Picked this audiobook up to listen to as Julie Johnstone is one of my favorite authors. I really enjoyed the story. The connection between Maggie and Rhys was instant and strong, strong enough to cross time. Maggie was a strong woman, quite willing to do what she could for her family. Rhys wanted to protect the young woman though he pushed her to help him. With secrets, unbelievable truths, and danger surrounding them, they try to find Rhys’ mother, finding love on the way. Tim Campbell (one of my favorite narrators) did a wonderful job with the narration. I loved the transition between the Scottish brogue for Maggie and the American voice for Rhys. I recommend the story, the book, and the audio.
Julie Johnstone & Cecelia Mecca teaming up to put together a series of Highlander books is inspired! Both of them are awesome writers, together they have rocked this first book.
Time travel has always been a favorite of mine and this one catches you on the first page and will hold you enthralled to the last page. I could not stop reading.
Rhys, Modern rich man has a problem believing his father when he tells them that his mom was a time traveler. None of his 3 brothers believe it either. When he is thrown back to 1286 Scotland, he is to say the least shocked.
It just gets better from here. I cringed at some of the things he has to go through, laughed at some of the things he has to learn, some of the time I felt like crying for him. A total roller-coaster of emotions are packed in this story.
I usually don’t due time travel, but I enjoy both authors in this series. Very good story. I received an ARC of this book.
Book one in the Highlanders Through Time series a well written story with a great storyline the story flowed smoothly across the pages. I want to read the next book. Billionaire Rhys McCaim goes from 2020 back to 1286 Scotland where he meets Maggie Irvine. I enjoyed reading their story. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Rhys McCaim has been running his family’s billion-dollar shipping business for the last five years since his mother disappeared and his father lost his mind, speaking of his mother being jerked back into the past where she came from. With his father now in a coma from a stroke, Rhys and his three brothers break into their father’s study to find all the Gaelic documents, maps and time travel chants he has gathered. From their mother’s writings, they put together how to do it: each of the four brothers holds a part of the cross and they repeat the Gaelic chant together. Only Rhys pronounces the last word correctly and is spun into thirteenth-century Scotland leaving his brothers in 2020.
This is the best time travel book I’ve read! Yes, the hero is everything modern romance wants: rich, handsome, not a player, strong boxer, rides horses, etc. And he’s majored in Ancient Middle Age History, to boot. So he transforms well from modern businessman to a warrior from the past. And he knows how to treat Maggie, the woman he meets, to get her to help him! Yes, his mother has returned to her clan’s castle but he’ll not get there without overcoming many troubles!
I absolutely enjoyed this book. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in this genre in a while. The descriptions throughout were so clear, made me feel like I was there. Loved the suspense, magic, and twists. I’m so glad there is more coming. I can’t wait.
If you had to go way back in time to help a family member would you do it knowing you may not come back or even die? Rhys and his brothers think their father is delusional when he says their mother is from the past. When they realize it’s true, they all attempt to go back in time to find her. This story is about Rhys a no nonsense historian and executive. He meets Maggie who turns out to be the only woman he has ever loved. Will they find his mother, his brothers and get her away from her abusive betrothed? A very good time travel story to 1200’s Scotland.
Lots of twists and turns in this story. When Rhys goes back in time to find his mother, little does he know that his life will change forever. Rhys gets into trouble trying to help Margaret (Maggie) and ends up in the dungeon. How Maggie helps Rhys search for his mother, makes for an exciting storyline and keeps your interest from start to finish. I loved this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
Sinful Scot (Highlanders Through Time Book 1) by Julie Johnston and Cecelia Mecca
I ’d this timeless love story
I’m not a time travel fan however, with two great authors co-writing, how could I go wrong? I was not disappointed, quite the opposite, I’m extremely looking forward to the next book in this series!
The storyline is well written and flows seamlessly with great world and character building including a witty dialogue through two time periods. I found this story engaging, exciting, and a page turner with conspiracies, betrayal, secret alliances, and treason that spans centuries and continents. I highly recommend this historical time travel romance novel.
Happy Reading

The Highlanders Trough Time Series takes the characters from Medieval Scotland to present day New Orleans and back again. Shona MacKinnish was accidentally sent through time from thirteenth century Scotland to late twentieth century New Orleans, where she marries and raises a family. When she suddenly disappears, her husband insists she has been drawn back through time. Five years after her disappearance, her sons, using her journal and research found in their father’s study, unbelievably embark on their own time travel adventures. Will they be able to find their mother? Will they be able to find their way back to their own time?
Sinful Scot is the story of Rhys McCaim, the oldest son, and Lady Margaret Irvine. When Rhys lands in thirteenth century he meets Maggie and inadvertently incurs the anger of her rather cruel betrothed. She helps him escape (overhearing plans for his death), and they begin an interesting journey to find his clan’s home. This is a captivating story. There’s a bit of magic, a lot of drama and danger, and a blend of history that includes plots, betrayal, and a possible assassination. There is also a kidnapping, a rescue, and a very nice romance. I loved the characters (well, not the bad guys). All of them are skeptical of the time travel story, and shocked as they learn it is true. Rhys and Maggie make a strong, caring, and protective couple. I liked the way Rhys’s clan welcomes them and accepts Maggie. I enjoyed this story and happily recommend it.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
What more could you wish for in a medieval highland time travel story. This ticks off all the boxes necessary for a story that is out of this world or time. Do you want disbelief in time travel? Do you want the shock of realizing time travel is possible? Do you want action, danger and adventure? Do want to fall in love? Do you want to experience the joy of reuniting with long lost loved ones? Do you want to meet your very alive ancestors? Do you want to change history? This is one exciting book. It is definitely a page turner. You will not be bored. This ends in a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read the next installment book 2 Sexy Scot.
Ab”soul”utely loved this collaboration between Julie Johnstone and Cecelia Mecca, two of my favorite authors! Intriguing story of four son’s whose mother has dissapeared and their father who thinks she has timetravelled back to the 1200’s. Intriguing story. Wonderful characters. Lot’s of twists and turns. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
This was a good time travel romance and a fun read. I’m giving it 4.5 stars. The story flowed well and was interesting from start to finish. I liked the idea of the 1st time traveler that goes from 1286 to present & then goes back to 1286 some 20 yrs later having aged appropriately and only days have passed since she went missing. I loved the FMC and the MMC, they had great chemistry from the start. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I was given an ARC of this book and I’m leaving my review voluntarily.
Every time I get to read one of Julie Johnstone books, I am sad because I want to read more. I absolutely love the thought of what if’s. The whole book based on time travel is so wonderfully written. I literally read all night and could not put it down. Be prepared for a sleepless night. Once you start reading you won’t be able to stop. Happy Reading! This will be a great series.
I was given an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion!
Delightful Time Travel Story!
The story goes from the 1200’s in Scotland, to a family in present day. Four brothers are concerned about their father who is acting irrationally after their mother left them. He claims she is from another time and pursues ancient texts looking for a way to reconnect.
When through events one brother Rhys is sent back to his mother’s original time, he is not only a believer, but suddenly fighting for his life. The knowledge that his mother brought with her from right before she passed through time, could change the fate of the Scots, but now will anyone believe him??
Loved the historical aspects. The political turmoil and gender inequalities are handled realistically, despite that it seems romance can bloom in any time. Can’t wait for more in this series!
**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
This book hooked me from the get-go. I’ve read plenty of book by Cecelia (although this is my first by Julie) and have to say that I love the fact that she is delving into new genres. She has an extensive knowledge of Medieval times and that shows in her writing. I love how this book series is incorporating some real history along with a supernatural element (time travel). I am looking forward to reading the next three books in the series.
Present day 2020 billionaire Rhys McCaim doesn’t believe for one second that his mother whose been missing for three years missing is a time traveler, but his father is dying and requests his four sons find their and bring Mother to him before he dies. The sons find what their father has been purchasing and working to bring their Mother from the thirteenth-century. They decide to test out an ancient time-traveling spell to appease their dying father and Rhys is catapulted to Scotland 1286, as fate would have it he finds the perfect person to find his mother. Maggie Irvine must marry a horrifying older man to restore her family’s reputation and save her siblings from lives of misery. Maggie is scarred out of wits when a man suddenly appears out of thin air. Rhys convince Maggie to help him and find themselves bound by secrets and lies. Rhys knows he has the power to change history when he finds his mother. An unlikely alliance find Rhys a man out of his time and Maggie growing closer as they get closer to solving them mystery surrounding his mother’s disappearance and her sibling involvement. A captivating book of time travel, romance with a great adventure into thirteenth century Scotland. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
SINFUL SCOT by Cecelia Mecca, Julie Johnstone is the First book in the Highlanders Through Time Series. This is the story of Rhys McCaim and Maggie Irvine.
Rhys and his brothers having been trying to help their dad who health wise is not doing good but mentally their father is distressed because their mother / his wife has disappeared. Rhys’s father has told them that their mother didn’t leave willing…that she was taken back in time. Of course they don’t believe this can be true but when their father health ends up going further downhill they decided to look into this time travel theory. This is how Rhys ends up in the past to medieval Scotland and meets Maggie. Maggie because of her time period has no options but to marry someone who is awful but in turn will help her family. When Rhys just appears out of the blue they of course have a strong attraction. Maggie ends up helping Rhys which only draws them closer but danger is all around. This was a very exciting page turner read from me. I can’t wait for more from this series. I am so excited that these two great authors have come together for this series!
Wow. I loved this time travel romance by Julie Johnstone. It is the first in a new series, alternately co-written with author Cecelia Mecca and I am greatly looking forward to the next one. The premise: a close to death father who greatly wants to see his wife again who happened to disappear several years ago. Three sons who want to help their father but don’t believe his ramblings about their mother being taken back in time with a spell. They discover all the research their dad accumulated since their mother’s disappearance. The oldest son, Rhys, per his mother’s wish, is the only one who became proficient in Gaelic. When the brothers try speaking the Gaelic spell they found, Rhys is the only one who vanishes. From this point on, hang on for the ride of a rollicking good tale. Julie Johnstone has a winner here. The only let down, is the fact I’ll have to wait for the next in series to find out what happens to the other brothers. I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this work. All opinions stated in this review are my own.
An amazing fast paced journey that catapults you through time and will leave you waiting anxiously to see what happens next! With Julie Johnstone’s insight into history and creating the world of Scotland 1286, the visualization in her words made me feel I was looking down as scenes unfolded.
The first few pages are powerful and set the stage of the battles between the English and Scottish.
In the present day 2020, One of three brothers, Rhys McCaim, recites an ancient time travel spell that throws Rhys into Scotland 1286. He could not believe it and found out his father had been telling the truth about his mother and that she had traveled back years ago.
Now Rhys finds himself a Highlander and in the path of Maggie Irvine. Beautiful Maggie who is being forced to marry a terrible man to save her family. When Rhys appears before her and she finds out why he is there, everything changes. Marry the man and duty to her family? Or help the gorgeous man from the future?
I want to know the words to that spell! What an adventure and with the heartfelt words of this amazing author, I just melted. Yes I had to highlight half of my kindle and go back and read some lines and just sigh. Oh yes, sigh many times…. Calgon take me away… or rather let Julie take you away!!! Brilliant.
