When Palmer Stoat notices the black pickup truck following him on the highway, he fears his precious Range Rover is about to be carjacked. But Twilly Spree, the man tailing Stoat, has vengeance, not sport-utility vehicles, on his mind. Idealistic, independently wealthy and pathologically short-tempered, Twilly has dedicated himself to saving Florida’s wilderness from runaway destruction. He … favors unambiguous political statements — such as torching Jet-Skis or blowing up banks — that leave his human targets shaken but re-educated.
After watching Stoat blithely dump a trail of fast-food litter out the window, Twilly decides to teach him a lesson. Thus, Stoat’s prized Range Rover becomes home to a horde of hungry dung beetles. Which could have been the end to it had Twilly not discovered that Stoat is one of Florida’s cockiest and most powerful political fixers, whose latest project is the “malling” of a pristine Gulf Coast island. Now the real Hiaasen-variety fun begins . . .
Dognapping eco-terrorists, bogus big-time hunters, a Republicans-only hooker, an infamous ex-governor who’s gone back to nature, thousands of singing toads and a Labrador retriever greater than the sum of his Labrador parts — these are only some of the denizens of Carl Hiaasen’s outrageously funny new novel.
Brilliantly twisted entertainment wrapped around a powerful ecological plea, Sick Puppy gleefully lives up to its title and gives us Hiaasen at his riotous and muckraking best.
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey.

This might be my favorite Hiaasen novel. The usual cast of Florida nutjobs, but Palmer Stoat is truly loathsome and the hero-of-sorts Twilly Spree is just the right kind of demented angel. Great American satire with Hiaasen at his best.
Weird and funny characters. I don’t know how Carl Hiaasen’s mind works to come up with it but I find myself thoroughly enjoying it.
Revenge has never been so fun.
One of Hiassen’s great books. Hilarious depiction of Florida’s heartland and wild ways in an exaggerated end highly entertaining way
I have yet to find a book from Carl Hiaasen that I Dodd’s not fully enjoy and I think I have read all his books. I am a huge fan.
Carl Hiaasen at his funniest. Good environmental lessons as well, but you will laugh out loud all the way through.
Loved it. Very entertaining. I know Carl Hiaasen uses real world characters he learns about as a newspaper writer but the way he writes about them is hilarious. I don’t like violence but I do like the almost cartoon-like violence in Hiaasen novels. His characters are funny and sometimes heartwarming. The bad guy developers, sugar cane growers, etc …
Want to know what happens when you throw trash out your car window? Read “Sick Puppy” and find out. Twilly Spree sees trash coming from a Range Rover while driving on a Florida highway. He follows the criminal home, then sets out to turn his world upside down. He trashes, literally, the man’s wife’s BMW while they eat out. He kidnaps their dog. He …
You can’t go wrong with a Carl Hiaasen book. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud!
Typical for this author – Hilarious characters standing up to the corruptions of society.
This book is a great pick me up after a hard nights work.
Sick Puppy is one of Florida journalist-author Carl Hiaasen’s finest novels. The plot is familiar to anyone who’s read Hiaasen or lived in Florida – greedy developers and corrupt politicians plot the destruction of the state’s remaining natural areas. Hiaasen somehow makes this funny, with colorful characters, slapstick antics, and the promise of …
Strongly recommend this author, his Serge books are very good.
