“It hasn’t been easy, but if I keep my focus on God’s goodness, it reminds me that no matter how difficult the journey, God’s plans will lead me to where I need to be – I just have to trust him.”
In the perfect ending to her Harbored Secrets series, author Natalie Walters weaves a tale of unpredictable suspense and a delightful romance that will keep readers highly invested in the storyline until the very last page. Despite the recent crime wave in the small town of Walton, Georgia, readers will wish that they could be a part of this close-knit community that protects its own and welcomes strangers as friends.
In Silent Shadows, Pecca Gallegos finds refuge in Walton, Georgia with her young son after trying to escape her past. While working as a nurse, sparks begin to fly between Pecca and her patient, Captain Colton Crawford. When Pecca suddenly finds herself in extreme danger, can Colton and Pecca discover who is after her before it is too late?
Natalie Walters continues to create wonderful heroes that her readers will fall in love with, which makes it difficult to pick a favorite hero from this series. Deputy Charlie Lynch, Deputy (now Agent) Ryan Frost, and Captain Colton Crawford…you cannot go wrong with any of these three extraordinary heroes.
Natalie Walters addresses Colton’s feelings of inadequacy and his struggle to find purpose in his life, due to his movement disorder, in a realistic and authentic manner. She shares the message of God’s faithfulness and goodness, and his never-ending grace.
Even though this is the conclusion of the Harbored Secrets trilogy, I would love to read a novella about Pecca’s sister Claudia someday. Her backstory and profession would definitely make for a wonderful romantic suspense novella.
Silent Shadows is highly recommended for fans of romantic suspense, and readers who enjoy novels by authors such as Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, Dani Pettrey, Irene Hannon, and Rachel Dylan.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
“Isn’t that the best part of grace? It doesn’t have to be earned.”
This is book three in the Harbored Secrets series, I do feel it is a stand alone book, You probably miss some history in a few sub characters but do not need to read them to understand this one. However you will miss some good reads.
I enjoyed the mystery, suspense, comedy and romance in this book. Pecca Gallegos is a nurse in a rehab center for wounded military. She finds herself running from her past. Army veteran Colton Crawford is not really wanting to be here but needs some healing. When Pecca crashed into him, neither one expect what the future will hold. Colton and Pecca have a relationship full of sparks and hardships. I loved the town and the relationships between the men in the Home for Heroes.
Loved this book! Clueless, well I guess I really can’t say clueless, to determine who the “bad guy” was, and completely surprised at the end. Natalie Walters is a master at her craft, and I’m looking forward to reading whatever she comes up with next!
Silent Shadows, the third and last of the Harbored Secrets series, is chock full of intrigue and suspense, familial secrets and romance. After escaping an especially dangerous situation, Pecca Gallegos has settled in Walton, Georgia with her precocious son. Welcomed to the small community with open arms, Pecca feels safe in Walton. With employment as a nurse at a veteran’s home, Pecca is assured of a steady income and the knowledge that her friends have her back.
Colton Crawford, an army veteran, comes to the veteran’s home with a pain movement disorder in hopes that specialized treatment will bring relief. When Pecca Gallegos is assigned to his case, electricity fills the air between them. Enchanted with her young son, Colton soon finds himself coaching the boy on football.
When threats begin to come in against Pecca and her son, Colton is on high alert. As the threats increase in intensity, erupting in gunfire aimed directly at Pecca, Colton calls in every resource from his army buddies to discover who is after Pecca and why. What he learns chills him to the bone, Pecca is in far more danger than even she realizes…and she’s not exactly who she claims to be.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and am under no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions therein are solely my own, and freely given.
There’s a whole heap more romance than suspense in this romantic suspense novel, and I ain’t mad about that!
Silent Shadows is the third and final book in the Harbored Secrets series. After reading the book, I no longer know which of the three is my favorite instead I might have to say that reading them as one continuous story would be my favorite. Though each book can be read and enjoyed separately I would recommend reading them all and in order. I find that each one is good but it is even better if you read them all and in order. So in the final book you have two new main characters. Only one of these main characters has been introduced previously, Pecca. The new main character we are introduced to is Colton. Colton is struggling like a lot of us with what happens when what you planned for is disrupted by something unexpected. He is having trouble remembering and accepting that sometimes our plans aren’t what God has for us and what God has for us is better than anything we could come up with. These struggles are effecting his relationships with the people around him. As for Pecca, she is dealing with something that she thinks has to do with her past. But what she doesn’t know is that it has do with something else completely. If you want to know more, then you’ll have to get the book and read it for yourself. You won’t regret it.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in order to give an honest review.
A must read! Why? The author once again writes a suspense filled tale that focuses on one of the characters readers meet in the first books of the Harbored Secrets series. In Silent Shadows, we get to explore the character of Pecca Gallegos who is a single mom, working as a nurse in Homes for Heroes while raising her son, Maceo. Homes for Heroes is where men and women come who need help before they return to their homes or some other residence. I loved how the author brings veterans from the various branches of the military. They have some fun teasing and outdoing each other no matter the activity. I also enjoyed how each of the various military players came with their nicknames too. They cracked me up and touched my heart at the same time.
Pecca is a nurse who is helping an Army Captain learn to overcome a disability and find meaning in life outside of military life. Pecca doesn’t have a pristine background, but a life she has been able to rebuild with the help of God and the friends she has gained in the small town. Pecca isn’t planning on romance being part of her life but when the “cap” comes in as her patient, well anything is bound to happen!
However, there is a nefarious person who is seeking to take Pecca down and out permanently! “Cap” while struggling to live with a disability, vows to protect Pecca. But he doubts his ability, and he wonders why God has allowed this to happen. There is faith, romance, action, danger and more in this book, and I hope you read not just this story but the other two books in the series titled, Living Lies and Deadly Deceit.
Satisfying conclusion to this remarkable series. I’ve enjoyed my time visiting Walton, Georgia. This small community is rich with loyal residents who look out for each other. I’d love to hang out at the Way Station Café and chat with Ms. Byrdie while enjoying her famous peach cobbler a la mode. It’s hard saying goodbye to these amazing characters.
Recommend to readers who enjoy inspirational mysteries.
I purchased a copy. I’ve expressed my honest opinion.
I loved this story. Natalie Walters has created two very strong and true-to-life characters. I especially like that the hero, Colton Crawford, is not perfect. Well, neither is Pecca, but Colton has a war injury he’s dealing with and the story shows his struggle.
Another thing I like about the story is one of the ways Colton finds to heal–that of showing a seven-year-old boy he’s not limited by his handicap, that he can do whatever he sets his mind to. Of course, Colton has to convince Pecca to let the boy try to overcome the obstacles. Mama’s want to protect their kids, sometimes when they shouldn’t.
Pecca is a physical therapist in a rehab facility in Walton, Georgia named Home for Heroes. It’s a place for acceptance and healing. Not only for the soldiers who’ve been injured but Pecca and her son, Maceo. Oh, and the secondary characters are FABULOUS!
There’s Sarge and Gunny and Buddy and Sticks, and their ages run from 70 to 90 and are just what the doctor ordered for Colton. Seeing what they’ve overcome in their lives keeps him pushing forward.
Oh, and there’s suspense, too. Pecca is on the run from gang members and thought she’d found a safe haven in Walton. But they’ve found her and someone is out to kill her. It’s up to Colton to protect her.
The Harbored Secrets series was definitely my favorite romantic suspense series of 2020 and they just kept getting better and better as I read each one. Hands down, Silent Shadows was my favorite of the three. Because of her own life experience as an Army wife, Natalie Walters knows how to capture the heart of our military heroes in her writing and Colton was a perfect example of that. I was also grateful to get to know more of Pecca and Mateo’s story in this book as well. The development of Colton and Pecca’s relationship was spot on. It felt very natural to the reader. And the suspense…totally kept me guessing until the end. Although this could be read as a standalone, do yourself a favor and read the rest of the series first if you haven’t already. You will appreciate the updates on the couples from the first two books. I also have to mention that I fell in love with the guys of the D-wing. They were a hoot!! They truly captured the rivalry and camaraderie of our veterans! I am looking forward to the first book in her new series releasing next year!
I can’t believe it’s already time for this series to come to an end. I’ve so enjoyed Natalie Walter’s writing, and can’t wait to see what she brings us next. This book is written like one of your girlfriend’s is telling you her best friend’s love story just before you meet her. It never feels forced or outlandish and has just the right amount of humor and intrigue.
Pecca is the gorgeous, unassuming heroine, and Colton is the mysterious, rough around the edges hero. Sound typical? This story is anything but. Someone is out to hurt Pecca, and Colton’s military background makes him just the right guy to help. Except his body is betraying him, and he is Pecca’s patient. Through healing and heartbreak, these two could be a match made in heaven, or it could all disastrously fall apart.
Walters has a knack for writing unique stories with an important mental element. While many authors don’t want to touch mental illness with a 10-foot pole, Natalie does it in such a natural and profound way. I really commend her for tackling hard conversations with such tact and ease.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the large part Maceo played in Pecca and Colton’s relationship. Often, children in books are glossed over or seen as an inconvenience. I love how Pecca’s love for her son drove her decisions, and how Maceo played a role in Colton’s transformation. Plus, he was such a sweet and likeable kid/character!
This was definitely my favorite book in the series. Walter’s couldn’t have had us depart Walton on a better not if she tried. Pecca and Colton are characters you hang onto for a long time to come. I hope we get to see them again!
I am so sad to see this series end but oh what a wonderful way to wrap it up! I’ve enjoyed all three books, but this one was my favorite. Natalie Walters does a fantastic job at creating wonderful characters and a great plot full of suspense that will keep you guessing to the end. It was fun catching up with some of the characters from the previous two books as well as meeting the new secondary characters. I highly recommend this book, which could actually be read as a stand alone. And I cannot wait to see what Ms. Walters brings us next!
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.**
It was okay, the suspense was just not there. I just expected more of romantic type suspense. I found this book to be more romance than any suspense. It seemed to be more about Pecca and Colton’s romantic trysts, which was fine, but I want the suspense and intrigue! Silent Shadows by Natalie Walters is the final installment of this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Pecca Gallegos is looking beyond her past mistakes and doing her very best to care for her bright and engaging but physically handicapped son, Maceo. Colton Crawford simply wants his life back after being discharged from the military due to a movement disorder in his arm. As these two collide, there are a lot more than personalities to deal with.
I enjoyed my return trip to the small fictional town of Walton, Georgia. Natalie Walters does a slow suspense build up, but in the meantime, you get to know the warm and caring community that has the joy of small town life. The author serves up a double dose of suspense towards the end — I honestly never saw those plot twists coming! I will be sad to leave Walton, but will anxiously await the author’s next novel. She is a MUST READ for me!
If you enjoyed this book, then go back and read her riveting debut, Living Lies. Deadly Deceit follows that and is a must read as well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 255, Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.
Silent Shadows gives readers a swoon-worthy romance mixed with some run-for-your life suspense. Pecca Gallegos has moved to Walton to escape her past and literally runs right into Colton Crawford, the ex-Army captain that is also her patient. But after several attempts are made on Pecca’s life, she realizes that gang members have tracked her to Walton and want her dead. Colton steps in to protect her but has his own physical and spiritual battles going on.
I loved the characters in this story. Pecca is strong and sassy. But Colton Crawford faces his struggles head-on throughout the novel and I enjoyed watching his transformation from his “victim mentality” to hero. Pecca works at the Home for Heroes where Colton is staying while in rehab. But the other men who live at Home for Heroes are a riot. Sticks, Gunny and Sarge spend their days bickering about which branch of the military is best, and they become witty sidekicks for Colton throughout the story. I also loved to see Lane and Charlie from Living Lies adding to the mix of characters.
This novel is more romance than suspense (as compared to the other novels in the series), but the chemistry between Pecca and Colton gives readers a great storyline. There is plenty of action, it’s just towards the end of the novel.
Silent Shadows is the third novel in the Harbored Secrets series. You could probably read this as a stand-alone, but I suggest reading these novels in order (Living Lies is first).
Overall: 5 stars (I loved it, couldn’t put it down)
Suspense: 4 stars (lots of action and suspense to keep me intrigued)
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own
Wow, Silent Shadows blew me away! I can’t say how much I enjoyed reading Pecca and Colton’s story! I love how Natalie always Balances Romance with Suspense and Humor. This book had me going from laughter, to being on the edge of my seat throughout every page. I loved it so much! I’m sad to se this series end but find comfort in knowing that I can always come back to Walton to visit all of my favorite characters! *cough, cough* Lane and Charlie
If it were possible, I’d give SS 100/5 stars! Natalie Walters
What a finale! I have read and loved the earlier books in the Harbored Secrets Trilogy, and this one was a perfect ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and it kept me guessing. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out who exactly was after Pecca and why. When all was revealed it made for a super interesting conclusion. Another of my favorite aspects of the story was the humor. Natalie weaves that in flawlessly. I loved meeting all the gentlemen at Home For Heroes, the older fellows were a hoot and don’t even get me started on Colton. He was quite the hero. If you love great Christian Suspense-don’t miss this set! It’s truly been fantastic and a favorite set for me.
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
This book cover was just as gorgeous as the 2 before it. This is book 3 in the Harbored Secrets series by Natalie Walters. This is Pecca and Colton’s story. Each story can be read as a stand-alone. But of course best read in order. I love this little town of Walton Georgia, where the characters are your extended family and the stories keep you intrigued. After reading this wonderful series, I’m excited to see what this author writes next.
Silent Shadows delivers a delicious mix of romance and suspense that I’ve learned to expect from Natalie Walters. I enjoyed returning to Walton, a small town in Georgia that came to life for me while reading this series, and while you can read this as a standalone and enjoy it just fine, I recommend starting from the beginning and getting to know everyone from the get-go. It’s just more fun that way.
Colton is a bit of a brooding lead, but he has his reasons. He’s been dealt a tough blow, and he feels that his life has derailed. Pecca is one of those people with a indomitable spirit, but even she has to admit that she has to depend on the help of her close friends in Walton when it comes to the safety of herself and her son. Even though the romance is lovely, the true beauty in the story is from the friendships that are more like family, and the way they take care of each other.
The plot flows smoothly, giving the reader bits of pieces of danger, and how it connects to Pecca, until things escalate quickly and tensely at the end of the story.
Natalie Walters has been one of my favorite author discoveries, and I’m so glad that there are more books to come from her!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; I was not required to post a positive review, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
Despite its pleasant, seemingly innocuous name, Walton, Georgia is not the place to plan your next getaway, especially if you are trying to escape a dangerous past. Just when you thought it was safe…Nurse Pecca Gallegos has fled to Walton to protect her son from her own poor choices in the past, putting distance between them and the danger. Or so she thinks, until a phone call from her brother upends her fragile sense of security and increasingly disturbing things begin happening. Her newest patient, honorably discharged Army veteran Colton Crawford, steps in to help, but neither is prepared for the consequences.
Romantic suspense tends to be hit or miss for me. I often find that the romance angle is overdone and overpowers the suspense, which is my favorite part. Thankfully, “Silent Shadows” provides an adequate amount of tension, and I wanted to know what would happen in each new chapter, although I did easily zero in on one of the villains right away. While this is book three in Natalie Walters’ Harbored Secrets series, I did not have any difficulty reading it as a standalone. The patients at Home for Heroes quickly captured my heart, and I appreciated that Walters chose for Colton to be affected by psychogenic movement disorder (PMD) rather than the typical PTSD in order to highlight another challenge that may impact our veterans. Pecca and Colton’s first meeting certainly packed a punch and had me laughing!
Throughout the story, however, I found Pecca’s character rather aloof, and I did not feel that I could relate to her; she often seems awkward, and her internal dialogue disrupted the narrative for me. Maceo, on the other hand, was one of my favorite characters, with his natural ability to empathize and make others feel at ease in spite of his young age. I also very much enjoyed Uncle Jack, who in my opinion had the best commentary in this story, telling Colton, “You’re a go-getter, son, but even Lazarus had to die before the Lord could do his work” and “We all die different kinds of deaths, Colt, but they all lead to one truth. Do you trust him enough to bring you back to life?” These are deep facts to ponder when our own lives seem to be going off track and we are faced with trials. We can either try to work things out on our own, or we can turn to the One who already knows the end from the beginning and has a perfect plan for our lives. As Pecca and Colton come to realize, God is sovereign and omniscient, and because nothing is a secret to Him, ultimately He alone is able to keep us safe, even from what lurks in the shadows.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This just oozed the suspense that makes you read as fast as you can because you need to know who it is! Loved this author’s writing and realistic take on danger and tension. She nails it every time while throwing that thread of romance in it. I adored the brokenness of Colton and could understand the protectiveness of Pecca. I’m so sad to leave this town and family of characters behind. Definitely a bookshelf keeper of a series. So worth the read!
