“A cracking good yarn . . . sheer storytelling power . . . James Alexander Thom is one of the finest historical novelists writing today. . . . Anyone who thinks there’s nothing left to be said about the Lewis and Clark expedition should read this book.”—John Sugden, author of Tecumseh: A Life Following the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson sends Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore … William Clark to explore the newly acquired territory. To survive, the two captains need an extraordinary hunter who will be able to provide the expedition with fresh game, and a sign-talker to communicate with the native tribes. They choose George Drouillard. It is Drouillard, an actual historical figure, who becomes our eyes and ears on this unforgettable odyssey.
A magnificent tale told with intelligence and insight, Sign-Talker is full of song and suffering, humor and pathos. James Alexander Thom has created the rarest reading experience: one that entertains us even as it shows us a new vision of our nation, our past, and ourselves.
“Excellent . . . It is at once an adventure story [and] a historical document. . . . Even though many readers know the story of Lewis and Clark, Thom’s novel will give them new insight.”—The Indianapolis Star (four-star review)

no good, didn’t like it
I love this author. I’ve read all of his books. Wish he had more. Extremely entertaining with wonderful historical information. Stay away from any books he co authored with his wife. They are snoozers.
An original view of a classic historical situation…Great description and very informative…
I love historical books and this introduced a character who was crucial to the western development of our country. We’ve all grown up learning about the Louis and Clark expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean, and much was made of
Sacajawea’s involvement in this endeavor. What was left out however, was the story of George Droullier , the …
The best of many attempts to make the voyage of discovery real in your mind. a vast improvement over From Sea To Shining Sea.
The Sign-Talker was a little too over the top for his day. He was too educated, too empathetic and out of touch with the mores of his period. I enjoyed reading his sagas the same I have enjoyed reading the superlative behaviors and quests of Superman.
You can’t go wrong with J A Thom. Great piece of historical perspective of an epic adventure.
