The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.” A … raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.” A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the reader into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

It’s noir psychological suspense at its finest. An isolated island, a raging hurricane, a locked room, secret codes, a mental hospital, rumors of mysterious medical experiments frame the story. It is a scary, deceptive, disorienting, complex story.
If you love psychological thrillers and unreliable narrators as much as I do, you have to read this book!
Dennis Lehane, from my perspective, had a real special here. Because the movie was already thoroughly made, and the chance to imagine our own version, was nearly a privilege, we could purchase for a decent price. No book is flawless, and no author is perfect. But this was a noteworthy, and quality, reading. I am underclass, I vote for cheap …
Loved this book, interesting twist at the
End
This book has one of the most original endings I have ever read. The whole mystery is a setup and the man they are hunting for is the investigator.
This may be my favorite Lehane book. Very noir, twisting and turning of events that always sounded just off. Flashbacks. What were they. Edgy. Confusion…why? Sorrow slowly seeping.
Read it.
This book had some twist and turns that made me wonder where sanity really was. . . excellent read.
a good story and fun read….
A story so well told that I never suspected the ending until the last pages. And then I realized, looking back over the pages I had read, how well I had been deceived. Really great
I love this book! I have reread it a few times. It was one of my first ebooks. After that I saw the movie and it is also very good.
It is a psychological mystery thriller type.
If you haven’t already seen the movie, read this book. The suspense is palpable and the plot twist is HUGE! Great writing.
My favorite book of all-time, and I’ve read many. Lehane’s Teddy Daniels will have your heart-beating and then breaking. Too bad a sequel wasn’t possible on this story. Follow all of his books, especially the books series featuring Boston detectives, Kenzie and Gennaro, loved all of those! A Drink Before the War, Gone, Baby Gone, and others.
Good reading with an O’Henry ending.
Preposterous and depressing ending ruined the book for me.
This is such an amazing, twisty thriller. I just finished, and I am going to be thinking about this for days!
Completely unpredictable.
I read about 250 books annually and I rarely give a novel 5 stars, because unless something leaves me with a WOW look on my face after reading it, the book will get 4 stars (some would get 4-1/2 if they had a 1/2 rating base).
Wow, 5 stars! To say much more would give the ending away. Loved this book so much that I also played the video game …
This is a well written, dark, eerie story. I was rocked back by the ending. The movie was praised by people who had not read the book. But even if you’ve seen the movie, I recommend the book .
great story, even after seeing the movie
Great suspense building!
