s intriguing enough to get everyone on board. Where’s Emily is the new case for the Mystery Mastermind Group…
Kathi Daley once again has penned an intriguing mystery for this fan to follow. The Writers’ Retreat series is different in that the “who,” “what,” “when,” and “how” are often not in question; it is the final “why” that sends the Group seeking answers. This new journey unfolds with the “who,” but as a missing person, not much else is known. Emily’s selfies, take us on an engaging investigation retracing her steps, talking to people who remember running into her, and twists and turns. Although descriptions help to create the mental pictures, Kathi doesn’t rely solely on the narrative. She provides entertaining informal and formal conversations to piece together the missing girl’s journey as well as insights into our Gull Island residents. References to previous investigations do not give “spoilers,” and in the beginning, a bio for each main or visiting character provides background and connections. Characters and relationships are well established, but newbies can easily join in with “Sixth Cabin.” However, do not forget the rest of the series. It is intriguing and entertaining often with an “Oh my!” ending that makes it truly satisfying.
Sixth Cabin is the sixth book in the Southern Seashore Mystery series. When Emily stops communicating with her half-sister, Nicole, the search for answers begins. Can they find Emily? Will she be alive? This story sucks you in and keeps you hooked until the end. I definitely recommend it.
Nicole Carrington moved into a cabin at the resort but hasn’t been the most social of guests.
Finally she comes to the Mystery Mastermind to ask for help. She says it has taken her a while to trust that no one who lives there, at the Gull Island Writer’s Retreat, is responsible for the disappearance of her half-sister, Emily.
Emily was a sixteen year old girl from a dysfunctional home. Even being half-siblings, she and Nicole were not close, did not really commuicate well. Nicole just knows Emily is in trouble and no one else is worried or interested in looking for her. This pulls at the heart strings of the writer residents.
Emily’s presence at Gull Island took place when the resort was closed, so any trail there was is really cold. When the Mastermind begins to investigate, they have to decide how to best use their time and talents. Start from the beginning or follow any clues from Gull Island onward?
This is darker and more tense than previous book in this series. The clues add up to a trail of killings no one had associated with each other before. The outcome for Emily looks more grim with each discovery. Blackbird may have witnessed something, but how can he comunicate what he knows?
Once begun, I wasn’t going to put this book down until I had turned the last page.
As a bonus, we experience a full house at the resort, with visiting children and guests eagerl awaiting a new baby, a joyous event after some very dark days. Jack and Jill are forced to look more deeply at where their relationship is going. Some emotional and life altering decisions need discussion.
Sixth Cabin is the sixth book in Kathi Daley’s awesome Writer’s Retreat Southern Mystery series. Ms. Daley’s writing style flows smoothly at a steady pace, the characters are well rounded and affable, and the mystery is well plotted. Ms. Daley has provided readers with a clean read, filled with caring and compassionate characters, an intriguing mystery to try to solve, plus a touch of sweet romance. There are lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and guessing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Nicole Carrington, the newest resident at Gull Island Writer’s Retreat, admitted that she hadn’t been truthful when she said she’d come to Gull Island to do research for a novel and asked the group to help her find her half-sister, Emily Halliwell, who’s been missing for nine months. Nicole explained that she’d only spoken to her mother a few times since she was placed in foster care at the age of twelve; her mother had remarried and had another daughter, Emily, who she met for the first time when Emily was twelve. She explained that she didn’t know her half-sister very well, but that when the sixteen-year-old decided to run away from home, Emily called her and said she was leaving because her father was beating her and had agreed to send a weekly photo so Nicole would know she was okay. When the photos stopped coming, Nicole began to worry and was able to identify the last photograph as having been taken in front of cabin six of the old resort. Nicole told them that she’d lied and kept to herself because she hadn’t been sure she could trust them. The entire Mystery Mastermind Group agreed to look into Nicole’s case. The group diligently tries to trace Emily’s steps with the hope of bring peace to Nicole. Jill and the group have taken in Abby, a young woman they recently helped regarding the mystery surrounding the murder of her husband, and her four young nieces and nephews. Everyone is pitching in and helping Abby.
