A terrific thriller. Keeps you guessing and surprised. Recommended!!
Brilliantly gripping and deliciously creepy. Make sure you clear your day as you won’t be able to put Silent Victim down!
This is my second time reading a book from Caroline Mitchell. This one is part psychological thriller and murder mystery! Throw in a sexual predator of young girls and a dysfunctional family and you have a recipe for a good story!
The main character, Emma, also deals with self image issues and bulimia! Mitchell does a great job of showing how a predator starts grooming his victims, winning them over, creating trust. It’s a sick game he plays with Emma and other girls!
The reader is drawn into Emma’s current life with glimpses of her teenage years dealing with her family and her relationship with her teacher! Many secrets are kept, past and present, with everything coming to a horrible conclusion!
Silent Victim is fast-paced, twisty, and it chilled me to the bone…I loved every minute of it!
Brilliant read with great characters, and a fantastic plot.
Loved this book, had me hooked from the start!
This book had me guessing the final plot until the very end. It never had a drag in the storyline, and constantly kept me guessing about who was truthful and what was happening. Definitely one worth reading
Awesome
An Intriguing Novel With An Interesting Plot Twist
The novel opens with a short soliloquy where Emma confesses to murdering Luke, her teacher, nine years earlier when she was a teenager. She buried him hastily on her father’s property. She has kept this a secret from her husband and family, but suffers much mental anguish and health issues. The storyline moves to 2017 where Emma is finds herself in crisis. Her husband has a promotion opportunity almost 200 miles away. He wants to sell their property and move as a family to Leeds, England. Emma needs to get rid of the corpse; it would not be good for the new owners to uncover the body. She digs where she buried Luke, but finds no corpse. She believes that Luke survived and is now stalking her. The story takes off from here with two threaded plot. One is the current timeline. The other is a flashback to her teenage years with the story of Luke and her.
The main storyline expands to encompass not only her husband and son, but brings in her sister who moved away before the murder. Suddenly, Emma is trying to juggle too many problems and mental and physical heath start to deteriorate. Her relations grow more strained. Each chapter present more twists and turns all the way to the end. I was hooked.
Much of the main storyline unfolds within the B-storyline in both timelines. Each chapter is told in the first person by one of the three main characters, Emma, Alex, her husband, and Luke. This allows the reader to see into each of these characters. This adds much depth and richness to the main B-story storylines by giving three different perspectives on what is happening in the storyline and the motivations behind their actions. Also interesting is how these characters change over the course of the novel.
There are some sexual situations and a little vulgar language. It was all appropriate to what was happening in the storyline and should not be a reason for not reading. Now, this setting is in England, so some words were not familiar to me. All but one was found in the dictionary in my Kindle so my reading was not really interrupted.
This is not a novel in a series, so there is not any worry about what has happened in previous novels.
As I mentioned above, I really liked the telling of the story from the perspectives of three of the characters. While I did anticipate some of the twists and turns, there were some that I did not. While this kept my interest, it did not compel my desire to continue reading late into the night. This is my criteria for the highest rating. I did enjoy this novel and would read other book from this author. I give this novel a four star rating and do recommend it.
Dark, shocking, and utterly compelling.
good book, well worth the time to read
I love this genre of books and enjoyed reading this one,
The very definition of a page-turner. Unreliable narrators mean you never quite know where you stand until it all builds to a richly satisfying climax. A fantastic psychological thriller.
Rating: Mature Audiences
Adult themes
Some strong language including a few F-bombs.
Sexual situations – not detailed yet not appropriate for younger audiences.
Some violence necessary to the plot
Emma, the main character was groomed as a lonely young girl by her art teacher, Luke. When he showed up at her home years later, in an act of self defense, she killed him. Now her husband wants to sell the house, but Luke is still there. What if the new owners want to plant a garden?
So starts Emma’s rollercoaster ride of psychological self-torture. If she explained to her husband – or anyone – would they understand? Would she be tried for murder? What would become of her son? Is Luke haunting her?
Well done thriller.
Good characters, richly drawn with some more sympathetic that others . Many twists and turns that do hold the reader’s interest. The ending is probably as satisfying as it could be.
Very well written! Kept you wondering the whole book!
I likes this book s o much, and reading everything I can find that she has written. She has a free kindle list of all her series, that I downloaded, and going from the very top down. This book is not in a series, so try it out and you will love it too.
A real page turner. Read it in one sleepless night!
Many twists and turns in this storyline.
