New to me author but she drew my attention because of the suspense in with this. Now I also have to find time to squeeze in the first two of this also. Could relate also familiar with Georgia lol. We follow Pecca whom will have danger knocking. Thank goodness for Colton whom though he helps also opens a keg of more danger. As we go along in this one we devour the mystery and suspense along with the romance. The story keeps you engaged with you not wanting to miss a clue. There is also a bit of humor sprinkled in this that evens it out. Really enjoyed this one.
This is the 3rd and final book in this series, the first books by this author. The first book was a great debut novel, heading up a great debut trilogy.
Silent Shadows is a book I have been eagerly looking forward to, after reading the other two books in the series. The book is set in the same town as the others, and has a lot of the same characters as the other two. One new addition is Colton Crawford, a very likable and flawed character.
Not only was the who kept a mystery throughout the book, but also the why. When those are revealed, it was a big surprise as to the identity of the bad guy, but also what he wanted. I did not see that coming at all. Kudos to the author.
There was a lot of the suspense I like in books, accompanied by the expected romance. I loved the setting of the Home for Heroes, and the idea of it, along with the colorful characters that resided there.
In addition to the suspense and romance, Silent Shadows is also very inspiring and encouraging. There is seven year old Maceo, with a prosthetic leg who manages to overcome that handicap. As much as I hate football, there was am moment where I found my eyes watering. No spoilers 🙂
And the big takeaway of the book was Colton’s experience. Slight spoiler: because of his disorder, he ended up in a town meeting people he would never have met (think romance…), and came up with a plan for his life that he never would have if it were not for his disorder. This is a review, so I won’t go into what all I got out of that……but it was a great message to put in a suspense novel.
I loved the ending, and the author tied up the whole series quite satisfactory. She has proven in this trilogy that she has earned a place among the other great suspense authors who are at the top of the market. I am looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.
I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions in this review are my own
After putting my copy of Silent Shadows in my closet, eh, I mean library, I told my mom I was off to write my most disappointing review of Natalie Walters’ newest release.
Let me step back a minute… before this I was walking by Mom on the way up the stairs I yelled triumphantly, “I was right! It’s Natalie’s best book.” I hurried upstairs and *groans* tossed my bag on my bed, so no, my book isn’t in the proper place it should be but I’ll fix that … After I finish my review.
You see it is the best of the series and yet it is disappointing since I can’t read another of her books FOREVER. Like so long. And I want to cry because her books are SO GOOD AND SO REAL.
All right, all right, on to my real review.
This book has been on my to be read list since the day I read the first book in the series, Living Lies, that was even before I knew what Silent Shadows was about, or even knew the title of the then unknown book. It’s funny really, I nearly didn’t request the first book for review because I thought the cover looked haunting, and the author was a new author, her debut book was about to release, Living Lies, which ended up to be a top five favorite in 2019, but back to the subject at hand … Silent Shadows!
I loved the different name that the heroine had, Pecca. It is definitely not one you hear every day! And I saw the author’s reason for using it and I liked it even more. (Ask Natalie Walters about it on Facebook/Goodreads/social media etc. because I would butcher it. ;))
Before I get to Colton I want to talk about the veteran side of the story, which was so awesome, I knew that Silent Shadows would have some military/Vet themes in it but, oh, goodness, it was even better than I expected. The men in the book were hilarious, and I loved the jabs they gave each other about being in different branches of the military. (I’M ALL FOR AIR FORCE OF COURSE…), and the love that Pecca had for the wounded warriors she cared for made her character so real.
Then there were the cute little boys who are quite daring at times (they remind me of my middle brother, honestly.) and Maceo, I absolutely loved his story. #saynomoreforspoilers
Now, Colton, after loving both of Mrs. Walters’ first two heroes, Charlie, and Ryan I wasn’t sure if I’d like Colton as much as I did them but now? After reading all three books I have to say they are tied, I can’t pick a favorite!
The suspense, oooh, I can nearly always predict what happens in a suspense. It’s not so with the Harboured Secrets series! I got until the last quarter of the book and I had a guess as to why the bad guys were after Pecca (I was right, but I was also unable to figure out why.) and I am so happy that each of Natalie Walters’ books were truly suspenseful! I was am so happy that I found a suspense that was suspenseful.
I still haven’t gotten to say anything about Colton, have I? Well, he was not quite what I was expecting, I’ve read many books with soldiers suffering from PTSD and yet they don’t always feel real or they are cliche stories, it’s not so in Silent Shadows. I understand some of PTSD (my dad’s had PTSD half of my eighteen years.) and it’s tiring to see it done over the top, or badly which was one of the reasons I’m glad that Colton didn’t have PTSD.
And I loved, loved, loved, loved Colton and Maceo’s relationship; it was so well written! (Go grab a copy and come back and we can talk about it!)
I loved the rubbing Colton got for “Hot Tamale” and all of that part of the book. The guys were all developed even though they were side characters, as I’ve seen in each of the Harboured Secrets books Natalie Walters is good at writing all of her characters, and giving them character, all of them. Even the character that only shows up in a book once, they still seem like real people in the book.
Now, let’s talk about that ending, shall we?
It was good, so good. But it was not where I wanted it to end. I wanted to know more about a certain character that came into the story, I need them to have a story! The unexpected person to come into the book was making me need more!
I would love to see that character’s backstory, it would make me so happy if it happens.
All right, I’ve said all this, but I should warn you that this is not a book for the faint of heart. It deals with a lot of tough stuff. Like …
Drugs.
Unmarried pregnancy.
PTSD.
Soldiers who were wounded.
Prison.
Murder.
Crimes.
Beatings.
Being held at gunpoint.
A sniper tries to take someone out.
Threats of killing a kid.
Threats of taking someone out just like the person had killed someone else.
So, lots of things that make this book a read for mature readers and those that like suspense that has hard topics in it.
I can’t believe I got to this point in my review without mentioning the cover! You know how I just mentioned (up there somewhere…) that I almost didn’t read Living Lies because the cover looked haunting? Well, that would have been a BIG MISTAKE (*chuckles* Read the book, you’ll want to read about the “mistakes” and apologies.), I now love the covers since they have the three main colors I love. And they are so pretty in a serious, almost scary way.
While I loved the Harboured Secrets series I am slightly sad that it has ended but look forward to what Natalie Walters publishes next, she is a favorite suspense author as of the first chapter of her first book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Pecca is hiding from her past. She was involved with a gang member when she was a teenager. The result was her son. She would do anything to protect him. Now it seems her past is catching up to her. Someone is trying to kill her. She thinks it is because her ex boyfriend is up for parole. Pecca works at Hope for Hero’s as a nurse. There she meets Colton, a former special ops officer. He is trying to learn to live his undiagnosed problem that leaves him with a shaking hand that leads to excruciating and debilitating pain.
I enjoyed this book. It was fast paced with a great mystery. It also highlighted the problem soldiers face when they have disabilities. This is the third book in the series. It is not necessary to read the first two books to follow this one. The characters from the first two are mentioned in this book. The first two books were good so I recommend you read all three if you enjoy a good mystery.
I was given this book by Revell Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
I have enjoyed every book in the Harbored Secrets series. It is so hard to see the series come to an end. Silent Shadows could stand alone but because some of the characters are in all three novels, it would be much better if you read the whole series. I especially enjoyed seeing those characters make a repeat appearance in this book too.
Silent Shadows has a storyline and suspense that kept me turning the pages quickly until I was done. I didn’t figure out the ending either, which made it all the better. If anything, I do wish it had a little more of a faith element but it is a good, clean novel. I liked the main characters, Pecca, Colton, and Maceo from the beginning. Pecca and Colton both have a few real-life problems and are working to handle them. I liked the little bits of humor that added to the story and the humorous situations in a couple of places in the story. Except for those few murders (ha, ha), Walton, Georgia feels like a good place to live with a lot of likeable people and a town that is like many small towns in America. I would not only recommend Silent Shadows but the whole Harbored Secrets series. A bonus if you buy the whole series is that it is a great binge read with gorgeous covers, which look so pretty together on my shelf.
I received a copy of this book from Revell publishing and the author. All opinions within this review are my own.
So a month or so ago I won the first two books in the Harbor Secrets series by Natalie Walters. I had never read any of her books before, but some of my favorite authors recommended her so I had a feeling she would be good. I was not disappointed. When I saw Silent Shadows available on NetGalley, I knew I had to request it. Pecca and Colton’s story has all the right twists and turns to keep you engaged from the first page to the last. In the midst of trying to determine who exactly is coming after Pecca, she and Colton must decide if the feelings they have for each other are strong enough to fight the leftover pain of past hurts and enduring enough to handle the tough times ahead. You don’t want to miss third novel, Silent Shadows, in the Harbor Secrets series by Natalie Walters.
This was a free copy given to review but a positive review is not required.
I really loved everything about Silent Shadows. It is the perfect mix of romance and suspense with some really lovable main and secondary characters. The humor is spot on and the writing style makes you want to keep reading. I’m really sad that this series is over!
I really liked both main characters. I felt so bad for what Colton was going through physically, and how it made him question himself. I wanted to cry for him on more than one occasion. My favorite thing about him was his drive to help people, especially Maceo! And speaking of Maceo, one of my favorite things in this story is the relationship between him and Colton. I loved that kid. Pecca was perfect for Colton. Her sense of humor totally won me over. Finally, the suspense was so well done. It started out slowly and ramped up to a heart pounding climax at the end.
With each story, Natalie Walters just keeps getting better! I hated to see this series end. So looking forward to whatever Ms. Walters brings us next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Natalie Walters brings the inner turmoil of a retired Army soldier to life in her current novel, Silent Shadows. Being an Army wife for twenty-two years, I’m sure Walters has dealt with a lot of PTSD with soldiers her husband encounters. It was nice to see Walters bring Colton’s issues to life. It wasn’t the typical PTSD of having nightmares and mood changes. It was something different. Something I had never heard of before. I enjoyed how Walters allowed Pecca to use her skills to help him overcome his issues even though there is a long road ahead for both of them. The writing is excellent. Walters gives the fans of romantic suspense just what they desire. The romance is more than the suspense in the novel. I don’t think the suspense was that important to the storyline as the develop of learning to move forward from the characters’ individual pasts. Overall, Silent Shadows is enjoyable way to spend a day. I can’t wait to see what Walters comes up with next.
I received a complimentary copy of Silent Shadows by Natalie Walters from Revell Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
This is the third book in the Harbored Secrets series that takes place in Walton, Georgia. This romantic suspense series is absolutely fantastic! If you are looking for a suspenseful book, I highly recommend you read this entire series. With each book, Ms. Walters provides readers with situations that are action-packed and adrenaline rushed. This book focuses on Pecca, her son, and her patient. Colton gets involved and is trying to discover what is occurring with Pecca and her son. Pecca is afraid her past life is causing her current problems. However, Colton wants to help protect her. In this fast-paced book, readers will be transported to Walton, Georgia to discover what secrets are harbored. Readers will not be disappointed as they journey through Pecca’s ordeal. I highly recommend this book (and series) and do not believe you will be disappointed!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, this is my own opinion.
DYNAMIC!
Natalie Walters has completed her Harbored Secrets Series with a DYNAMIC finish! Each of the books is set in small town Walton, Georgia, where everyone knows your name — but no one knows your secret. Throughout this series, Walters has shared the stories of several very dark people who are desperately trying to hide their dastardly deeds from the outside world. She has balanced those characters with ordinary people who go to extraordinary lengths to do the right thing and help others regardless of the cost.
SILENT SHADOWS is the dynamic story of single mom, Pecca Gallegos & her son Maceo. Though Pecca is running from her dark secrets, the two of them have endeared themselves to the people in the small town of Walton. Pecca excels at her job as a Rehabilitation Nurse at Home for Heroes a rehabilitation facility for veterans. While most of the patients are older, a new guy comes to town running from his own dark secrets. Captain Colton Crawford is rough around the edges and everyone and everything seem to get caught in his sticker bush attitude. In spite of his gnarly attitude, the skills he used in the Army continue be razor sharp. When he senses something is out of the norm with Pecca, he doesn’t hesitate to step in and take action. It’s a good thing this ordinary man is available for extraordinary tasks! This book is guaranteed to keep you up all night turning the pages! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Revell & NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
Oh my word! What a fabulous conclusion to a stunning series!
First off, I have to say I totally claim Pecca as my fictional bestie. Okay, now that that’s settled I can continue to gush about the story. This novel hooked me from page one and held my attention until the satisfying ending. Friends, that meet-cute is hands down one of my favorites ever. It just doesn’t get better than a fierce mama and “stranger danger” (You’ll get my meaning when you read it **winks**)
And let us pause for the appreciation of the wounded hero- Colton Crawford. I mean, the broodiness coupled with a protective edge had me fanning my face.
This story had some intense scenes but it also had major LOL moments. Pecca’s dancing! The soap on the floor! The banter! The three decorated veterans. Those guys reminded me of those fun folks in the movie Return to Me. I just adored them!
I usually pride myself in being able to deduce the mystery but this one had me guessing and guessing! I loved the twists and turns. And the romance was Swoon Swoon Swoon.
So yeah, I’ll quit my excessive gushing and you can do yourself a favor and go nab this gem.
I received a copy from the author. All these opinions are my own.
Yes, yes yes!!! I say that because this series has been a thrilling ride and a wonderful collection of suspense! I really enjoyed this final installment. Natalie Walters writes a perfect blend of suspense, surprising twists, and romance. I like how she can take time to create backstories for her characters and develop their deeper personalities, which is hard to do in a story that is centered on suspense and fast paced plots. The story pulled me in from the beginning and kept my attention throughout the book. I loved the integration of spiritual themes of forgiveness and mercy. The novels can be read in order, or individually, but it is fun to read about past characters in this final book of the series. I very much enjoyed the complicated plot with a twist that I did not see coming! I really liked this book and highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The conclusion to the Harbored Secrets series definitely ends on a high note. It’s my favorite book of the three, and I liked them all. Walters does a great job of portraying a wounded warrior with the character of Colton Crawford. And the perky, lovable Pecca Gallegos is just what the doctor would order for Colton. The romance between them is tender, and the mystery/suspense is satisfying. The secondary characters add a depth that will have you laughing one moment and feeling all kinds of emotions the next. The good news for those of you who haven’t read the first two books is you can read this as a standalone. That isn’t to say, it isn’t a richer experience if you read the first two first, but you won’t feel like you’re in the middle of some story if this is the first book you read. It has an element of Christian faith interwoven, but is not overbearing.
“Allow yourself to believe that even though this isn’t how you planned your life, it doesn’t mean it’s not exactly where you need to be.”
I loved this quote of advice that was given to the main character because it sums up so much of the message in the book. Often, our lives aren’t exactly what we plan, but God has a bigger plan and it’s better!
Silent Shadows is Natalie Walters’ third and final novel in the Harbored Secrets series. I have enjoyed this series from first to last and was delighted to revisit the small town of Walton, Georgia and it’s residents this third time.
The initial meeting of the two main characters, Pecca and Colton, is genius! The secondary characters, especially the retired soldiers who reside at the Home for Heroes, are so much fun. As for the mystery, I just knew I had it figured out, but I was wrong. This is a suspense book that will keep the reader turning those pages!
While this novel is the third in the series, I actually think it could be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. I was not required to submit a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This was such a great way to end this series. Who does not like a man in uniform who has a good heart. This is a series I want to keep on my shelves. They all had their troubles but how they faced them with God was the best. As a Christian you are not exempt from troubles. You bring your past into the church so God is working through you to be what he created you to be. Maceo stole the show. Colton transition was real because he needed a catalyst to bring him to surrender. Pecca had to deal with a lot and she was a true heroine. She was a fighter. Colton was a great counterpart for Pecca. I recommend this book to everyone.
I receive a copy of this book from the publisher and the opinions expressed are my own.
While this author got of to a bit of a rocky start for me, I believe she is coming into her own and each book has been better than the last, with this one being my favorite for sure!
Pecca was a kind, and sometimes feisty character and the way she cared for others was beautiful to watch. I also really liked her son, Maceo. Often kids can be hard to get write in books but Walters did it exceptionally and I admired how he fought to overcome his handicap.
Colton was such a wonderfully broken hero and I loved watching him discover his new purpose after being sidelined by his movement disorder. The protective care he had over Pecca and the way he championed Maceo endeared him to me even more!
The romance was sweet and I loved watching as it slowly built into a beautiful relationship!
It was fun seeing how Charlie and Lane (from book one) had fared since their story and the guys from D-wing were a hoot for sure!
The mystery angle was very expertly woven into the story and while I did guess some of the ending there were still twists that surprised me!
All in all this was a wonderful book and a great way to end the series! I’m looking forward to what this author has in store for us next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Silent Shadows by Natalie Walters is the third book in her Harbored Secrets series. Nurse Pecca Gallegos moved to Walton, Georgia so that her son would not be influenced by the gang that his father belonged to. Working as a nurse in a home for wounded veterans she meets Army Captain Colton Crawford. When Pecca is targeted Colton becomes her protector. I loved the way all the vets joked with each other. This book was awesome, with just the right amount of humor, suspense and romance. The author was able to reach thru the pages, grab you by the collar and pull you into the story from the start to the finish! Can’t wait for more by Ms. Walters!!
I received this book from LibraryThing for my honest review.
If no for other reason, read this book for Colton, aka Captain Handsome. As I was taking notes while reading this, I noticed most of them were about his character. Yep, he’s swoony, fierce, protective, good with kids, did I mention swoony? I mean the list goes on and on. Here’s a peek at some of my notes:
-I don’t know about you, but if a guy called me a defensive end (football player), it’d be love at first sight.
-If dancing is considered physical therapy, then sign me up!
-You can take the guy out of the military, but you can’t take military out of the guy.
-Captain Handsome, yeah that sounds about right.
-One of the cutest first dates ever.
-WOW. Where is my fan? Not just for the first kiss, but for the first hug.
Yeah, they are all about Colton, but don’t worry I had other notes too. But I can’t seem to get Colton’s character out of my head, and it has nothing to do with his swoonyness. Colton had a disability – one that I’m not familiar with, but became familiar with in this story. His problem wasn’t the disability itself, but rather how he allowed his disability to limit him. He felt like he wasn’t good enough for pretty much anything because of it. However, we was quick to show others (specifically Pecca’s son) that they shouldn’t let their disability define them. They just needed to work hard to prove to others that they could do whatever it is they wanted to do. Basically, he was not good at taking his own advice, which reminds me of myself. How many times have I tried to encourage someone or give advice, while doing the exact opposite in my own life? Makes you look in the mirror a bit!!
Walters delivers a book with so much emotion, suspense, twists (yes there were a few of these near the end that had me yelling in surprise!) and an ending that has readers on their seat. In addition – she adds the POV of Juan, aka the bad guy, which only added to the depth of the story. I love it when suspense authors do this, because you get to understand the why behind their every move. Juan has a story to tell – one that I think we can all relate to. When you dig deeper into Juan’s story, he becomes more then just the bad guy. He becomes someone that you have empathy for. Someone you almost start to like. And someone you don’t want to see get hurt. Kudos Ms. Walters for the addition of this POV. It’s not too often I find myself worrying about the bad guy!
This has been a fantastic series to read. I do recommend starting with book one if this series is new to you. Not because you’d necessarily miss anything by reading this first, but just because the series is that good! This is a series I see myself coming back to again and again! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the final book in the Harbored Secrets Series and it was a very satisfying end. Natalie writes about characters that you can love and feel like you know them while you are cheering them on to their goal. This is very much a love story as well as the suspense that will keep you guessing throughout the book. Colton has a disability that makes him feel that he is not good enough for anything or anyone. He questions why God would let this happen to him. He has to learn to trust God and His direction for his life. Pecca is a mother with a seven year old son that is an amputee and has to deal with all that goes along with that, all while someone is trying to get to her and evidently wants her dead. You will love Colton and Pecca. Get this book, as a matter of fact you should get the whole series if you haven’t read the previous books. You won’t be sorry. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher with no requirement for a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was the perfect ending to this series! I’m sad to see it end! I absolutely loved this book! I laughed and I cried. I have to gush about that proposal scene and the epilogue! How can you not love it! All of the characters in this book are like old friends since we have known most of them since book one. I love how this ended for them! I highly recommend this book and this series!
