These young characters are battered and torn at an early age, giving them the feel of people who are much older. Their experiences with surviving in a tough world have wisened them to an unforgiving life, yet there’s always that little spark of hope and humanity, and love.
An unexpected motley crew. Very engrossing story.
With the introduction of jurda parem, a very powerful drug/stimulant that makes the already powerful Grisha even more powerful and dangerous, a race to control this drug and its maker ensues.
Kaz Brekker “Dirty Hands” the “Bastard of the Barrell” and a lieutenant in the gang called “The Dregs,” is commissioned to recover Bo Yul-Bayur the inventor of jurda parem from the Ice Court in Fjerda where he is being held captive. He puts together a rag-tag team to penetrate the the unpentrable. Thirty million kruge is just too much to pass up.
I loved this book! It is told from all the different character’s perspectives, and covers not just what they are doing right then, but also their pasts. There is a lot of back story, which adds so much depth to each character and their journey. It is a really interesting way to weave the story.
This is the second series I have read by Leigh. While I liked the Grisha Verse series, this was SO MUCH better. I think Leigh has grown a lot as a writer.
I’ve given this book two tries and it’s just not for me. (Read 1st 100 pages).
What can I say about this work of literary genius?! Original just doesn’t even scratch the surface. My favorite stories are those where the creator’s talent for world building rests on a level of excellence that’s all its own. I’ve enjoyed losing myself in many such worlds but I’ll say few have been as exquisitely crafted as Leigh Bardugo’s world in “Six of Crows”. The cast was stellar-every character felt like a main character, every scene drew me deeper into this unforgiving and provocative realm. Adventurous, suspenseful, bewitching, passionate…I could go on, but I’ll end by urging you to get lost in this book. Final note-for those of you who don’t read YA, do yourself a favor and stop allowing labels to determine your reading selections. Bardugo boasts a superb and highly entertaining writing style that will hook you the moment you flip past the title page. Okay I’m done trying to convince you…I’m headed for book two “Crooked Kingdom”
Amazing!!!
my kid really enjoyed
I felt like this series was even slower moving than the Grisha series. But I still enjoy Leigh Bardugo’s writing. Her world building is so inventive.
3.5 stars. I loved The Grisha trilogy, so I had really high hopes for this one. It took forever for me to get into it, though – it wasn’t until nearly halfway through the book, when the crew heads off to Fjerda, that it really pulled me in.
