‘I keep feeling like I’m being watched – dropping the boys off at school, choosing wine at the supermarket – but when I turn around there’s nobody there…’When single mother Darcy’s son falls from a rope bridge at a local playground, life stands still. She clutches his small, limp body, frozen, until a pair of strong hands push her aside, and she watches as George, a local doctor, saves her son’s … doctor, saves her son’s life.
George is a single parent too, and with his twinkling hazel eyes, easy charm, and lack of wedding band is almost too good to be true, but coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes dinner, and soon they can’t go an evening without seeing each other. When he invites her to move into his beautiful home with its sprawling garden for her boys, Darcy doesn’t hesitate.
But as Darcy is settling in, she receives a bunch of flowers with a chilling message. George says they’re from an obsessed ex-girlfriend, Opal, and days later Opal turns up at Darcy’s son’s football match. She claims to have shocking information that could threaten George’s custody of his daughter.
Darcy doesn’t know who to trust, but she’s starting to suspect that, whatever the truth, she might have put her beloved boys into terrible danger …

A twisting, turning thrill-ride!
Single mother, Darcy, is on the road to recovery after the devastating betrayal and loss of her husband. She spent time in rehab while her inlaws cared for her young children, but now she has them back and is looking forward to a fresh start.
Until a frightening incident on the playground makes her realize she’s not as strong as she thought. A handsome doctor arrives in time to save her asthmatic son and leaves a lasting impression on Darcy.
Fate steps in and brings the single parents together. A new romance blossoms against her inlaws wishes and the two move in together. Instead of the happily-ever-after, secrets unfold as a stalker from George’s past makes threats and the woman Darcy’s husband was having an affair with makes a reappearance.
This book has more twists and turns than a roller-coaster, and while I felt bad for Darcy and all she was going through, I had a hard time connecting with her. She has a few issues of her own and left me wondering just how stable she actually was.
Overall, this is a well-written mystery that kept me guessing. I give Single 4 lovely kisses!
“I voluntarily read an ARC of this book which was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.”
Excellent Read—-Couldn’t put it down! Didn’t disappoint!
No doubt about it, this was one extremely twisted thriller. I lost count of the number of hints, red herrings, and turns the plot took. I liked how the author kept me guessing; just when I thought I knew what was happening, there was another twist that took the action in a totally different direction or threw different light on an event. Even the flashbacks were part of the subterfuge for the truth of the matter (that will make sense if you read the book – which you should!) And the little children shall save them: gripping suspense!
Wow! Author K.L. Slater really knows how to create an enthralling drama! Family conflict, secrets by the bushel and mental health issues piled on to test a young mother and the three precious children in her life. The writing is top-notch, fast moving and compelling. And young Harrison, Kane and Romy, the center of it all, in their childish innocence, just the rays of light to keep the story from growing too dark as adult cruelty, jealousy, obsession, revenge and fear play out around them.
My first time reading a book by Slater, it will not be the last.
Thanks to publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Ooohh. That was really, really good. For a while I wasn’t sure what to think or who to believe. Somehow everybody in this book was hiding something and was a little sketchy. In true K.L. Slater fashion this story has twists and head games and it’s scary good. Five stars and highly recommended.
Single mom Darcy Hilton is trying to rebuild her life after her husband’s unexpected death. When she meets George, a single father, and doctor, she immediately finds herself falling for him. But as their relationship progresses, bizarre things start happening and she becomes convinced that George’s ex-girlfriend is stalking her. George doesn’t seem very bothered by what’s happening to Darcy, leaving her to wonder if she’s made a huge mistake by trusting him. This book drew me in right from the first page. The plot is gripping and nicely paced. The author does a fantastic job of building the tension and making you question Darcy’s sanity. I see that I’m in the minority here, but I really liked Darcy. I admired her for keeping her cool in the midst of all the crazy things that were happening around her. I was genuinely worried and concern for her and the boys, and was angry at her in-laws for being so controlling. I was rooting for her even when it becomes obvious that she was keeping secrets from us. The last 25% of the story was unpredictable and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were some twists that I liked and some I didn’t really care for. Overall I didn’t love this book but I didn’t hate it either. I really liked K.L. Slater’s writing style and will check out more of her books. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Darcy has had a few rough years. Her husband died four years ago and she went into a mental spin. For a while her in-laws had custody of her two young boys while she got the help she needed.
She’s now doing much better, her boys are happy and she’s managing. When a health emergency happens to one of her sons, she meets George … a local doctor who saves the boy’s life.
One thing leads to another and the two of them go from coffee dates to Darcy’s moving in with him and his young daughter. They have a lot in common … both their spouses have died and left them with young children to raise… they enjoy doing things together and a total family.
The other thing they have in common … they each have a stalker.
So who is following Darcy, taking pictures and sending them to her? Is it “his” stalker .. or “her” stalker? Throw in Darcy’s in-laws who hate the idea of her being with someone other than their son … George’s cook/maid/sometimes nanny … or maybe a patient that has a grudge against the doctor? It could be anyone … even someone closer.
Darcy doesn’t know who to trust, but she’s starting to suspect that, whatever the truth, she might have put her beloved boys into terrible danger…
I was totally absorbed in this psychological offering. Characters are spot on, deftly defined. The story is cleverly crafted with twists and turns along the way with an unpredictable ending.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Lies, deceit, and delusion are at the heart of this psychological thriller … but, most of all, obsession and stalking. What causes it, what motivates it, what twists and warps it. SINGLE is my first book by this author, and it begins strongly with an intriguing setup and a foreboding sense of not having a full grasp on the facts. Initially, the POV of the story and reader sympathy is with heroine Darcy and her unfortunate circumstances. Gradually, as things unfold, there are other viewpoints that only deepen the mystery of events and make us question the reliability of any of them.
The convolution of lies, deceptions, obsession, and stalking was quite clever, but ended up shortchanged by a rushed ending and overly talky explanations that did far more “tell, than show”, and wrapped up a bit too compactly. There was so much more to know about the warped agenda of one character, in particular, and ending with a few more questions than answers left me unsatisfied. The end result was a mostly enjoyable thriller, but the way it unfolded did not do it maximum justice. Still, I’m intrigued to read more of this author’s work.

Single by K.L. Slater
This book was a wonderful psychological thriller full of twists and turns. A chance meeting. A chance at love for both of them. Or so it seems.
There is a saying, “What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” Deception is a thin thread that is very delicate and grows thinner with the weight of each lie, each interference and each attempt to control. The author draws you in and with the character’s back stories, but is it really their own? Are we all just pawns in someone else’s game?
Your past can come back to haunt you. Not everyone has your best interest at heart. Who do you trust and for how long?
Strap yourself in for a wild ride on this rollercoaster of deception and betrayal.
You won’t want to put this book down.
Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Single is a book you can sit down with and tune out the world.
A good read with twists and turns that keeps you turning the pages.
Everyone has a secret , some more than others.
Who can you believe, who can you trust?
Everyone looks at everyone else suspiciously.
Not as straightforward as you might think!
Great read !
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read Single . Don’t miss it.
This is one of those books that grabs you from page one and keeps you in suspense until the end of the book. Darcy and Joel had 2 boys and then he died. Darcy had mental issues and lost custody of her kids for a while to her in-laws but eventually gets them back. Her son, Kane, had an asthma attack and was saved by passerby, Dr. George Mortimer. Darcy is attracted to the doctor and contacts him for coffee to thank him. From here, the story takes many twists, turns and a very surprising ending. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this fantastic read in exchange for an honest review.
Single will grip you right from the start, leaving you unsure of which way to turn. What would you do to protect your sanity? Your children? Having never been in this particular situation, it’s hard to say. One thing’s for sure, K.L. Slater has provided, without a doubt, a 5-star quality read!
I was hooked right from the prologue. We meet Darcy, a single mother to two young boys just trying to do the best she can in an impossible situation. She’s forever thankful for the support received from her in-laws in the aftermath of her sons’ father’s death. So thankful that she’s willing to ignore their overbearing ways out of respect for that support.
Years later Darcy ends up falling hard and fast for the charming off-duty doctor and single father George who saved her youngest son’s life after a mishap on a rope bridge. Not long after they’re combining families. Now they’re a seemingly happy couple who vacation with their three kids and live in a beautiful house, with a housekeeper. What more could one want?
Soon things start to go downhill as Darcy learns of George’s obsessive ex, Opal. Is she the one sending funeral flowers, vandalizing her car and following their every move? Just how far might she go?
Some might say that what Darcy and George share is love at first sight, others may say it was simply a case of the wrong time, wrong place. I personally think they fell a little too fast for comfort. Isn’t this often the case with charming, deceiving partners though? Slater lets you be the judge as she takes you on a whirlwind adventure with psychological thrills you never could’ve imagined.
I’ll admit, I went into this story thinking that I had it all figured out. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong. Sure, a few details panned out the way I thought (i.e. the picture-perfect new boyfriend not being so perfect), but mostly I was thrown for a loop at every twist and turn. This author’s way with words and ability to flawlessly switch between characters kept me swiping away at my Kindle. I was anxious to get to the bottom of the story. I needed answers and oh did I get them!
I recommend this book to anyone looking for an edge of your, seat stay-up-all-night read. Why? Because the suspense was just that good and I did just that!

K.L. Slater is a master of the psychological thriller Her latest, Single, is no exception. You are enthralled from the beginning and as the layers and lies unfold, you are hauled along a twisted journey culminating in an explosive finish. Full of twists and turns, Single is a compulsive read!
KL Slater knocks it out of the park with this novel by offering a narrative that is anything but ordinary for the genre. The book outright challenges the reader with all its moving parts. Narrative shifts, fluid plot lines, multidimensional characters. It is chocked full of lies, betrayal, and cleverly disguised truths. Not only was this book unexpected but it was a refreshing change of pace. Absolutely loved it. 5 stars!
