Sixteen Civil War widows living in St. Louis respond to a series of meetings conducted by a land speculator who lures them west by promising “prime homesteads” in a “booming community.” Unbeknownst to them, the speculator’s true motive is to find an excuse to bring women to the fledging community of Plum Grove, Nebraska, in hopes they will accept marriage proposals shortly after their arrival!
… arrival!
Sparks fly when these unsuspecting widows meet the men who are waiting for them. These women are going to need all the courage and faith they can muster to survive these unwanted circumstances — especially when they begin to discover that none of them is exactly who she appears to be.

A group of Civil War widows travel to Nebraska on the promise of free homesteading land only to find they have been duped. The friendships they form and their hard work bring about a happy ending.
Loved this book. Love most everything by this author!
Fascinating story of civil war widows who came west to start new lives. So much more engaging than I expected! This would make an awesome historical mini-series; it moved like a movie for me as I was reading about each character.
Mrs. Whitson has written another suberb historical fiction book, this time about women homesteaders who came to claim their own land in the Nebraska Territory in 1871.
The author takes us through many experiences of what it was like, or may have been like, for women as they left their homes and traveled by railroad to become independent land …
I love humor. This story uses it so well and is definitely my favorite by this author. All of the different characters have such distinct voices it’s not hard to tell them apart. This is definitely a story I will probably be rereading at some point, because I enjoyed the story so much.
I really enjoyed this book. Saved to read again one day.
Very interesting book about how the West was settled after the Civil War. I loved the characters!
Fun reading. I have enjoyed all her books and look for them in selections
A fun adventure.
Enjoyable and easy to stay with until the end (which ended to soon!)
Good story hard to keep up with all the different ladies
Easy to read. The history of the women was diverse and interesting! Good read.
Another great book to read during my Summer off from work.
I enjoy Historical Fiction and this book was very good. The numerous characters and personalities were well developed. I especially enjoyed Whitson portraying the hard work of farmers in those days.
So womanly.
I really enjoyed this book and was very sad when I finished.
Great story with wonderful characters . My only complaint would be that there isn’t a book 2 to continue on with these characters .
Loved it!!
Loved this book – it was one that I didn’t want to put down.
A good clean book about brave women making a new way in a sometimes harsh world. Enjoyable read!
