Inspector Pitt is charged with murder in this “gripping and highly satisfying” entry in the New York Times-bestselling Victorian mystery series (Publishers Weekly). At the behest of his superior, Thomas Pitt reopens a case gone cold. Three years prior, Robert York, an important member of the British Foreign Office, was murdered in his home in London’s exclusive Hanover Close. Pitt has been … Hanover Close. Pitt has been advised to handle the situation with the utmost discretion, given the compromising circumstances of the crime: a distinguished victim from a powerful family, whispered rumors of treason, and the unimpeachable reputation of the widow, whose imminent marriage to a high-level diplomat could be cause for concern.
One of Pitt’s first leads, a York family housemaid, seems innocent enough, but shortly after his interrogation, the woman is found dead. To make matters worse, Pitt is accused of the crime and thrown into prison. Now, only Charlotte and her recently widowed sister, Emily, Lady Ashworth, stand between one of Victorian England’s most adept private investigators and the gallows.
From the upstairs drawing rooms to the servants’ downstairs quarters, Charlotte and Emily play a deadly game–and it may be only a matter of time before a killer gets the best of both of them.

loved this book
I read this book so long ago, so I don’t remember specifics. I Love Anne Perry’s books and have read them all. I like historical fiction. These are set in the 19th century. This book is well into the series involving Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. As with most good series, the characters grow over time, so start with the “Cater Street …
All books in this series are above average in plot , characters and realistic period detail. This is one of the earlier ones so it has more of the development of the main characters then the later ones which rely more on the plots which become more and more intricate. I like them both ways.
This is #9 in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt Victorian Murder/Mystery series. This time Inspector Pitt has been asked to quietly re-visit a cold case that was never solved and to make sure no scandal is uncovered while he does it. However, in his search for the killer and a mysterious woman, he is accused of murdering a woman he has been trying to …
Love all the Pitt books and am now following their son, Daniel, in his books.
Good development of characters. Not a complex plot.
Perfect
Anne perry is one of my favorite authors
I’ve read many Anne Perry books and would have VERY difficult time choosing a favorite one.
I enjoy all of Anne Perry’s Inspector Pitt and Charlotte books. A wonderful peek inside of the lives of the members of “Society” in Victorian England as well and descriptions of the growing middle class and the desperately poor. Women of society at that time, though rich in comforts, food, clothing and shelter led lives of indescribable boredom …
If you like beautifully written prose that is rich with details and characters you want to go along with as they struggle to solve a complicated mystery, this is a book I recommend. Set in 1880’s London, this is the 9th book in Anne Perry’s series of mysteries about Inspector Thomas Pitt and his spirited wife Charlotte. It is the first one I’ve …
What a wonderful book! Anything by Anne Perry’s wonderful!
I always enjoy Anne Perry’s books!
Well written.
Great historical fiction
Like the whole series.
Great story.
Not my normal read but good once I got into the story.
Good book
Charlotte and Thomas Pitt return in another exciting mystery. This time the case is a cold one which Thomas has been asked to reopen.
The characters are complex, multifaceted, and almost all suspects. The plot moves rapidly from one riddle for the sleuths to another. The ending is a bit of a shocker.
