Eleven years Oakley has been silent, hiding a truth that would rip her world apart.Refusing to communicate beyond a few physical actions, Oakley remains in her own world. Cole is her only friend, he fights for her, protects her, but as they grow closer together, their relationship gets put to the test. When Oakley is forced to face someone from her past, can she hold her secret in any longer?
I liked the story. However, as a Christian woman I didn’t like the foul language and non-marital teenage sex. Also, there were some editing errors.
I saw this book for free on my books app on my Phone and just had to read it! Once I started reading I couldn’t stop!!! This book is a great coming of age story and deserves a lot more credit!
Honestly my favorite book ever. I’ve read it TONS of times and never get tired of it!
Read this once and I bet you will want to read it again and again. A very tragic story which full of suspense and keeps you wanting to read more and more. A story about love, family, support, trauma, understand your own worth and every other emotion any human has ever felt on this planet!
I had a bit of a hard time connecting to this book and the characters until about 60% through it. I have read many Preston books and love them. Just a warning, there is child sexual abuse in this book. I felt so bad for Oakley as she has been living with this pain for eleven years and has not spoken a word in the same time. She will not even write a text back to her best friend Cole. For her dad to have been a part of this horrific abuse made me so angry and heartbroken. I felt so bad watching her mom, Sarah, struggling to understand why her daughter stopped talking and Oakley feeling so much guilt and grief because she wouldn’t tell her to protect her and her brother. I loved watching her relationship with Cole develop and how tender and caring he was with her. When he found out what had happened I was a big sobbing mess – very well written. I was glad the book did not just neatly wrap up at the end as it felt more realistic. I’m very curious to see how her story plays out in Broken Silence.
I think an author who can bring out all the emotions when you re-read a book has an amazing talent. I’ve decided to re-read Natasha Preston’s Silence series because a number of years have passed since I first read the books (it was before I starting writing reviews) and I wished to remind myself just why I call this series one of my top favourites. You would think having prior knowledge of the story line would lessen how we feel when reading a book for the second, third, millionth time. But even though I could recall what happens in Silence I certainly felt every emotion like I was reading it for the very first time, and I have to give credit to Ms. Preston for writing this incredible story like she did.
My heart is broken and I’ve wiped away my tears. I started reading Silence late last night and since I woke up I have been unable to put my kindle down. I had plans this morning…. they never happened. Just one more chapter I said, and I’ve said this at the end of every chapter until the very end.
I believe every reader who meets Oakley and Cole will adore them. They have a special friendship, an amazing bond and feelings for each other that have grown over the years. Oakley has a secret that no-one should have to keep and she remains silent because of this. Cole is her best friend who just accepts Oakley for who she is, with no pressure to be the ‘normal’ person that others seem to feel she should be. I adore the connection that these young people have with each other and I know that once they have quickly worked their way into your heart, that you will feel all the emotions and want happiness for them both too.
I loved this book…currently reading second book ‘Broken Silence’ and loving it too. Thought this book was a great read. Loved the characters, especially Oakley and Cole and their relationship. The author has a way of making you feel like you are right there in the story. Amazing read, would definitely read it again. Definitely deserves five out of five stars…and would also recommend this book to others.
4,5 stars for Oakley Farrell and Cole Benson’s story
I loved this story and I feel torn and shaken. It’s a struggle between head and heart. Do I love some aspects of the story or not? Oakley’s story is tough…
Oakley’s actions are amazing written and her inner tumult caught me and made me cry.
Cole is a boyfriend like a fairytale, he was so sweet and caring. But isn’t he too good to be true?
What irks me and made me second guess some points are the contradictions. Cole can nearly read Oakley’s mind but didn’t catch there was something bad behind her silence, her brother Jasper is over the top protective but his behavior made me flinch sometimes. There are so many layers of issues in that story. The longer I think about it the more I tend to change my rating… And I did. I put half a star on top. 4,5 stars because Oakley made me… Reading Broken Silence explained some aspects that where confusing and unsatisfying…. This story deserves time to rattle your mind and let the dust die down… What’s left is amazement about a super strong Oakley and the question how much truth could I handle myself. Soooooo well told and thank you Natasha Preston for this story.
I love when a book steals me away… and does so effortlessly. This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author, and I’ve already bought book 2.
It’s not that this book was full of action, it’s how it was layered with truth and beautiful love. This story cradled me and gave me little details and perfect times. Those tiny hints hit me harder than any detail could have.
Well done! I’m excited for the next book.
