The jumble of emotions I had when reading this affecting story about Micky, a mother who lost young Molly, her only child in a car crash caused by husband David, was so intense that I could only read it in spurts with a Kleenex box by my side.
The description of Micky at Molly’s grave on the six-month anniversary of her death broke my heart. The loss of David later adds to the unbearable pain. How do people survive such trauma?
But Micky has a strong support system that keeps her going and an inner strength that enables her, ultimately, to make a new life with purpose and love.
This beautifully written story mixes grief recovery with mystery and romance. At times, I found myself wanting a quicker resolution and wished for the crazy characters to settle down so Micky could get on with life. But loss is loss and life is messy, so I let go of the wish to control pace and fell headlong into the tale again.
A stellar fiction debut for Cincinnati author Mona Sedrak.
