This is the latest in the Mercy Thompson series, and it was quite different from the usual books. In the first few pages, Mercy is kidnapped, beaten and taken to Europe. She is separated from Adam and the pack, too far away for the pack bonds to allow communication. Although she escapes, she spends most of the book wandering Europe alone and penniless, looking for friends and hunted by enemies, while Adam and the pack try frantically to recover her from the world’s most powerful vampire. The threat of an international scale war between vampires and werewolves is an ever-present risk, and Mercy uncovers a plot by the first ever vampire-witch. Personally, I didn’t enjoy the book quite as much as normal, I think because I missed the interaction between Mercy and our usual cast of characters, but there was tons of action and interesting plot twists, so it’s a worthy addition to the series.
This book is part of the Mercy Thompson series, which is one of my favorites. Great characters — werewolves, witches, trolls, fae folk, etc. . Love the hero. Silence Fallen is the 10th book in the series.
Keep track and heed Briggs warning when she suggests reading the headings.
The story does not flow on one timeline- it goes back and forth between Mercy and Adam -alternating between what he is facing and what she is facing though there is a time lag – I thought it worked really well and liked the format.
As for the story. I don’t think a greater love story has ever been written . .. this time our couple has to work out their problems without a lot of backup from the pack… but we meet some new characters and some glimpses of where the packs future may be headed, and as always our characters learn a little more about themselves.
Oh an there is an -Omg, there is no way I missed that!! – I am actually re-reading this book because what is revealed in the story will change some of the earlier occurrences I originally dismissed. I couldn’t believe I missed such an important factor – yeah, Briggs hid it well but still!!
Mercy has been kidnapped and taken by the Master of Milan. She escapes as a coyote and finds herself in Europe.
This really takes me back to the beginning of the series when it was just Mercy fighting by herself. Without the pack it’s a lot of luck and reliability on her own strengths. We see her fears of being alone and helpless again. But she does what she does best, survive.
This book is quite different than the rest of the series because we get dual POV throughout the whole book. It jumps between Mercy, who is trying to stay safe, and Adam, who is trying to diplomatic and rescue Mercy. There is also a small section by Matt Smith, the submissive werewolf towards the end.
I really hope we can continue getting dual POVs because it really is great to see scenes from Adam’s perspective.
This series needs to be read in order.
I love the Mercy Thompson series. I had a delightful time reading Silence Fallen that I devoured this book and probably would have finished it in one day if I didn’t have to sleep and be an Adult!
Silence Fallen takes us back to a time when Mercy was a one-women show. She still has all her allies, but all their power and might can’t help her when she’s over seas. And, so Mercy is forced to do what she does best. Survive.
Even with Mercy on her own we still get to see Hamptons point of view and few of the other characters as well. Honey, Stefan, Elizabeth, Marsilia and in addition we get to meet some new characters, like the European seethes and Vltava pack, plus a guest appearance from Matt Smith-keep an eye on him!
It was fun visiting Europe and meeting The Lord of the Night. Oh my! He’s scary! I also liked meeting a new wolf pack. We get to see that things run differently in Europe then they do in the States. I liked all the different interconnected plot threads and how they played out. I also enjoyed all the many different views, that make it all feel like the characters are working independently; however as things build to the finish line you see the bigger picture.
The last thing I’ll say about Silence Fallen is I liked how it expands upon Mercy’s Coyote lineage and her aptitude with the dead. She’s mostly ignored the Ghosts that have shown up, until now.
Silence Fallen was an impressive and magnificent read. I can’t wait to read it again, nor can I wait for the next installment.
Rated: 4 Stars
This was an amazing addition to the Mercy series! I was wondering how the author would continue to keep the series fresh and entertaining after such a long time.
The previous book to Silence Fallen was not as interesting, to me, but Silence Fallen builds on the previous book and adds to it. In Silence Fallen new characters are introduced, it is an interesting story that takes you away from the U.S. and into Prague, there is more background on old characters, remains action packed and politically charged (tensions between species and the old culture vs the new continues to be an issue, which is pleasingly realistic), and lots of Mercy coming into and accepting herself and her growing skills.
I love how all the characters and Mercy, herself, continually notes that everyone is older, stronger, and faster than her, but she continues to persevere because she has to and knows what needs to be done. And because of that she is witty, smart, and a survivor.
I don’t usually like urban fantasy novels, and I cant stand annoying and unrealistic heroines (like so many popular young adult books these days). This series is surprisingly supernaturally realistic, and has an amazing heroine who many women can relate to.
I loved it and the little twist at the end. I remain a fan of Patricia Briggs and will continue to pre-order any new book that she thinks up!
Silence Fallen
By Patricia Briggs
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this advance copy of Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs.
A fantastic 10th installment to the Mercy Thompson series!
A quick trip to the store goes ugly and leaves Mercy feeling like she’s been hit by a Mack truck. And waking up in a freezer unit…somewhere…and in the presence of muscled men in thousand dollar suits, does nothing to improve the situation. What do they want from her and why can’t she feel Adam? And how can she extricate herself from this one?
Patricia Briggs changes up her style a bit for this one in a way that adds an extra element of fun. We’re treated to great glimpses of Mercy’s snark and humor at the start of each chapter, extra layers of plotting and fun new characters with lots of potential. Great urban fantasy, 4.5 stars
Book ten in the Mercy Thompson series. It is an interesting read as you get to see other perspectives than Mercy’s in this book. It keeps you on your toes.
It lacks all that makes Mercy awesome. The chase is the only Mercy part of the book. The rest is thrown together. The pacing is rushed. The next one is better. And that seems to be a Briggs staple where there is a book totally dedicated to setting up the plot for the next one. This one is on par with Blood Bound.
I REALLY liked this one. It’s probably one of my favorites for one simple reason: Adam’s POV is in it!
A lot of urban fantasy is written in first person and I’m OK with that. But I prefer third person so you can see events from the love interest’s point of view.
This one made me believe Adam really does love Mercy.
I just love this cheeky, fun heroine with a heart of gold, who is able to instil such devotion in the people around her. Add a fantastic script, filled with freshness of thought, ideas and characters – a definite winner.
A great read
This was such a great addition to the series! I think it’s tied with Frost Burned as my favorite of them all. It was so good and so addictive AND THE THING AT THE END BLEW MY MIND. Mercy is such a powerhouse and I pity anyone who underestimates her. I also loved that this one took us back into the vampire world and took us over to Europe for a change of scenery. Just so good and loved it so much.
While going to the store for baking supplies, Mercy is kidnapped after the SUV she was driving was hit. When she comes to, Mercy realizes that she’s being held by the master vampire of Italy, Jacob Bonorato, who is said to rule all of the European vampires. Mercy manages to escape while in her coyote form but soon finds herself alone without money or clothes. She cannot access the mate bond or the pack bond being so far away so she’s truly on her own. But she finds a way and winds up in Prague where she seeks shelter with the local werewolf pack.
Meanwhile, Adam and a couple of his people along with Marsila and Stefan from the vampire seethe are on their way to meet with Bonorato. But Bonorato has more going on than just Mercy’s abduction. In addition, he underestimated Mercy and how much she is loved by many people. This is Adam’s toughest job. He has to be a diplomat and leave Bonorato alive when his Wolf really wants to kill the vampire.
I love this series and this book is no exception. Intriguing and full of action, it drew me in from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. It’s well-written with well-rounded characters whether you like them or not. I’m eager to read the next book in the series. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.
One of my favorite series
Another fun Mercy Thompson read. Thoroughly enjoyable, the story itself is interesting and engaging. Lots of great scary and laugh-out-loud moments. However, it didn’t hit five stars for me. There were a handful of issues with the writing that kept kicking me out of the story. I’ve never had that happen with Briggs’ books before, but I did with this one. Partly it was the non-linear narrative, but partly it was word choice and phrasing.
All in all, super fun. Totally worth picking up but not the best in the series.
***Content warning: There is a sex scene. Not particularly graphic, though frustratingly unnecessary. It lasts all of a couple of sentences and is easy to skip over. PG-13 level.
Patricia Briggs and Mercy Thompson always deliver a taut, and intense story, where goodness fights the eternal battle with evil, and Mercy always holds evil off for another day.
Best Mercy Thompson book in a while. It took place somewhere other than Eastern Washington, and it included both Mercy and Adam’s points of views. There was another POV character that didn’t seem particularly critical to moving the story forward, but skilled writing makes up for almost anything. Briggs creates characters I’ve come to care about. Most authors can’t pull off a long series without a whole lot of repetition and the world and characters growing stale. Definitely not the case here. I’m looking forward to the next installment in Mercy and Adam’s world. Eventually, there will be a last book, and I will miss Mercy and the gang.
