Steffanie Holmes is a new author to me so I had no idea what to expect from her reading style. I read the teaser and was immediately intrigued, but let me tell you, I was in no way prepared for what I found. “Shunned” is a dark, mysterious read. It takes place at a prestigious prep school where the elite students control everything, or so it seems. As the teaser says, this is a reverse harem, and you can feel the chemistry building, but don’t get too excited too fast. These are definitely a love/hate scenerio that has a mixture of fear thrown in. The world building is phenominal, her storyline flows without a hitch, and her characters personalities are so three dimensional they keep you on your toes. This one sucked me in from the beginning and is still lingering even though I’ve finished the book. Don’t get too comfortable though, it ends with a heart stopping cliffhanger, so if that’s not something you can deal with, then you might want to wait.
I don’t usually read “bully-romance themed” novels because well, I have a problem with bullies. This is a YA romance so I thought I would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. It starts off cloaked in mystery as to why and how Hazel got in to Derleth Academy, being that she’s an orphan. She is then quickly confronted with life at Derleth, where the Kings and Queens rule, and “gutter trash” knows their place. Hazel is assaulted, humiliated, tarred, ridiculed, and mocked. Through it all her fire burns for vengeance on her bullies, though at times there Kings seem to let their masks slip and show feelings remorse, she will not be lulled into a false sense of friendship with them. It all comes to ahead with a surprising cliffhanger that leaves you with more questions and hopes that book 2 is close behind.

This is not your typical harem romance book. The storyline is written with so many twist and turns that you can’t put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the well developed and engaging characters. This one was a treat to read starting from page one till the end.

She slowly develops feelings for the three of them. They try to protect her from the others in the school. She runs away from them into the cemetery to discover that they are dead.

Warning: this ends in the Mother Of All Cliffhangers, grrrr, but aside from that it was a terrifically engrossing book. Hazel is a spunky survivor who refuses to let life and bullies knock her down. Not surprisingly, trust and friendship are 2 of the major underlying themes. This story’s sweet kisses, evil deeds, dark conspiracies, and plot twists make it a book worth binge reading.

When I started reading this story I did not know what to think really, and I almost stopped reading a couple times, but at the same time I was so intrigued and curious about what happened next that I had to continue! I did not know that it is the start of a series though so I was a little surprised that this book ends on a cliffhanger! It is a story about darkness and bullies, but also I think redemption! There are a lot of secrets that I am sure will be answered movng forward, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens with Hazel, Quinn, Trey and Ayaz.

Shunned by Steffanie Holmes is book One in the Kings of Miskatonic Prep Series. This starts the story of Hazel and will continue into the next book.
Hazel is alone after loosing her family and now is trying to avoid a foster care since she is nearing her 18 birthday. A knock at her door brings her an offer of a well off school that she is being asked to attend which at first she thinks is a sham. But when she is taken to the school she soon learns it not what it seems. The rich kids bully her and her roommate. When her roommate can’t seem to take it anymore she disappears only to appear again a changed person. Trey, Ayaz, and Quinn work to bully her but then in the next turn try to protect her which give in to mix feelings.
This book is very dark with a occult like theme, it also a setting for a reverse harem. So this make not be for everyone and people with triggers may not wish to read this also. But it was a page turner for me with its dark theme.
Hazel is an orphan. She lost her mother and best friend in a fire. Hazel was offer to go to a prestigious academy. Hazel looked at as she only has to endure one year at this prestigious academy for rich snobs to get her diploma and move on with her life. The very first day that Hazel gets there she thinks to her self that maybe she made a mistake. Head Mistress West wasn’t very open arms with Hazel. They aren’t to have any electronics. Trey and Courtney looked at her like she was nothing but trash. Trey and Courtney didn’t give her the warm welcoming that she thought that is was going to get. Hazel didn’t want to be anyone’s charity case at Derleth Academy. Hazel soon figured out Trey, Ayaz, and Quinn were the kings of the school. Hazel couldn’t help the way she felt every time she was by one of them, her body would heat up. There is so much more I want to say about this book but I’m not going to. I couldn’t put down this book. I can’t wait to read the next book. I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the storyline and plot. I don’t even know how to explain this book other than wow. Shunned is a wild ride that you never know what is around the next corner. Mysterious private school with monarchs running the show. Cruelty at its worst and surprises that leave you gobsmacked. Will most certainly be picking up book two because with an ending like that you need to know more!

This book takes a different spin to the traditional high school bully romance. I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as fantasy, at least not so far, but as the series progresses we shall see. It definitely has some supernatural elements to it though. I really enjoyed the story line and getting to know the characters in Shunned and am certainly interested to see what will happen in the next book. Overall a great book…4 Stars
