He called himself Peregrine, the wanderer, and he came to London for revenge…
Like the falcon he named himself for, Peregrine is wild and free, an exotic prince who fascinates 1839 London with his wealth, mystery, and dangerous allure. He emerged from his mysterious Asiatic past to exact retribution for an appalling crime. Nothing and no one can stop him–except perhaps Lady Sara St. James, … perhaps Lady Sara St. James, whose fragile beauty conceals a gentle heart, genuine goodness, and a soul of steel.
Unable to resist his seductive charm, Lady Sara turns away from her ordered life to embrace a man she loves, but cannot fully trust. In Sara, Peregrine sees a chance for a life beyond revenge. But can he keep her without revealing his devastating secrets? Or protect her from the enemy he has vowed to destroy?

I have mixed feelings about this book – the writing was very good, and I liked the characters – even the secondary characters were well developed. In fact, the whole book only stood up because of the characters, because the plot was not as interesting as I think it could have been. The author has a way with words, and I enjoyed the book, but I had problems suspending my disbelief about so many things. I will give it four stars – the writing was terrific, and I will try more books by the same author.
A great book. Lots of intregue and romance. Keeps you guessing.
This book did not have the old hack recipe of “I love him/her, but can’t tell, or conquer and love” It had an interesting plot, mystery, romance and twist to it. Very refreshing for romance novel.
Good read full of suspense and action. Love the characters.
The plot and characters were entertaining. I enjoyed the development of the story. A few twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Which was neat. Great ending as well.
I enjoyed this book Im glad there was a happy ending, I was starting to think other wise for awhile.
I loved reading this so much that I bought a 7 book series by this author!
Action-packed, Victorian, marriage of convenience, redemption romance
“He called himself Peregrine, the wanderer, and he came to London for revenge.”
Fabulously wealthy, gorgeous, and utterly mysterious Peregrine takes Victorian society by storm—including beautiful Lady Sara St. James. Though marriage had formed no part of his plans for coming to London, he simply cannot permit lovely, virtuous Lady Sara to wed the evil villain who is Peregrine’s object of long-planned revenge. Even if it mans marrying her himself.
No historical author excels as much as Ms. Putney at writing the ever-popular, redemption romance. In Peregrine and Sara we experience extremely sympathetic, multi-layered, honorable characters, and their romantic relationship evolves in fascinating and passionate ways throughout this exciting book.
Some sensitive readers may find a central topic within this book, child abuse of the worst sort, a trigger issue. But given that Ms. Putney writes historical romance with a guaranteed HEA, both for the romance and achieving justice for all crimes committed by vicious villains, gentle readers can be assured that there is a satisfyingly appropriate resolution of the central story conflict in this book involving a truly evil villain.
I first read this action-packed, historical romance when it was originally released in 1991 in mass market paperback form. I reread it multiple times over the years, and in 2017 I had the opportunity to re-purchase it in Kindle format. I had been hoping for some time that this book would eventually come out in audiobook format, and my wish finally came true. Just this past week I had the opportunity to experience it as an Audible audiobook. It is narrated by the terrific voice talent, Siobhan Waring. She has done a wonderful job acting out all the different parts with distinct voices for male and female characters of all ages. It is a delightful way to experience this classic, historical romance.

A hauntingly emotional historical romance that took me on an enthralling, action packed journey! Peregrine and Sarah are two characters that come to life so vividly on the page, that I found myself not wanting their story to end.
Oh, yes. Another great read.
What a delightful story! I was right there every step of the way. I dream of this happening to me quite a lot and this made my dream almost a reality. Thank you so much.
This author never fails to deliver a great story with truly believable characters.
Great book by one of my favorite authors, although not my favorite characters.
Disappointed I this book
Excellent… for the third time!!!
Enjoyed it
Couldn’t put it down!
Great story line… very romantic.
::CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILER::
Basically, our “hero” Peregrine was such a manipulative SoB that he bespoiled a woman he claimed to care for, and the cousin of a close friend, for no other reason than to move against somebody he wanted revenge on. It doesn’t matter that he’s “Not English”, NO culture smiles on a man attempting to ruin a Woman of Quality – meaning she’s got family who looks out for her, if for no other reason than that a “good match” means advancing the family’s interests! Not only that, it backfired on him spectacularly – which he should have known would happen….
After that scene? I (virtually) threw the book against a wall and didn’t finish it, because there was no way Peregrine could come back from that, far as I’m concerned.
Truly mind-opening, realistic with dark sexual undertones we normally do not wish to discuss. The story is most captivating with a romance to grab one’s heart. Definitely a page-turner!
The author is gifted for brilliant artistry of story telling.
