Murder-by-fire. A catfishing squatter. Will Maggie get her life back before the killer claims the one thing she has left to lose?Junker and former alt-country rocker Maggie Killian tucks tail back to Texas with Louise, the mutt her bull-riding ex foisted on her in Wyoming after he gave another woman his heart. Maggie runs straight to Gary Fuller—her long time best friend-with-benefits and the … friend-with-benefits and the biggest Texas country music star since George Strait—but arrives too late to save him from dying in a fire. She just wants to lick her wounds in her own bed with nothing save a bottle for comfort, but Maggie’s short term renter refuses to budge from her home. Soon her small town sanctuary is overrun with Nashville bigwigs, Gary’s trailer park family, and grief-crazed fans feeding the fires of media speculation about the bodies in her wake.
With Maggie barely functional enough to fight back and law enforcement hell bent on scapegoating her, she begins to suspect Gary’s death wasn’t an isolated incident. To save her livelihood and sanity, she’s gotta woman-up before everything and everyone she loves goes up in flames, too.

With Livewire ending on such a cliff-hanger, I couldn’t wait to start the next book in the Maggie trilogy in the “What Doesn’t Kill You” series by the same author.
Sick Puppy sees Maggie running back to Texas nursing her broken heart, but trouble and menace are waiting, and Maggie spirals into a series of events that see her life spinning completely out of control.
Plenty of plot twists, red herrings and a dangerous criminal hell-bent on destroying Maggie, whatever it takes, made for great entertaining reading.
I enjoyed catching up with (nearly) all the characters from previous books, as the relationships and connections between them all become more apparent.
Once again, Pamela delivers a well written page turner that I couldn’t put down. Highly recommended.
Story opens with main character Maggie fighting tumbleweeds and the oppressing heat on her way back to hometown Giddings, Texas. Sitting next to her is a black and white border Collie-corgi mix. The dog, Louise, adopted Maggie during her “unplanned” stay at Piney Bottom Ranch, Hank Sibley’s homestead in Wyoming. And the adventure begins in Sick Puppy, the second Maggie novel in the What Doesn’t Kill You series.
Actually, Louise would not leave Maggie’s side. she pestered Maggie relentlessly. Thus her name Fucker. Only Maggie could get away with naming a dog Fucker- Yes, on certain occasions such profanity does slip out of a pet owner’s mouth … but it does not take up residence as a permanent namesake! For Maggie, if the name fits, wear it!
Louise/Fucker’s loyalty is unmatched and impenetrable. The others in her pre-Wyoming trip life… not so much- She has no idea Louise’s loyalty will save her life and someone she loves.
These days Maggie attracts bad luck like a tiki light attracts mosquitos. Flown the Coop, her antique shop, was burglarized during her Wyoming sojourn. She has no idea this is just the first crisis…one of many.
What follows next are whirlwind plot lines set up against a Country Music Star line up- Hutchins leaves no excitement out- Maggie faces fires, possible murder charges, and she may lose her home to her renter turned squatter!
Hutchinson is a compelling storyteller- steeping her narrative with antidotal comments and unique wit. Hutchins’ talent in character development affords her the benefit of a reader vested in the characters in the story.
Readers hold dear the sensitivities Hutchins uncovers in Maggie.
Readers feel the pain as Maggie reads her “fall from stardom” in a trashy paper.
Readers hold their breath when Maggie nose dives in burning building.
Pamela Fagan Hutchins has a huge fan base for her What Doesn’t Kill You series .As with all the books, Sick Puppy can be read as a stand alone- but believe me, readers will join me in counting the days until Dead Pile (Maggie #3) is released in May 2019! Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a gold mine for the romance suspense reader.
If it weren’t for bad luck, Maggie might not have any luck. Bad luck seems to follow her from Wyoming to Texas. In Sick Puppy, sparks literally fly! Not just sparks between Maggie and Hank, but sparks from burning buildings! Maggie is at the top of everyone’s suspect list – both the police and the fire department. If Maggie didn’t start the fires, she’s sure fanning the flames! PFH keeps readers on the edge of their seats and turning the pages to learn who’s behind all the mayhem and murder.
Initially, I didn’t like Maggie in Live Wire, but she grew on me and I was rooting for her by the end. She’s more likeable in Sick Puppy, and I really wanted everything to work out for her. Lots of surprises and twists before the ending. I can’t wait for the next Maggie book!
I’m glad I don’t really like my fingernails because I chewed them off reading Sick Puppy! Pamela Fagan Hutchins really know how to develop a character and she’s introduced one in Sick Puppy that you will NOT soon forget.
This book picks up right where she left off in Live Wire, with Maggie tucking tail, headed back home to Texas and away from Hank. Again. But she soon realizes that she can’t go back to her old life because someone is making it impossible. Not just for her but for the people closest to her, too.
Go ahead and clear some time because you will not want to put Sick Puppy down!
