He called himself Peregrine, the wanderer, and he came to London for revenge…
Like the falcon he named himself for, Peregrine is wild and free, an exotic prince who fascinates 1839 London with his wealth, mystery, and dangerous allure. He emerged from his mysterious Asiatic past to exact retribution for an appalling crime. Nothing and no one can stop him–except perhaps Lady Sara St. James, … perhaps Lady Sara St. James, whose fragile beauty conceals a gentle heart, genuine goodness, and a soul of steel.
Unable to resist his seductive charm, Lady Sara turns away from her ordered life to embrace a man she loves, but cannot fully trust. In Sara, Peregrine sees a chance for a life beyond revenge. But can he keep her without revealing his devastating secrets? Or protect her from the enemy he has vowed to destroy?

an amazing read filled with historical facts and a wonderfully unique and unusual setting. THE most in depth characterizations I’ve ever read in an historical novel. I went on to read the series and am now on the 3rd. It is a powerful book, not filled with trite characters and motivations. A must read it is fabulous an 11 out of 10 and a 6 out of 5 stars!
Great author!,,
I couldn’t finish the book. I tried and made it 3/4 way through but I finally gave up. I just didn’t like the main Male character. The book was very predictable and frustrating.
This was a combination of a novel and a sex manual. It went on and on and on.
Good story!
I enjoyed the story which was nicely written except for something that began to aggravate me and it is was the overuse of the title ‘Kafir’. Yes, there is an explanation by the author for her usage of this title, but as I’ve said before, I feel it was overused and it thus became offensive in its repetitiveness.
The plot itself is good, the characters strong and believable and I particularly liked Sara whose compassion and thoughtfulness made her an interesting character.
Peregrine (one of the names the hero is known by) has an unusual personality and at times I loved him and at others I disliked his actions.
There is a villain of course who, as the book progressed, I really began to hate. He really was not a nice person.
Overall, it was a good and interesting story.
My review above is voluntary and unbiased.
very good read
One of the best I’ve read from this author.
It is the first time I have read anything by this author. Unusual plot and well developed characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book was very different, but in a good way. Peregrine’s revenge is more than understandable and as you find out more throughout the story, heart-breaking. But as with any good writing, things were far from black and white and the story kept you on your toes. The chemistry between the two characters was great and when all was said and done it was a hard-earned HEA. Overall, a great read.
Beautiful writing! Strong and compassionate characters. Enjoyed the storyline. Kept me reading straight thru till I finished. Loved it – don’t think I’ve enjoyed a historical romance like this one in a long time!
Good story…need to catch up on all Putney’s books. Relatively new to me and I’m thoroughly enjoying her books.
Just reading now!
I love the slow building of the relationship from attraction to love, it is multi-dimensional and includes disagreements!
This was the first Mary Jo Putney I’ve read. I was very impressed. There is quite a bit of suspense again and again which kept me wondering how things would work out. What lies in Peregrine’s past that he is so driven for revenge against Charles? The reader is treated to a bit of an economic thriller as Peregrine plans to ruin Charles slowly unfold. Some seedier aspects of Victorian London are shown. Some ironic turns and just deserts “served”. And all is neatly tied up at the end.
This book started off well until about the middle then it lost its appeal and then the ending just seemed to abrupt.
It seems this is a different writing style for MJP, I like the old way better…
I am disappointed but will still remain a fan!
A great trilogy
Always enjoy this author and this was a re-read. Recommend.
Interesting characters in a fascinating story
Loved the characters, found it unpredictable, & thoroughly enjoyable. A bit more sexual sizzle than necessary. I give it a 5 star rating.
Way too explicit for me.
